It had been exactly 16 hours since Stefan sneaked into Elena's room and woke her up, holding her he whispered into her ear. "I have a surprise for you." Stefan had done this before, surprised his girlfriend in the early hours of the morning, the difference was, this was a much bigger, grander surprise then before. Elena said she wanted to get away for the weekend with Stefan. The boring, generic choice was to take her up to the lake house, another thing that they have done before, however, Stefan was feeling spontaneous, romantic.
He packed her bag while she took a shower and attempted to wake up. He packed enough clothes for a week, though they were suppose to return on Tuesday so that Elena only missed a few days of school. The flight took almost 14 hours and Stefan refused to tell her where they were going until they were safely on the plane. "Rome, Italy, The Eternal City." Stefan said to her, he could see the excitement on her face at his words. Finally stepping off the plane, they had arrived safely to their destination. "You told me you wanted to get away." He said to her, kissing her cheek gently.
He doesn't know why he thought about Italy, but he did and he took her here. They needed it, it was one thing to spend the night in Stefan's room, it was another thing for him to do a grand romantic gesture like this for her. After hailing a taxi for them and the brief cab ride to their hotel, Stefan wondered if Elena would be to tired to have some romance tonight as the sun had been setting. It was early morning in Italy, because of the time difference and he knew Elena must of been tired and jet lagged, he was a vampire so it didn't effect him as much as it did her.
He helped her unpack her bag, making sure his skin came in contact with hers every once in awhile as they did. Stefan looked at Elena with a soft smile. "I can't believe we are here." He said to her, he had been here before, but he had never been here with the love of his life before and it felt different, it felt better. He took her hands into his and held them gently. "There is no one in the world that I would rather see the world with then you." He told her with a smile, kissing her gently on the lips.
"Elena, if you want to rest for awhile, we can always go out and see the city later?" Stefan offered, understanding his girlfriend probably just wanted to sleep for awhile. "Of if you feel like going out for breakfast now we can, its up to you." Stefan added, he would really do whatever she chose, it didn't matter to him, as long as he was here with her, that was all that mattered to him, and he hoped that this was a suitable vacation for her, even if it was halfway around the world and even if she was gonna miss a few days of school.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She had to be the most patient person in the world or else she would have screamed at the love of her life right now. Granted once she figured out where they were going of course she'd take it all back but at the moment she was tired and crabby after only getting a couple hours of sleep. She had been woken up of course the way that she preferred, with a kiss to her forehead and a gentle smile from her favorite person. She remembered the last time he had done this and had taken her to the carnival where he fulfilled her wish of riding the Ferris wheel and kissing her at the very top so her heart would flutter like a normal high school girl.
However from the excited gleam in his eye she could tell this was not going to be that simple. The last time he had asked her to simply put on a pair of shoes and to follow him. This time he had told her to go take a shower while he packed a bag for her. Now normally this would worry her since hello, he was a guy asking to pack for his girlfriend. However she and Stefan had pretty much lived together for several months last year while she had stayed at the boarding house while hiding from Klaus. So she knew that he was well aware of what she wore on a daily basis. Also the only one she really wanted to impress was him so she figured why not let him pick out what he wanted to see her in.
Once out of the shower with a pair of jeans and a blue long sleeve sweater she quickly threw on a pair of blue flats and grabbed her back. She had just gotten her passport renewed the week before and it was still in her purse which she would find out later was a very good thing. Once in the car she quizzed Stefan about where they were going but he wouldn't budge. The airport came into view of her sleepy eyes and she quirked an eyebrow at her boyfriend and once again asked she they were going, though this time there was a little bit more excitement in her tone. He simply smiled his gorgeous smile and told her to wait and see.
They were in the air before Elena had realized that Stefan hadn't let anyone tell her where they were going. She had needed her passport which told her they we're going somewhere fairly far but she had no idea how far. It was only an hour or two before she lost the fight to stay awake and allowed her eyes to close and she rested her head against her lover's shoulder. She thought she felt a gentle kiss to her forehead but she was already asleep before she could acknowledge it.
The speaker overhead announced that they were landing in Rome and her eyes widened in awe as she took in the smug look on her boyfriends face. "Seriously!?" She asked happily before throwing her arms around him as best as she could while still begin restrained by a seat belt on a landing plane. "I love you." She told him, knowing it was nowhere enough to thank him but it was the best she could do at the moment.
The rest of the next hour passed in a blur before they were in their room unpacking. Shaking her head she grinned. "I slept on the plane and I can sleep when I'm dead! We are in Italy Stefan!" She let out a very unElenalike squeal and threw herself into his arms. "Best boyfriend award goes to you hands down." She told him before planting a kiss on his lips. "So Mr. Salvatore...where should we go first?"

He could hear the happiness in her voice when she asked if it was real, if they were seriously there. He only nodded in response to her question. Stefan only knew that he had to take her somewhere romantic, somewhere special after all that he did this past summer. Hurting Elena, scaring her, leaving her not knowing where he was, if he was still even alive and what he was doing the entire time. Stefan felt like he had a lot to make up for and it was gonna take a lot more then a few kisses to do so, it was gonna take an entire weekend long romantic getaway.
Then she told him that she loved him. And he smiled at her, knowing that she 100% meant it, that even though what happened happened she still did and will always love him, as he would always love her. "I love you too. I don't take just any girl halfway around the world." Stefan told her honestly. In fact, Elena was the first and only girl he had ever taken to a foreign place just the two of them, not counting Lexi who was the one that dragged him halfway around the world, sometimes when he didn't even feel like it, Elena was special to him, and that was a fact.
He smiled at her, most girls would be so tired but she was to excited to be tired right now. "Well, I don't plan on you dying for a very long time Elena." Stefan said to her with a smile, not if he could help it anyways. She let out a squeal he thought he would never hear come from her mouth and threw her arms around him and he laughed, letting himself enjoy the moment with his girlfriend, not worrying or feeling guilty about anything, just being here with her. He nodded, they were in Italy, and he was glad that she was excited about it and he was worried she would be to worried to enjoy it.
She then told him that he was the best boyfriend and should win an award for it. That is why Stefan was doing this for. He wanted to make up for the past few months with Elena, as he was for sure not boyfriend of the year with her during that time. He had a lot of making up to do before he would truly believe her when she said he was the best boyfriend, as he didn't feel like it all of the time. He guessed he would have to take her word on it, but here he was feeling guilty again. "Well I figured the worlds best girlfriend deserved to get away from it all for a few days." Stefan told her with a smile.
