-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse walked in the Grill and went to a table and sat down. As he did so, his eyes flickered over to the familiar entrances and exits. He then let out a soft scoff. Ever the cop. Man, I need to stop that. It's not like I'm going to get attacked right out in the open, he thought to himself. It was a pretty small town and they weren't exactly experiencing a crime-wave. But then again, he was a cop and he never stopped keeping an eye out for places a person could possibly sneak up on him. Okay, he had to stop thinking like this. He had come here to unwind a bit before going home after his shift. And he certainly couldn't do that if he was worried about people sneaking up on him. But it was a habit that was pretty much ingrained in him since he had joined the Academy. He just didn't like being out in the open a lot. Then again, he hadn't seen a whole lot of action since he had been here, so maybe he was overreacting. Yeah, he was probably overreacting, but really, could you blame him? He was in a town that was basically crawling with vampires. He had already met a few of them and though they seemed friendly enough---as much as any vampire could be---he was still smart enough to be wary of them. After all, they were vampires. And he'd be an idiot to not be careful around them. And he prided himself on not being an idiot. ----------------------- ----------------------- She wondered why she was coming here alone again. She looked like she was dressed to go to prom. She couldn’t help it, Chris had disappeared and she was lonely. She knew it was kind of pointless to dress up but she wanted something to make her smile so she put on her fancy red dress, heels and grabbed up her clutch and went out on the town…and ended up at the local diner.
Yeah, this wasn’t New York or even L.A. where you could go catch a show and feel good for dressing up. This place had a bunch of galas for the young but no one for over the age of 32. That’s when the town seemed to dry up and blow away. Yeah, you either got married here and had a baby or you left town to find your fortune anywhere but here.
She wasn’t interested in popping out babies but she knew she had a short shelf life here unless she started looking older. This was easy for her to do given that she was in that nebulous age between 20 and 40 where most folks didn’t want to guess; Ahh the joys of youth. She sighed and sat at the bar, nursing a rum and coke for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. Setting her clutch down she sat there sadly and ideally ran her finger over the rim of her glass. Her thoughts were of Chris and why he may have left without a word. He seemed more interested in vengeance than in being with her. That was what hurt, that he would throw away what he had to get revenge on the vampire that made him what he was.
Someone had turned on the jukebox to the Grill she listened quietly only half an ear cocked and listening to the song and the mournful sounds of Florence and the Machine singing "Shake it Out"
And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat 'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me Looking for heaven, found the devil in me Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me, yeah

-------------------------- -------------------------- Even though he was keeping an eye out for things, Jesse almost missed the woman coming in. However, once he saw her, he was pretty sure that it'd be hard to miss her. She was wearing a long red dress that looked like something a girl would choose for a prom other formal event. Is she expecting to go to a party later or something? he wondered. Well, he supposed that it didn't matter as long as she was comfortable. After all, he was a guy. What did he know about fashion? He then watched as she headed for the bar and ordered a drink, though he couldn't see what it was. Oooh. Looks like she's having a rough night, he thought to himself. Those always sucked. Briefly, he wondered what had happened, but cast it from his mind. It was none of his business. If she wanted to drown her sorrows, she had every right to do so. Heck, he had done so a couple of times. Granted, he ended up with a nasty hangover for his trouble, but that was just one of the drawbacks of getting good and drunk. Suddenly, a song started playing---what it was, Jesse wasn't sure---and he glanced at the woman again, wondering if she heard it from where she was. Though, since she was at the bar, he figured that she probably could. And even from where he was sitting, he could tell that she seemed a bit down. She looks like she could use a friend, he thought to himself. He then stood up and walked over to where she was sitting. "Hey, would you like some company, or are you wanting to be alone?" he asked, coming up beside her. If she wanted company, he'd be happy to join her, but if she wanted to be alone, he'd respect that and back off. At least he could say that he had offered. And of course he would offer. That wasn't even a question. He didn't like seeing people hurting and wanted to do what he could to cheer her up. Of course, he wasn't going to pry or press things if his offer was turned down. That would just be rude. And he prided himself on not being rude...most of the time. ----------------------- ----------------------- The song seemed to make her shoulders sag even more. Another reminder of how crappy her life was. She too a deep drink of her rum and coke, closing her eyes as a wave of pain washed over her. This going out thing was sucking. Sure, she’d met a few new folks like Caroline and had even bawled all over Tyler but she couldn’t keep doing that could she?
She remembered the adage of a friend in the sixties. ‘The best way to get over one man is to get under another.’ Discarding the thought almost as quickly as she heard it in her head she took another swig of her drink and then had the bartender pass her another. She had grown up in a time when booze was the only thing you could drink. She wasn’t even drunk yet. Blankly she took another sip of the Island alcohol and sighed. The sooner she accepted that Chris was gone and she moved on the better she would feel but it hurt to let go of something you had just started to realize was there.
She glanced over at the gentleman who had sided up to her, a cop. She pulled out her license, “I’m legal don’t worry officer. I’ll call a cab.” She said with a sigh then listened to his words, “It’s a free bar stool. Can’t say I’m much of a conversationalist but then my month has kind of sucked.”
Chris had been a cop. He probably knew this guy, just great, another reminder that she couldn’t get away from Chris. Her night was just blowing chunks. She didn’t dare name names if he asked. Too likely he’d recognize the last name. She’d just give the first if he asked. Chris was as common as dirt in a small town like this. Long as she didn’t say he’d been a cop or anything really she’d be good.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse waited for the woman to become aware of his presence and when she finally did, the first thing she said was that she was legal and that she would call a cab. Jesse smiled as he saw the license which indicated that she was old enough to be drinking. Okay, not quite the reaction I expected, but I'll go along with it, he thought to himself. Maybe she was used to be carded or hassled and had decided to just beat him to the punch or something. "Hey, if you need a drink, you need a drink," he said, sitting down next to her. Okay, so he wasn't usually so glib about drinking, but as he said, if you needed a drink...and this woman apparently needed one now, though he couldn't even imagine why. Not that he knew her personally or anything, but she just didn't seem like the type to drown her sorrows in alcohol. Then again, what did he know? As stated, he had never seen this woman before. "But I appreciate the confirmation of your age," he added. Not a lot of people would've been willing to put a cop's mind at ease. So yes, he was grateful that she had as it made his job a heck of a whole lot easier. His eyes then clouded in concern as she said that he could sit down, but that she wouldn't be much company as her month had sucked. "What happened?" he wondered. He then glanced at her. She sounded really down, though thankfully, she didn't sound like she had given up hope quite yet. Hopefully he wouldn't have to deal with such a serious situation, but if he had to, he would. After all, if you had the chance to help someone, you shouldn't overlook it as you never knew what the result could be. Which was part of the reason that he had chosen to join her. The other part was that he truly wanted to cheer her up. Call him a sucker or a sap, but he never liked seeing a lady unhappy. ----------------------- ----------------------- The one good thing about modern bars was the lack of cigarette smoke. Few people realized how much it bothered supernaturals and up until a few years ago people lit up everwhere regardless of who was around them. The one thing that never changed was the fact that there was bar munchies to make one thirsty in the hopes that they would buy more booze. “Yeah, sorry. Spent time with a member who used on the force. Got used to just being up front.” She said softly.
She ducked her head and stared off at nothing trying hard to not think too hard about her problems. “I met this guy. An ex cop who was going through some things. I was kind of helping him out a bit and things were going really great for a while. I actually thought he liked me…well at least he said he did and we were starting to think about dating but when I went to talk to him the next day he was gone. All his clothes packed up.”