"Well, there is the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Pantheon. Whatever you want to see Elena. It doesn't matter to me, there is no one in this world I would rather see Italy with then you, Elena Gilbert." Stefan told her honestly, kissing her back. He also wanted to hit up Venice and Florence as well, but it didn't matter as long as she was there, he would go anywhere her heart desired. "What sounds the most amazing to you?" Stefan asked her pulling her close to him. "We will go there first." Stefan offered.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She could not believe that she was standing in a beautiful hotel room in Italy with Stefan right now. She had dreams about them running away and going on a trip together but to be honest she hadn’t ever thought it would happen. Not because they didn’t want to be alone together for a while but more because she knew that for the most part they never had the chance to sit back and just be with one another. There was always something going on that they had to deal with and it seemed to have been that way from the beginning.
She honestly couldn’t remember the last time that they had sat for just a day just being them…just Stefan and Elena. Even at the lake house things hadn’t panned out as they had anticipated since first of all they had fought since she had known she was going to die and second of all they had been attacked by werewolves and then Elijah later on. It had started out as a perfect weekend but it had quickly gone downhill. Maybe this was one of the reasons that Stefan had taken her out of the country? It’s not like any of their friends could just drive the hour or so to get to them…it’d take them way too long to come get them and by then they more than likely would have already moved on to another place by then. Stefan definitely had thought this through and the brunette doppelganger couldn’t have been more grateful for it.
Hearing that he didn’t take just any girl halfway around the world she grinned. She knew of course that he and Katherine hadn’t gone anywhere together but to hear it from his own mouth erased some of the doubts that she hadn’t even realized she was still carrying. Sure she knew that he and Lexi had come here before but really, Lexi sort of was the exception to all the rules. She was Lexi and no one could tell her what to do. Elena had accepted that and had actually in a strange way accepted her and Stefan’s friendship because she knew it was nothing more even though at one time it had been. She knew that the two of them would never betray themselves nor her and it was one of the many reasons she didn’t get jealous of those two nor the memories that they had shared.
She rolled her eyes playfully at his comment about her not dying but didn’t bother saying anything towards it, knowing that they could easily slip into an uneasy conversation and she didn’t want that. “I don’t know about world’s best girlfriend but if you think so then that’s all that matters. As for where we go, honestly you’ve been here before, I haven’t. You lead and I’ll follow. As long as we get something to eat on the way because I’m hungry. Plane food isn’t much plus the fact that I was half asleep when I ate it.” She told him before motioning to her outfit. “I feel sort of frumpy being in Italy and wearing the same clothes. Should I change or are we going casual today?” She asked, wanting to make sure she didn’t need to look a specific way for whatever he had in mind.
Yes, she did act a little girly every once in a while. Waiting for his answer she moved to her purse, smiling in triumph as she realized she had left her camera in there from last weekend when she and Caroline had taken pictures for one of the many committees Caroline was on. She definitely wanted pictures of she and Stefan in Italy!

Standing here with Elena felt like a dream, after everything that happened between the two he just couldn't believe it. After all he did to Elena, he thought it was over, that she would never forgive him, but she did, and she found her way back to Stefan. She never gave up on him even though Stefan almost gave up on himself. Elena was the far better person then Stefan could ever dream to be. Even though he had been to Italy before, this was different, this was epic, and it would be the single most important thing that he planned for their relationship.
Being here, secluded from everyone and everything else was exactly what Stefan and Elena needed. They need this time desperately, they needed to be a real couple for once, do romantic things, do loving things, be alone and hold each other and talk, not about what was going on in their lives, but about anything and everything that mattered to them. No distractions, no worries, just the two of them. Stefan had a lot of making up to do and it started here in Italy, and it wasn't gonna end until him and Elena were back to where they once were.
"Well, you never gave up on me even though I almost gave up on myself. You did everything you could to get me back, even if it put yourself at risk, and despite everything I did, you still love me. If that is not best girlfriend qualities then please tell me what is." Stefan said to Elena when she told him that she didn't believe she was the best girlfriend even though all evidence pointed to the contrary. Stefan was the one that felt like a rotten boyfriend and all the evidence pointed to as such. She had nothing left to prove to him on what kind of girlfriend she is, and that is the best kind.
Stefan nodded at Elena. "I will give you the best tour of Italy anyone could ever have." Stefan said with a smile when she told him that he could show her around. He then smiled again as she said she thought she should change as it didn't feel right wearing the same clothes in Italy that she wore on the plane. Elena knew exactly what Stefan's answer to this was gonna be, but he took the bait and spoke it to her anyways. "Elena, You know you look amazing in anything, if anything Italy needs to class itself up for you." Stefan told Elena honestly with a grin.
He watched as she went to her purse and he knew why she was looking through it. She wanted to find her camera which she did and Stefan approached Elena putting his arms around her. "Are you gonna take our picture or just look at the camera?" Stefan whispered into her ear biting on it playfully. After the photo was taken, Stefan grabbed Elena by the hand and led her out of the room and the hotel and down the street, finally finding a quaint little cafe for Elena to slay her hunger.
"The lady requested food, and the lady gets what she requested." Stefan said to her, pulling out her chair so she can sit down and look at the menu. Stefan smiled at her knowing damn well that the menu was completely written in Italian and knew she probably didn't know Italian very well, he knew more then enough to get by in Italy, but wasn't fluent at it, a surprise he saved for now. He waited for her to tell him she did not read Italian so that he could show off for his girlfriend.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She felt at home in Stefan's arms. It didn't matter that she was half a world away from anything or anyone that she knew. In Stefan's arms she could be in the middle of a life or death situation and she would feel safe because she knew that he would do whatever he could to protect her. Not that she needed protecting all the time because for the most part…at least in Italy she assumed…she was safe walking by herself but still, she felt at home with Stefan. She felt as if her world consisted of just them when they were with one another and she desperately needed that after the past few months.