She took another drink and grimaced, “I just feel stupid. I laid all my baggage right out for him to see it. I was honest and up front and I thought he could handle it. I mean he said he could and I believed him but then he just took off.” Ok now she was depressed as all get out. “My name is Marina.” She offered quietly. Something told her that this guy wasn’t just feeding her a line. Still, it was nice that he cared.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse's eyes flickered somewhat as the girl apologized and then explained that she had once hung around a member of the force and had just gotten used to being upfront. "No need to apologize. It's perfectly understandable," he said, curious as to who she was referring to. A part of him wondered if she was talking about Chris, but he pushed the thought aside. There were a lot of different people who were police officers and it was more likely than not that he didn't even know the man that the woman was referring to. But it didn't mean that he wasn't curious. However, he wasn't about to give in to that curiosity. Nothing good ever came from doing so. Besides, no one liked a busybody, and he didn't want this woman to think that he was butting into her business. She then went on, explaining that she had met a guy---an ex cop---who was going through some things and was trying to help him. "I see," he said and focused his attention on her as she went on to say that as she was helping him, they had started hanging out and that he had said that he had liked her, and when she had gone to see him the next day, he was gone, taking his clothes with him. That doesn't sound good, he thought to himself. If the guy had been a cop---and Jesse couldn't say for sure whether or not the guy actually was---a disappearance like that could mean that he had been undercover and had to move when his cover had been blown or the case had ended or that he had been killed and the guys who had offed him were just covering their tracks. Or it could be that he was a dick who had lied about who he was and what he did for a living and had moved on when things didn't seem to be going his way. None of these options were appealing, but the officer was smart enough not to voice these theories to his companion. He watched as she took another drink before saying that she felt stupid as she had laid her heart on the line and had told the guy everything before he had just taken off. "Sounds like he's a jerk who doesn't know what he's missing," he said sympathetically. Okay, maybe he was being harsh towards someone he didn't even know, but if his callousness had driven this woman to drown her sorrows in alcohol, he didn't really care if he sounded harsh. Some women were more sensitive to others and even if they weren't all that sensitive, they didn't deserve to get played. When she gave him her name, his eyes widened slightly. Marina? Hadn't Chris mentioned a Marina? This can't be good, he thought to himself. If Chris was missing, there were two other possibilities: he had freaked out and had fled Mystic Falls or his status as a vampire had been discovered and he had been staked, and his stuff taken to cover the tracks of whoever had killed him. All right, Jesse. Just calm down, you don't know anything for sure, he reminded himself. "I'm Jesse," he told her. ----------------------- ----------------------- A dull nod meets Jesse quietly as she looks at him, “Thank you for your kindness. I am still trying to get used to the change in fortune as much as anything else. Her eyes go dark as she thought about Chris’ abandonment. She shakes her head as if to clear it. “There are worse fates.” She said softly with a quiet movement of her shoulders.
She laughed ironically, “He said the same thing. Chris made me feel like I was important and then he lied to me.” She said softly, letting it show in her eyes before she closed them. Her heart ached with the memories that she had. She really did not know what to think of everything. She wished she could forget it all. It hurt her.
“It’s good to meet you, Jesse.” She said softly, “I wish that the situation was better. I know my plight is minor in comparison to others.” Her words spoke of a time past as she collected her thoughts to address him. It took her a bit to remind herself to look at him. Careful to remind herself to look at him and act like a human. It could be so hard when she was distracted and sad. She sipped her drink slowly, letting it burn down her throat as she exhaled slowly and pinched her nose as she felt her head starting to throb as she spoke to him softly. Her drinking had given her a headache. She knew she needed to stop drinking so much. It was causing her some dehydration but it was cutting her urges.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse gave her a small smile as she thanked him for his kindness, explaining that she was just trying to get used to the change in her situation more than anything else. "Yeah, I'm sure it was quite a shock to find him gone like that," he murmured. And yes, he was speaking the truth. He knew that if he was trying to help someone out and he found them gone without a trace, he'd be pretty upset too. So yeah, he could imagine a little bit of what Marina was feeling. He watched as she shook her head as if trying to clear it and stated that there were worse fates. "That may be true, but still, no one should be made to feel like a fool," he said. And this was something he truly believed. It wasn't a good feeling and no one should have to go through it. His eyes clouded even more as she told him that her friend had said the same thing and had made her feel like she was important and then he had lied to her. "I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that," he murmured. And she hadn't. But if she was talking about the Chris he knew---which he highly doubted as Chris was one of the most common names around---he knew that this kind of behavior wasn't normal, and to just take off didn't make sense. Then again, as stated before, it probably wasn't the same guy he knew. And why would it be? It just didn't make sense. And yet, you never knew... He smiled at her as she said that it was nice to meet him, saying that she wished the situation was better as she knew that what she was going through was minor to compared to what other people went through. "It doesn't sound so minor to me," he told her. "So, what does this guy look like so that I can kick his ass if I ever run across him?" he wondered. Hey, it was a way to get information at least. ----------------------- ----------------------- She could tell Jesse was sympathetic to her situation but she hated that she was in it in the first place. She just shouldn’t be. It wasn’t cool and she hated leaning on others when she couldn’t even really tell them what she was. It sucked plain and simple. She truly hated being this dependant, “I’m used to being abandoned. I should have expected it, nothing goes right for me.”