She knew that Stefan felt like he had things to make up for but really he didn't. Yes he had done some things that she didn't like but it hadn't been his fault. He had given his life for his brother...something that she would have done in a heartbeat for her own brother. After that Klaus had complete control of him and even then he still fought it. She still remembered him calling her on her birthday...or at least she thought it was him. Her eyes met his quietly as she gazed up at him. “Can I ask you something?” She asked him and went ahead before he answered. “It was you that called on my birthday right?” She remembered her impassioned words and prayed it was actually him that had called.
Hello? Hello? Stefan? Stefan, if this is you, you’ll be okay. I love you Stefan. Hold onto that. Never let that go.
“I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t giving a heartfelt declaration to some 13 year old kid who dialed the wrong number or something.” She stated a little awkwardly, wanting him to know that she meant every word yet not wanting to drag them into a depressing conversation either.
"Not giving up on you wasn't a choice Stefan, it was something that I couldn't do even if I wanted too...which I didn't." She told him before admitting her darkest hour to him. "After homecoming Damon was livid. He couldn't understand what happened and why you had stopped him from killing Klaus. He was freaking out and I was trying to calm him down and he finally was blunt with me and told me that we weren't getting you back. I told him that we'd let you go...but I never meant it. I said it to keep him from going off the deep end but I never truly meant it. Even if Damon wouldn't have helped me or Lexi wouldn't have showed up I would have still fought for you because my heart knew even during the worst times that you were the only one it wanted…the only want that I’ll ever want.” She knew now wasn’t the best time to bring this up but her words had haunted her for months and she needed to tell him before it tore at her anymore.
Glad that he had made the conversation a little lighter she grinned. "You do know how to flatter a girl Stefan." She told him, fluttering her eye lashes at him playfully before smiling and taking the picture of them, knowing they both had cheesy smiles on their faces and not caring a bit. “You’re going to get so sick of me taking our picture by the time we leave. The pictures I have of us are some of my favorite and we need more…we need updated ones.” She told him.
She bit her lip to keep a groan from being released when he bit her ear. Her ear and her neck were sensitive spots for her and Stefan was well aware of that. She and Stefan had yet to be together in that way since he had been back and she missed him but they had to take it slow. She doubted she'd have that much will power on this trip. They were in Italy for gods sake...could it get more romantic?
Once they were at the little café she groaned looking down at the menu and seeing it in Italian. “Either promise me you have an app on your phone that has a translator or at least tell me you can order for me?” She asked with her brown eyes pleading with him.

Elena wanted to ask him a question. She wanted to know if it was him, if he was the one that called and didn't talk that night on her birthday when he was with Klaus. Stefan smiled at her, for some reason he thought Elena knew the answer already and she just wanted confirmation. He placed his hand on his neck, letting her hair cascade over his hand as he looked into her eyes. "Elena, I think you know the answer to that question." He told her, though she wanted clarification, so he knew that this answer would not do, not at all.
"It was, that conversation as one sided as it was, was the only thing that got me through a lot of stuff back then. I think I was just about to give up at that moment, but you stopped me, you saved me, Elena." Stefan told her honestly, leaning in and kissing her on the forehead like he always did in such moments and pulled her in, resting her head against his chest as he rested his chin against the top of her head. "I wanted to tell you that night that it was me, but I couldn't, I didn't want to give you false hope, as I didn't know what the next day was gonna bring." Stefan told her honestly.
"Yes it was a choice Elena." Stefan told her honestly, taking her hand in his. "Don't you see, you made the choice not to give up on me when Damon asked you to. You could of chosen to follow him and give up on me, but you didn't. You see, you chose me, not him. That is the choice Elena. And I know that you will always choose me, even if I am not the man you fell in love with, no matter what I do, you will choose me because you love me." Stefan told her, holding her hand gently looking into her eyes. He had no doubt that no matter the situation, she would choose him if she could only choose one.
"You always have a choice Elena. Your never forced to pick me, but you did. That makes you better then I can ever be." He told her with a frown. "Elena, you are all I ever want and if I couldn't have you then there is nothing else for me. Don't say that it is bad to feel that way, cause it is not. It is the greatest feeling in the world to feel that way about you." Stefan said, all he wanted to do was lighten the mood now, he didn't want to talk about such serious subjects right now and he just smiled as she took their picture.
"I doubt it Elena, any memory with you is one I will never wish to get rid of. So take as many pictures as you desire." Stefan told her honestly. Being in Italy with Elena Gilbert the love of his life was unreal, and he wanted to have as many pictures as he could get to remember it by, though he knew it was gonna be really unforgettable for them. Stefan smiled as she groaned, knowing that he was the only one that could make her do that sound. He held her close to him, he wanted her badly, but he knew they had to wait.
Even that night in their room they didn't go all the way, they made out for awhile and then just cuddled. He wanted to, but at the end of the day he knew it was best to get back to normal first before that stuff. Stefan grinned at her as she asked him if he had an app to read the menu or was he able to order from it, he just shrugged. "I guess we are just gonna have to starve." Stefan said to her holding back his chuckle the best he could. Finally the waiter came up to them and in near perfect Italian Stefan ordered meals for them that he knew she would find suitable and then grinned at her largely.
"I order you snails and worms." Stefan said teasing her hiding his smile quite well in his mind. This is exactly what they needed most, normalness. He smiled at her. "I promise it is nothing that you will want to throw up." Stefan told her, hoping she didn't take him serious when he said snails and worms.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -His soft words were more compassionate than she could even begin to describe as his sad eyes looked at hers. He wasn't fooled when she asked him and tried to joke about it. She listened as he told her that he knew she knew that it was him however he seemed to understand that she needed to hear it. She didn't know why she needed so badly to have it confirmed and yet there had been something digging at her, wanting to hear that it really had been him and even though they had been so far away both physically and emotionally that she had known that it was him...that her heart had been right in knowing he was close by at least as close as he could be.
Hearing that the one sided conversation as short as it was had gotten him through just as knowing that he was alright had gotten her through filled her with a sense of relief and love. She remembered her heartfelt words and the way that she had sworn up and down to Damon that it had been him. Originally he had pretended that she had been just wishing that it had been him but she found out later that he had confronted Stefan about it. Stefan had denied calling her but then it didn't surprise her with the way he had tried to keep her safe from Klaus even when he had been with him all summer.