She sighed and looked at the top of the bar, “He’s got brown hair in a military cut and blue eyes. His ears kind of stick out a little but he’s got very nice features and a nice smile. Always carries his firearm with him he got from the force.” She said simply as she looked at nothing in particular. “No point in beating him up. Some folks are just jerks. Story of my life.” She muttered as she looked at him and sighed.
It was really nice of him to offer and she felt touched by it. “I wish I met a nice guy like you. You seem very sweet.” She said sadly as she tried to get up the energy to leave the bar and go cry herself to sleep, “Nice to know there are some good folks in this town if nothing else.” She said simply as she looked up at him and smiled, her brown eyes sincere as she regarded him quietly. She finished her drink and passed the bartender the money she owed. “I’m going to walk home now. Its safer that way.” She murmured softly as she went to push away from the bar. She was still good on her feet. She could make it home easy.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse's eyes clouded a bit as the woman said that she was used to being abandoned and that she should've expected it as nothing ever went right for her. "I'm sure it's not as bad as all that," he murmured. Surely things weren't as bad as she thought they were. But then again, Jesse always tried to look on the bright side of things so maybe that was affecting his thinking. It wasn't like he knew the situation after all. The officer frowned in concentration at the woman's description of her friend. It was pretty basic and could fit the description of any number of people, even with the the comment about him carrying his firearm. "Does he have any tattoos or scars? Anything that would make him stand out in a crowd?" he queried. After all, if he was going to be on the look out for her friend, he needed to know these things. Plus, it was natural curiousity getting the better of him. However, she didn't need to know that part. When she said that there was no need to beat him up as people were just jerks and that it was the story of her life, he reached over to place a hand on hers. "Not all guys are like that, I can assure you of that," he told her. He smiled briefly as she said that she wished that she could meet a nice guy like him as he seemed sweet and it was nice to know that there seemed to be some nice folks in town. "I try to be," he said. He didn't always succeed, but he did put in the effort. When she pushed herself from the bar and said that she was going to walk home as it was safer that way, Jesse stood grace. "Would you like an escort?" he asked, his instincts taking over. While she hadn't drunk a lot---at least, not in his presence---she had had a drink and in her mindset she may not pay any attention to her surroundings, which would make her the perfect target for an attack. Of course, if she turned him down, he wouldn't push things. But he really hoped that she didn't turn him down. The brunette shook her head, “Its me, I’m cursed. I suppose I deserve it. I dunno.” She said softly as she looked at him, “He looks like everyone else. His name is Chris Morris. He has blue eyes, pale skin, works out and looks like the boy next door type.”
She had to distract herself. She just had to. She hated feeling like this. She opted focus on Jesse, he was a nice guy. Sweet, well mannered. And he was offering to escort her home, “Are you sure that’s wise? I’m drunk. I’m half way to asking you on a date even though I know the answer is probably no. That’s what being drunk gets me. Stupid impulses to try and move on with total strangers.” She exhaled and grabbed her purse.
Staggering a little bit she felt the room spin. “Crap, I’m an idiot. If you want to risk being around me helping me home would be great. I think heading home is a good idea. My bed seems like a really safe place to be right now.”
Boy did it. Of course the guy offering to help her was nice. She wished she could meet a nice single guy like him. He was probably taken. This town had the highest per capita rating of paired up folks she had ever met. It was crazy. Everyone had someone whether they realized it or not. She wondered if there was a spell on the town or something to make it happen and if it would happen to her.