Feeling his lips on her forehead she allowed her eyes to fall closed as one tear slipped down her cheek. They had been through so much and she wanted to forget it all and yet at the same time she wanted to remember it all to remember how much they had battled through to be together...and they were finally together. "I knew why you didn't say anything. Well, I had more than one idea on why you didn't. I didn't know if Klaus was around you and you didn't want him hearing you talk to me. I didn't know if you had told him I was alive or if you wanted to keep it a secret. I didn't know. I also had the feeling that you didn't want to give me hope but honestly, that's all that kept me going this summer." She admitted.
"Stefan, it was never a choice between you and Damon...it was a choice between my head and my heart. My head told me to give up...it told me to deal with the pain and move on. My heart though made more sense than my head because it pleaded with me not to. It told me that you would come back to me. As for you not being the man that I fell in love with...you look the same to me." She told him softly. "Same eyes...same hair...same smile...same voice...and same heart." She told him lovingly, her eyes staring up into his. "You have saved my life more than once Stefan and I will always be grateful for that...but that's not why I fell in love with you."
Taking a deep breath she tried to think of the words to make him understand. "The day you saved me from the car, you saved my body but my soul was gone. My parents were dead, my brother was angry, my aunt was ripped out of her twenties to care for two upset teenagers. I wished I had died with my parents. Then that first day of school I met you coming out of the men's room...and something about you intrigued me where nothing had in a long time. I thought about you....I thought about you even as I was writing in my diary about how sick I was of lying about being fine. That's what I was writing that day when and I met in the cemetery. I found myself happy that you were there and I couldn't understand why."
She breathed in the air around her before continuing. "Then we got closer and I realized that I had fallen in love with you before I even really knew you. You made me feel safe, whole, loved. That night at the back to school party at the falls when you asked me about my parents and told me that I wouldn't be sad forever? I'll never forget that because you were right...and I knew in that moment that I could trust you."
"I know people have joked about me with Damon because ill admit we did get close when you were gone but there has never been a choice for me Stefan...you own my heart...and that will never change." She told him before lightening the mood with a grin as she took a random snap shot of him by himself. "I need pictures of just you too so I can drool over them when you aren't around." She told him with a wink.
Wrinkling her nose at nails and worms she stuck her tongue out at him in a childish manner. "If you wanna get anywhere near me this week Stefan you better be nice and order me food I can eat. I'm wasting away to nothing here." She told him with a motion to her thin body. It was true she had lost some weight lately and she knew it probably wasn't healthy but she knew she'd gain it back now that she was less stressed.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b]
Stefan could still fear the tears rolling down his cheeks from that night, Elena's birthday. That or they were new tears formed by this conversation, he wasn't sure and he wasn't about to wipe them away if that was the case. That night, they were tears of sadness, of fear, regret, anger, hate, passion. Today, if the tears were on his face, then they were of happiness, joy, love. He had to hear her voice that night, he just had to. He wanted to wish her a happy birthday, but he knew it wouldn't of sounded right. Happy, how could she be happy?
So he kept his mouth shut, as he didn't know what to say, all he could do was nod slightly at her words as he cried. Today, he knew exactly what to say because today he was in his right mind. "I should of said something, anything. I know that now, but I couldn't. I thought if I said something, that you would never give up on me, that you would continue to look for me and put your life in danger for me, keeping quiet meant I was trying to protect you. I didn't even know what to say that night, I just needed to hear your voice." Stefan told her honestly.
He nodded as she explained why she thought he didn't speak to her. Hope, that was what Stefan didn't want to give her, as if he gave it to her then her life would be at risk and he didn't want that. Stefan wondered what she would of wanted him to say, if anything if he could of formed the words that night. "Elena, what did you want to hear me say that night?" Stefan asked her, speaking his thoughts out loud for her, it wasn't really important to find out, but he wanted to know what she needed to hear him say, or if she needed to hear anything at all.
"Well then you still made a choice. You made the choice to follow your heart even though in your head you thought it was the wrong choice. Really, that's the toughest choice to make in the world, to follow your heart when your head says otherwise. A lot of people would not follow their heart in that case. It makes you strong, stronger then you could ever realize." Stefan told her when she explained it to him. A choice was a choice, rather she was choosing between him and Damon or rather she was choosing to ignore her thoughts and follow her heart.
She then told him bout how he saved Elena's body but her soul died, and it wasn't till she met him that her soul got revitalized. Stefan nodded. For the longest time, even with Lexi being his best friend and giving him something to live for, it was not enough. The day he turned into a vampire was the day his soul died. It wasn't till he saw Elena's face in the backseat of that car did that change. It gave him a real reason to want to live again. Something he had been lacking for almost 150 years, so it was the same with him, only he knew why.
He had to know Elena. That is why his soul became alive again, that was his purpose. Now, his purpose was to be with and protect Elena no matter the cost. "I wished I could of been strong enough to save them too Elena, but I wasn't. I have never apologized about it before, but I am sorry, I tried to save them, but they were..." Stefan told her, his voice breaking at the end, he had always felt bad about it. If he was Lexi's age, or able to tolerate human blood, he could of saved them all, but he was weak, and really he blamed himself.
He smiled and nodded as she said everything to him, about falling in love with him without even knowing him, the stuff about trusting him cause he said she wouldn't be sad forever. Stefan really felt like no words he could muster would mean as much in this moment. For Stefan it was the opposite, he had to know everything about her before he could love her, he didn't want to love her cause of who she looked like, he wanted to love her for who she was. Which is why he watched her for awhile before revealing himself to her.
"I was in love with you before I even said anything to you. You were just so loving, so caring. Even in your grief, you still cared deeply, I knew I had to know everything about you, and once I did, you were the girl of my dreams. And even though we didn't know each other at that time, I would of trusted you with my life as I know that even though you didn't know me, you would still try to save me." Stefan told her honestly. He really didn't want to talk about all of this in Italy of all places, he wanted for them to have fun and romance not a broody conversation.
Stefan smiled as she took the picture of him, she must of been reading his mind as she knew he didn't want the conversation to continue, that was not what this vacation was about. "Then you need to allow me to take some of you Miss Gilbert, as I need something to drool over as I am brooding alone in my room." Stefan said with a grin. He laughed at her response to snails and worms. "You know in some countries worms and snails are considered a delicacy." Stefan said to her with a smile, though that didn't mean she wanted to try them herself.
He nodded. "Don't worry, I ordered you normal food." Stefan told her honestly. The waiter arrived with their food, one big plate and he sat it between them on the table and removed the lid, revealing a huge pile of spaghetti and one meatball. Stefan Knew it was incredibly cliche thanks to a certain disney movie, but he couldn't help it, and the waiter must hear it a lot because the waiter rolled his eyes when Stefan ordered it. Stefan grinned at her, yes, even he had his cheesy moments.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She listened as he quietly admitted why he had not spoken to her that night. "I know that now." She told him with a soft voice that matched the mood. She knew she shouldn't have brought this conversation up but she also knew that it would haunt her until she had spoken about it and she needed to clear the air. She needed them to purge everything while they were away, because when they got back to Mystic Falls there would be new trials they had to face and until they dealt with their past it would just continue to sneak up on them like it continued to do.
"Stefan, I wasn't going to give up on you...even though you hadn't said anything. When we caught up to you in Chicago and you were so mean but yet still trying to protect me...I could have given up then. I cried the entire way home, clutching my locket...and Damon for once didn't say a damn word...he just let me cry. When we got home I just got out of the car and went upstairs and put one of your old hoodies on that I had stolen I don't even know when. I thought that night that I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to give up...and I even started writing in my diary about how it was time to let you go...and you know what I did after I wrote it?" She asked him, though there was no need for him to answer.
“I ran into the bathroom and threw up. When I was done I ripped the page out of my diary and tore it up into a hundred little pieces before flushing them down the toilet. I didn’t want to admit to myself or anyone else that I had that one moment of weakness. I remember telling Alaric a few days before that whole thing that “Look, he would never give up on me. I'm not gonna give up on him.”…and I knew in that moment that it was the truth. Even though I was exhausted and heart sick and desperate to just stop hurting…I couldn’t give up on you. Even when you didn’t have your humanity…Klaus compelled you to protect me. He could have easily compelled you to go and find him more werewolves or drain me almost completely dry…but he didn’t. He compelled you to protect me…because he knew that somewhere inside you you’d fight for me…and he gave you the one job that you couldn’t fight.”
She took another large breath, trying to continue her thoughts without making herself cry again. “I knew that he did it to be cruel too because at least if you weren’t around I could try and deal as best as I could…but you were always there which meant I couldn’t deal…all I could think of anytime I looked in your eyes was how much they used to look at me with love and now they were cold. It hurt…but I knew that if you were there inside that I could get you back…and that’s what caused me to continue to fight for us. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat if we ended up where we are now.”
“As for you needing to hear my voice…trust me when I say I understand. I kept a voicemail on my phone that you had left months ago just so I could hear yours. All it said was “Hey Elena, it’s Stefan. I’m running late, Damon was being an idiot. I’ll tell you more about it when I see you at school. Love you.” I listened to that over and over again, hence me knowing it by heart. So I know the feeling.” She muttered, telling him a deep dark secret that she hadn’t told anyone. No one knew how bad it had been when he was gone. Sure she had dealt as best as she could but it hadn’t been easy and it still to this day hurt to think of how lonely and devastated she had been when she had lost Stefan.
“You know what my birthday wish was?” She asked him in reference to his question about what she wanted to hear him say that night. “All I wanted to know was that you were safe…that was what I wanted for my birthday…to know that you were okay.” She answered. “I don’t even remember how many people I told that to but I think it was Caroline, Alaric and Damon all. They all wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday and that’s what I wanted. So when you called me, even though you didn’t say anything…it was like you were answering my birthday wish because it gave me hope that somewhere you were okay…or at least as okay as you could be being that you were stuck with Klaus.”
She reached up to caress his cheek. "Stefan, I never blamed you for not saving my parents. My mom was gone before you even got there. I remember my dad trying to get out of the car and he couldn't. My mom was already gone. And my dad...he wouldn't let you save him remember? They were my parents and I loved them...but I know that if I were in a situation with someone I loved that I would make the same choice my dad did. I would want someone else to be saved versus someone saving me.”
She was more than a little relieved when the conversation shifted. "Why do you need pictures? You can just sneak in my room and drool over me in person." She told him with a sassy smile before laughing. "Besides, you know that you can have as many pictures as you want. Speaking of which, Caroline is planning some dance...and we need pictures together in formal wear." She told him, not even bothering to ask if they were going together...it was just common knowledge as this point.
Wrinkling her nose she groaned. "Please tell me your joking." She told him before giggling at the sight in front of her. "Perfect italian meal with my perfect italian boyfriend. Also, the perfect Disney ending..." She told him before leaning over and pecking his soft lips gently. "I love you."

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b]
He hated being mean in Chicago, even though he still did the right thing and tried to protect her, he still hated it. He only did it cause he knew she didn't give up on him yet, and he figured that if she saw, first hand what he really was, then Elena would finally give up on Stefan once and for all. He wanted her, at that time anyways, to give up on him. He hated that they were talking about it, but once they got done with this they can have fun and enjoy Italy as it is meant to be enjoyed, this would weight to heavily on them if they didn't get it out in the open.
He never once said a word and just let her tell him everything, which is what she needed to do. Stefan understood that Elena needed to get it all out in the open, even though some of it wasn't that good, in fact some of it almost hurt him, that she even at one moment of weakness gave up on him. Then again, he did that to himself. He made her give up on him. The thing that he couldn't do was make her give up forever, she only gave up for a brief moment, and then got mad at herself. It didn't show weakness, it showed strength, conviction, something Stefan felt he didn't have enough of, Elena had more then enough for both of them it seemed.
He wanted to tell her that, but he listened instead, she wasn't yet done and he didn't want her to change her mind on telling him everything. Once she seemed to be done talking about the worst stuff in their relationship he nodded. "That night, where you tore up the diary page and threw up, that wasn't weakness, Elena. That was conviction. That was strength, many people would of broke, I wanted you to break back then, but you stood your ground." He told her finally. He was glad that she finally got it off her chest and hopefully she could feel like her oldself again.
"Maybe we went through all of that to get where we are now. Elena, I will go through 100 lifetimes of hell and back to be in this moment, to share this moment and many of the other moments we are gonna have here together." Stefan told her honestly. He smiled, he only vaguely remembered leaving that voicemail, and the fact she had it memorized was really adorable. He couldn't help but wonder what he was talking about Damon in it. He couldn't recall how Damon was being an idiot in that particular moment, but he was Damon, so it could be any number of reasons.