“You think I’ll ever find true love?” she asked as she looked deep into his eyes and sighed, “Cause its been a long time and no one has even looked my way. I’m thinking its gotta be me. My attitude or something.” She was rambling but didn’t care. She just didn’t want to be alone any more. She didn’t care any more if this cop found out his friend was a vampire. She was too drunk to give a crap.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse's eyes clouded a bit as Marina said that it was her, that she was cursed, and that she deserved it. Who the heck did a number on her? he wondered. From the way she was talking, it sounded like she had been beaten down by life and now only expected the worst to happen to her. "You don't deserve to be treated like that. Don't let that kind of thinking in," he advised. That kind of thinking led to despair and other harmful behavior, and he didn't want her going down that road. He then listened as she described her friend, saying that he was pale, had blue eyes, and was named Chris Morris. "Chris? He's not the type to just flake," he mused, a wave of concern flaring up. It didn't make sense. Chris was usually responsible when it came to his friends, so him disappearing like this didn't really make much sense. After his offer to escort her home, she responded by asking him if he thought his offer had been wise as she was drunk and she was halfway towards asking him out even though his answer would probably be no, adding that her getting drunk usually led to her being impulsive and trying to move on with total strangers. "Moving on isn't a bad thing, though it should definitely only be done when sober and you have complete control of your faculties," he commented, watching as she grabbed her purse. He had to admit, he was a bit flattered that she thought he was date-worthy, but he'd rather have that conversation when she wasn't close to three sheets to the wind. He watched as she stepped forward and then stumbled a bit, causing her to say that she was an idiot and that him helping her home would be appreciated if he wanted to risk being around her as her getting home would be a good idea and that her bed would be the safest for her at the moment. "Okay, lean on me," he said, going to wrap an arm around her. Yes, her own bed would be the best thing for her. He wasn't quite sure how long she had been drinking, though from the looks of things, it had been a while before he had shown up. Jesse hadn't realized that Marina had started speaking again until she asked him if he thought that she would ever find true love, saying that it had been a long time and then theorizing that it was her or her attitude. "Or those guys are just idiots for letting you slip out of their lives," he responded. Though he had to admit, that she could use a dose of self-confidence. If she had a better view of herself, she'd probably have better luck with guys. Then again, he had no idea what her life had been like, so it was entirely possible that he was way off base with his thinking... Her eyes welled up, “Chris said that too and just when I believed him he up and left.” She said with a trembling lower lip, “Hard to believe someone when they up and leave after they say they love you.” She said as she tried not to cry. She hated being this emotional and ready to burst into tears but she knew it was better than the alternative. Nothing was worth that.
“Well maybe its not like him to do it but he totally did. At what point is he supposed to come back?” she asked softly as she looked him in the eyes and tried not to cry. “Even if he does what is to keep him from disappearing again?” She had to get out of this funk but as long as his friend was making him sound like a great guy it wasn’t helping.
Her heart got heavy just thinking about it. She exhaled and leaned on him as he helped her out of the bar, “I don’t know.” She said miserably as they walked to his car. She was not going to drive and he was a cop. If he had been a bad guy she’d compel him to drive her home and tell him to forget her but he seemed solid, unlike Chris. This kind of thinking was getting her nowhere but it did make it hurt less and less a little bit every day. Jesse seemed like a nice guy with a good head on his shoulders.

-------------------------- -------------------------- Jesse's eyes clouded in sympathy as Marina's eyes brimmed as she said that Chris had said the same thing and had left just when she had started to believe him. Man, how could Chris do this to her? It just didn't make sense. Had being a vampire changed him that much? Or had he turned off his humanity? He remembered how different Mick had been when he had shut everything off and it sounded like his friend had just done the same thing. "I know this doesn't help, but I'm sorry," he murmured, reaching over, intending to take her hand and squeeze it if she allowed it. Even though it was a stupid thing to say, he said it. It was basically the least he could do. It wasn't like he knew where Chris was so that he could kick his ass. He fell silent as she said that even if it wasn't like him to do what he had done, it had happened and wondered at what point he was supposed to come back, and even if he did come back, wanted to know what would keep it from happening again. He really had no answer for that as she had brought up a good point. Even though she was a vampire, Chris couldn't just expect her to wait an eternity for him to come to his senses. "He sucks. Let's just leave it at that," he said, hoping his quip would would make her smile. He didn't think it would as he was horrible at making jokes, but hey, he'd get points for effort, right? As they walked to her car, she said that she didn't know about his comment about guys being idiots for letting her slip away, and he let out a sigh. Yeah, Chris was definitely going to get a stake in the chest the next time he saw him. It'd be below the heart which meant that he wouldn't die, but it'd still hurt like a bitch. Yup. Jesse was pissed at his friend. And could you really blame him? From what he was hearing, he had totally played this girl and had caused her to go out and get herself drunk. "Let me know when you see your car," he requested.