"After everything I did, the fact that your wish was for my safety speaks volumes Elena, more then I can ever put into words." Stefan told her when she admitted that to him, though part of him wished that her wish was something better then him, the part that still felt guilty and undeserving of everything. That she was too good for him. "Couldn't you wish for teddy bears and unicorns like every other girl your age?" Stefan asked her teasingly trying to lighten the mood a little bit, he felt really bad that he ruined her birthday, but now he was making it up to her in Italy.
"Yeah, but if I had been faster, stronger, maybe I could of saved your dad as well." Stefan told Elena when she said she never blamed him. He placed his hand on hers, holding her hand on his cheek, he loved it when she touched his cheek and face in general. "I don't know if I could do that, if you were in a similar situation with someone else, and I could only save one of you, I don't know if I can save the other person instead, even at your own wish. I would want to respect your wish, but it would kill me." Stefan told her honestly, hoping it never came to that.
"Cause memories are important." Stefan told her when she asked why he needed pictures of her. IT was basically an echo of something he had stated to her before, but it was still true. Even if they were bad memories, like most of the ones from the last few months, he still needed them, and didn't want to ever loose them, as the bad memories made the good memories seem all the better. He didn't think he would ever ask someone to get rid of the memories just so he could forget about them. They were to precious to them.
Stefan let out a fake groan when Elena said that Caroline needed them in formal wear. "Well, I can rock a suit like no ones business." He told her with a toothy grin. He kind of wanted to ask her to that, but he didn't, it didn't need to be said out loud, they were gonna go together, it didn't matter if it was ever spoken. "Perfect?" Stefan asked, he didn't feel perfect sometimes, but if his girlfriend thought that then he might as well accept it, as it didn't do him any harm in her thinking that way about him, in fact he should encourage it.
"Well, thank you, I try." Stefan told her with a smile. He then picked up his fork and pushed the meatball toward her side of the plate, recreating the scene. "...Now if only they had someone to sing and play the sappy love song right now..." Stefan said to her with a laugh. It would really be perfect then, but alas, no musician was in sight and no music was being played in this moment. All that mattered was that she was enjoying it, as that was what this was about, creating new wonderful memories that they could keep forever.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She buried her face into his chest, not being able to take the look of compassion upon his face any longer. For some reason she felt as if he should be angry with her. She remembered Alaric telling her that she didn't have to be the one to save her and yet her conviction that he wouldn't give up on her. Yet there were times that she wanted to. She was tired, utterly exhausted at that time and wanted nothing more than just to go to sleep and forget about all of it. Only sheer determination and love for Stefan kept her going and she knew, though she would never say it, that it wouldn’t have been long nor could she have taken much more before she gave up.
She didn’t ever want to think about giving up on Stefan but had he done much more to hurt her she wouldn’t have been able to take it. Her heart was damaged by the words he had spoken even though she had known he had no humanity left in it. It was only because of Lexi talking her down a few times that she hadn’t completely lost her mind and she was more than a little grateful for that. “Random comment but we need to buy Lexi a couple really good presents while we are here. We owe her a lot.” She told him, hoping he would understand without an explanation why she had randomly insisted on it but really, they owed her a lot…more than they probably realized.
She looked up at him finally, knowing that while he would be able to understand her even though her voice had been muffled by his chest, she still wanted to look into his gorgeous eyes when she spoke to him. "I would go through all of it too...as long as we ended up together. I told you once Stefan, and I stick by this. It's you and me, always." She told him, leaning up to press a firm kiss against his lips. The kiss was firm, yet sweet at the same time. A reaffirmation of her love for him.
She let out a soft laugh when he mentioned teddy bears and unicorns. "What eighteen year old girls do you know who are wishing for teddy bears and unicorns Stefan?" She asked him with a teasing smile. "If anything they are wishing for a new car, new clothes, or a new boyfriend. I didn't need any of that...I just needed you to be safe. I knew where everyone else was, that everyone else for the moment at least was okay...everyone but you." She whispered. She could see the guilt in his eyes and she reached up, her fingers caressing his cheek. “You didn’t ruin my birthday…Klaus did. He was the reason you weren’t there. Everyone threw me a birthday party even though I begged them not to. Klaus was the reason that Damon had to walk me in and not you. Klaus was the reason that I was worried…not you. You would have never chosen to not be with everyone if it hadn’t had been for Klaus. So no more guilt.” She whispered.
She shook her head before he could continue. "No Stefan, my dad wouldn't have wanted to be saved. He lived for my mother. They were that storybook romance that you read about in novels. He lived to make her happy and while he would have dealt for us, he would have never been whole. I'm not going to say that I don't wish my parents were still alive because I do, but at the same time I feel like something would have happened to them anyway because of everything that has gone on in Mystic Falls. Adults don't seem to last long in our town." She told him honestly, having thought it for a long time and yet never being able to express it before now.
She smiled softly, her hand reaching out to grasp his. "You've always trusted my decisions, even if you didn't agree with them. I know you'd take my decision on this too. If it came down to me and Jeremy, I'd want you to save Jeremy. The same with Caroline and Bonnie and Matt and anyone else I loved. I wouldn't be able to live with myself, knowing that I was alive while someone I loved was dead and they could have been saved. I know that...and so do you." She told him softly.
She giggled at his fake groan, knowing that he didn't mind dressing up, especially if it was to go to a dance with her. She usually dragged him with her but he rarely complained unless he thought it was putting her in danger. "Yes Mr. Salvatore you can. And of course I'll find a perfect dress and we'll look positively stunning in pictures. At least that's what Caroline is going to say when she eventually pitches the idea to us I'm sure." She told him with a giggle.
She didn't know what possessed her to say it but before she put her fork to her lips she smiled. "We'll make our own music later." She told him before taking a bite of the pasta, humming in pleasure at the different blends of spices as they hit her tongue. Spaghetti was different in Italy than it was in America but she loved it even more here. “So where are we going after this Mr. Tour Guide?” She asked with a wink.

"I really don't want to think about my best friend when I am holding my girl." Stefan told her, smiling a little to himself. He guessed she had a point. Stefan saw it differently though, but it was only cause Lexi tortured him... again. If it wasn't for that, Stefan would completely agree with Elena when Elena said that they owed her. He was kind of blinded by the torture. It was the same thing all those years ago when she tortured him then, it took him a while to forgive, and Lexi understood that, even though all she was doing was the best thing for him.
"It better be. If anyone got between us again, I will have to kick their ass, it doesn't matter if it is Damon or Klaus or Rebekah, or whomever else that wants to see us apart." Stefan told her. He really wouldn't let it happen again. The only way that they won't be together is if she breaks it off with him, that was just a fact. Stefan already tried to ruin it himself, so now it was all on Elena, as he wasn't gonna go down that road again. He wasn't gonna hurt Elena again, there was no reason for it. Even if Damon was on his death bed, Stefan would still choose Elena.
Stefan really couldn't get enough of Elena's sweet kisses and he wished her mouth could be glued to his, but it was only a small kiss which made him only want more. That was the problem, or not the problem at all with their relationship before. They had a hard time refraining themselves, they had no will power. So depending on how you look at it, it was either a problem, or what made their relationship extra special. The fact that they still weren't tired of each other after 2 or so years proved a lot. That was a lifetime in teenage years.
"Well, I'm not an 18 year old girl, so I don't know what they like." Stefan told her, cracking a grin, though he had a good feeling that what Elena said was true, cars, clothes and boyfriends. That pretty much summed it up. The truth was Stefan did know all to well what girls "his age" wanted. He guessed he just wished that they wished for something simple like Teddy bears and Unicorns, and not for their wayward vampire boyfriends to be alright. Maybe that wasn't the case for all girls, but it was for Elena, and he couldn't help but blame himself.
""I know, Elena, I can't help it. It's just who I am, to make myself feel guilty, even if it isn't entirely my fault." Stefan told Elena, he already kind of had this conversation with Caroline, but him and Elena rarely talked about how guilty he always felt about everything, not just for the stuff he did directly, but the stuff he did indirectly, like getting Caroline killed and turned into a vampire. He even felt partially guilty for that. It was just who he was. Internally guilty for being the hungriest bloody thirsty vampire. It was a vicious cycle to say the least.
Stefan nodded, maybe she had a point about her father not wanting to go on without her mother, but still, that didn't mean he didn't get upset from time to time that he couldn't save him, and maybe even her mother. Her father felt that Elena's mother was gone, but what if she wasn't, or what if Stefan could of brought her back and saved all three of them? Elena and her parents, may they rest in peace, may not blame Stefan one bit, but that didn't mean he couldn't or shouldn't blame himself. Maybe one day he would get over it.
"I'm sure you will look beautiful in anything, Elena, or even nothing at all." Stefan said to her with a smirk. Elena didn't see his flirty playful side very often, but it was coming out right now, and she should relish in it. Apparently Elena wanted to be a little playful as well, judging by her music comment. Stefan smiled at her and at the thought, for some reason he took it as something sexual, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. He wanted to say something witty, charming and flirty back, just to see if she meant it the way he thoughts she did, but he refrained.
She then asked him where he was gonna take her next and he shrugged. "I have a few ideas, Miss Elena. But your not gonna get any desert until you finish your dinner Elena." Stefan told her with a smile and a wink back, and yes, this was a sexual reference. Stefan couldn't help himself as he grabbed the fork and pushed the single meatball towards her like the Tramp did in the cartoon. He really did feel like they were a real life Lady and The Tramp right now.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She smiled and giggled, loving the words 'his girl'. She didn't know why but she loved to be called his. Most women hated to be 'owned' but with Stefan she didn't feel like that. He listened to her and respected her opinions and yet at the end of the day...she was his and he was hers. Almost as if it was meant to be. She knew it sounded hooky and most people would roll their eyes but she had always been drawn to Stefan. Even when she had first saw him she had found something different about him and she knew it was because her heart knew it’s home…and he had never disappointed her.
"Hey, your best friend happens to be a catch according to several guys I know." She told him with a laugh. "Including you since I know for a fact that you two weren't 'just friends' back in the day. Yes, Lexi told me and no I'm not mad. If it had been anyone else I would be insane with jealousy and possibly end up taking you to some sleazy tattoo parlor to get you a tattoo with my name on it across your chest or something but with Lexi it doesn’t bother me because I know that neither of you want the other anymore. At least not in a romantic way. Plus the fact that she has helped me get you back more than once and has talked me into giving you a chance in the first place…back when she first came to Mystic Falls a while ago. So it doesn’t bother me…or at least not much.” She told him with a playful smile. She loved this man and had found a very good friend in Stefan. Did it annoy her that Lexi had slept with Stefan more times than Elena had? Yes, but she’d rectify that eventually.
A smile graced her lips when Stefan threatened to kick anyone's ass that came in between them. "I'd help ya. Now granted I may not be as strong or fast but I'm pretty sure that I could at least help in some way…even if it was just distracting them with rambling. Or I could just drag Damon with me to shop for shoes or something and that would scare him away quicker than you beating him up. No man wants to shop for shoes…I remember my mom taking my dad once and he said it was like Chinese water torture.” She told him with a cheeky smile. She doubted even Stefan would be able to handle shoe shopping with her and he’d pretty much do whatever he could for her. Not that she would drag him shoe shopping because even she wasn’t that cruel but still, point made.
She giggled at his boyish grin. "Thank god you are not a teenage girl or else this would be a very weird relationship." She told him with another peck on his lips. "However I do know that boys your age don't want Hot Wheels and I'm not a teenage boy so you know, maybe you should read a magazine or something." She told him with a mock solemn look and a pat on his shoulder before she giggled again. "Just kidding, you are a great gift giver. Speaking of which, Christmas. What do you want this year?"
She felt his soft skin on the back of her fingertips as she caressed his cheek. "The fact that you feel guilt means that you have a big heart. And I know that nothing I can do or say will change that you feel guilty...but don't let it overwhelm you Stefan. We got through it...and no matter what we'll get through whatever the hell comes next...because with us...something always does come next." She told him, her eyes boring into hers. If he was anyone else she would worry about him trying to compel her, but Stefan would never do that. Even though she hadn't had vervain in days because she didn't have any more left and she no longer had her necklace, she didn't fear compulsion in his presence...all she felt was safe and loved. And she knew…just as she always had known…that she was both of those things as long as she was wrapped in Stefan’s arms.
She blushed when he spoke about her in nothing at all. "You know what I look like in ball gowns, jeans, your shirts or nothing at all...what do you prefer?" She asked him coyly, though her olive skin pinked a little with the force of her blush. It darkened even more when he spoke about getting desert. “Sounds inviting.” She told him with a wink before cutting the meatball in half and offering him half. “What’s mine is yours.” She told him softly, though with an air of something more. She loved him, and wanted to be with him forever. Though forever meant very different things to them right now and she knew that. She had been afraid when Damon had forced his blood on her before the sacrifice, not wanting to be a vampire. Yet after losing Stefan this summer and getting him back, it didn’t seem as scary. Not that she was willing to even speak about it now, but it was something she had started thinking about ever since she had gotten him back. She knew what it felt like to lose him and she didn’t ever want to feel that way again.
"I love you." She told him softly before scooping up a bit of pasta and pressing it to her mouth, chewing it softly and swallowing before taking a drink of her water. Her eyes gazing into his and had she looked she would have noticed several older couples staring at the two of them fondly.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b]
Stefan didn't want to admit it, but Lexi was a catch according to a lot of guys. "You think Lexi and Damon are really seeing each other?" Stefan asked her. Stefan's suspicions that Damon and Lexi were more then just friends when Stefan took Elena, or did Elena take Stefan to the beach a while back. Stefan guessed that it was fair that Elena knew about Stefan's past love life. He had Rebekah in the 20s, Katherine when he was still a human, and Lexi in the 60s and scattered throughout the next two decades before they decided to be just friends from then on.
Stefan felt he knew Elena's past love life as well, well he knew about Matt and he guessed she really hadn't been with anyone else, unless she was holding back on him, which he didn't think she would. Stefan must seem like a man whore to Elena with the women he has been with, and that's not even mentioning all the no name girls that he killed that he may or may not have had relations with when he was a Ripper. Just more to feel guilty about in Stefan's mind that she now knew pretty much every serious relationship he had, though him and Lexi was more of a friends with benefits thing.
"The important thing now is that you are the only girl for me Elena and I know I am the only guy for you." Stefan told her with a smile, kissing her forehead gently. IT was weird that Elena knew that he had slept with Lexi a lot more then he had slept with Elena, but he planned on fixing that here in Italy with her over the next few days. "Lexi is to much of a free spirit to settle down with someone." Stefan told Elena, Lexi insisted all they were, were what she called sex buddies. He hated that phrase, he even hated friends with benefits, it made it seem cheap. He was glad when it was all over.
"Well, don't give me ideas." Stefan said with a wink when she told him that she would take him to a sleazy tattoo parlor to get her name on his chest. "We have to make sure the guy is literate. Last thing I want is to have Alana on my chest forever." Stefan told her with a smile. Stefan even knew of a tattoo place that he got his other tattoo at, if it was still open as he got that tattoo in the 90s when Lexi took him to Italy for his birthday one year. So if the place was still open, he will take Elena there and she can pick out a tattoo to get on his chest if she wanted to.
"I am glad my girlfriend is so considerate as not to drag me shoe shopping." Stefan told her shuttering playfully at the thought of it. Stefan would try to do anything he could for Elena, but Stefan had really been tortured enough for one lifetime and didn't want to be tortured more. There were limits that even he couldn't stand. The conversation quickly turned into how she was glad that Stefan wasn't a teenage girl, or otherwise their relationship would be weird. Stefan was a male after all, so his mind couldn't help but travel to a place when Elena was with another girl.
"Seriously Elena, you have to stop giving me ideas." Stefan told her. Stefan liked having Elena all to himself, and he knew she wasn't complaining, but if she wanted to have fun with another girl for his benefit, he didn't know if he could turn that down. She asked him what he wanted for christmas. Stefan really didn't need anything, but he knew Elena wouldn't like that answer very much. So he thought about it for a few moments. "I could use a new sports car." Stefan told her playfully, knowing that she would not be able to afford a sports car for him.
He then got serious. "I really don't need anything Elena. All I need is you, so as long as your under my christmas tree with a bow on your head, then I am good." Stefan said to her keeping his voice serious. He didn't want her to take it as a joke even if it sounded like one. All he wanted was her, and that was the truth. Stefan nodded at her words, he knew that it was how she truly felt, about him being guilty meant he had a big heart and how he couldn't let it overwhelm him. He knew he had to protect her from whatever was coming, but at the end of the day, it wasn't because he had to, it was because he wanted to.
Speaking of him being a great gift giver, he thought of something finally and held up a finger for her. He went over to his bag and finally found the silver box he was looking for. "I found this and I figured it was time to return it to you." Stefan said opening the box and revealing the locket he gave her when he joined the football team full of vervain. It was to protect her back then, but it was also because she looked nice in it, he wanted her to have it back. "Rebekah said it was hers, but it looks better on you and I think your the rightful owner." Stefan told her taking it out of the box and going behind her he clasped the necklace around her neck and let it go as it hung around her neck, he placed a soft kiss on her shoulder before going back in front of her.
"Honestly?" Stefan asked her when she asked him what he preferred her to wear. He could tell Elena was a little embarrassed by how pink her cheeks were and Stefan just found it to be adorable. He smiled at her, knowing she wanted an answer. "It doesn't really matter, your beautiful in anything, and you know it." Stefan told her, he knew it was basically dodging the question, but he hoped she didn't press him on the matter, and seeing that she was so embarrassed by the conversation she might not want to press him on it anymore.
Stefan laughed, yeah it was inviting and she clearly got what he meant. She then offered him half of her meatball and her tone implied something more then just sharing the meatball. They needed this badly, and if all goes smoothly the rest of the day, they will hopefully reconnect on an intimate level. He smiled at her and took his half of the meatball and ate it. Stefan heard there were vampires that couldn't taste food at all, and that sounded horrible to him. Though he didn't need it to survive and it offered him no benefits, eating human food was good to him, he enjoyed it and loved the taste of stuff and he couldn't imagine how it would be if the meatball didn't have any flavor to it.
"I love you to, Miss. Gilbert." Stefan told her with a smile, this was already the best vacation of his life, and he never wanted it to end, but sooner or later he knew they would have to return to the real world, and that was a depressing thought.
