Seeing Maria again was the best thing that has ever happened to Michael. He couldn't believe it, he thought he would never see her again. But there she was, looking as beautiful as ever and he couldn't help it. 5 years of stored romance was unleashed at once and Michael was more romantic then he had ever been before. Which wasn't saying much, granted. But that was not gonna last very long, and sooner or later Michael was doomed to screw up. It was inevitable.
After fate intervened and Michael ran into Maria on the beach, she invited him to stay with her. Michael had to accept, he loved her after all, and he didn't want to live in a motel room, he wanted to live with her, for the last 7 years, Maria was his home, the only thing he thought about, and now them living together was an actual possibility. Maybe their meeting was a trap, and someone was just waiting around every turn to take them down, if this was the case, then Michael had to make the most of the time he had with Maria count.
Living with your true love sounded like roses and daises, but sometimes, it wasn't. As with every new living arrangement, there was bound to be problems. Some little, some huge, the key was to avoid getting in the huge ones, the little ones can be solved, the big ones took much longer to work out. So the honeymoon of living together soon turned sour on both of them. Michael constantly forgot to pick up after himself, he would put his feet up on the coffee table when Maria told him not to, and worse of all was sundays, where he would plant his behind in front of the TV for 12 hours watching football.
These were all little problems cause by Michael that was doomed to cause a huge fight between the two of them. Finally the breaking point was reached and all hell broke loose. Michael, watching something on tv, his feet on the coffee table and yesterdays T-shirt discarded on the floor next to the chair that he sat on. He heard the front door open and knew that Maria was how. "Hey." Michael said to her as he didn't bother to take his eyes off the TV.

aria knew that Michael was not the best boyfriend, everyone knew that and she had made her decision based on the facts that she knew. He was not the best boyfriend but he loved her more than anyone ever had and she loved him more than she had ever loved someone. And she was okay with dealing with him being who he was because she loved every part of him. Or at least this was what she was trying to tell herself. she loved him yes but saying that she loved every part of him was something else. Maybe it was not even possible to love every part of someone.
But since they both loved each other and wanted to make this work, they were going to be okay. Or at least they would work to make sure that everything was going to be okay which was good enough in her book. And moving in with him was a big step but since she had no idea how long they would have together before they had to run again, she wanted to make sure they spent every moment they could together. And beside this really was the next step for them, what were they supposed to do after this anyway? Move in together was just the smart thing to do.
Or maybe it was not. Because they were different people, they loved each other deeply there was no questions there but they lived differently. Maria was not a clean freak but she was not a slob either, she kept her place tidy and things were not lying around everywhere all the time, or at least they had not been when she had been living on her own, but now that Michael was here there was stuff everywhere, his stuff mostly. And apparently football season was on. She didn’t know this because she liked football she knew this because Michael was watching it all Sundays for hours on end and this mixed with many different things were getting on her last nerve.
After coming home from her shift at the grill, Maria felt exhausted and wanted nothing more than to take the longest bubble bath. But as soon as she walked into the apartment she knew things were not going to go as planned. Maybe it was because she was tired but she knew she knew that whatever the reason was, she was about to lose it. She walked over and stood right in front of the television making sure she was blocking Michael. She crossed her arms and had that looked, the same look she usually had right before they were about to have a fight. “seriously!?” was all she said, her voice reaching a high pitch before walking to the kitchen

Maria finally returned home from work and Michael could tell that maybe not everything was ok with her as she told him that he knew where to find her and she left the room heading for the kitchen. Michael got up and made his way to the kitchen now to get a peach snapple where he saw Maria. He approached her and kissed her on the forehead. "How was work babe?" Michael asked her, hoping that that was what was bothering her, but knowing his luck it was probably him, something he did that had her thinking about something, which was typical for both of them.
If Michael went three days without doing something wrong, then it would be a freaking miracle. But for some reason Maria put up with him, she loved him and he loved her and she was the only one he had every said that word too. She was special to him, and he was special to her, even if everything wasn't always on a bed of roses. Michael should of known what was wrong, but then again, he was never the best boyfriend in the world and he knew it, so him not reading the signs was typical of him, he didn't expect an argument to break loose, but here it came.
"Is everything ok Maria?" Michael asked her opening the fridge and finding the peach flavored drink he loved so much and grabbing the bottle taking it out. At least they had a handful of these things, as Michael would probably end up going through some serious withdraws if not. Somehow, knowing that everyone he knew was here in Richmond made him feel way more at ease. Everyone would soon, hopefully be reunited and they can be a whole once again and not be on the run and apart from each other ever again, at least that is what Michael really wanted.
He took a drink of the snapple and looked at Maria, awaiting her answer as patiently as he could, not that Michael was ever accused on being the most patient guy in the world, but he was patient when it came to Maria on most things. But the awkward silence was killing him, and he had to find out why Maria wasn't acting like herself, he hopped it was nothing he did, but it probably did have something to do with him.

While she loved Michael, it didn’t mean that it didn’t get on her nerves often. They were both so different and it kind of meant that they had a lot working against them. It meant that they had to talk things through far too often and of course Michael had never really been one to want to talk so in the end Maria would end up being the one to do the talking and felt like she was talking to herself because Michael was not that receptive to her. or at least that way the way she was seeing it. She had been trying her best to also see things Michael’s way but of course whenever she tried she still saw him as the one in fault, just like himself she had trouble admitting she had been wrong.
‘’work was fine.’’ She told him, letting herself enjoy his embrace for a moment even if she knew it was just about to turn ugly because really he didn’t see what was going on. It was as if he was acting like everything was okay when really it was not. She started to work on the dishes that had been piling up in the kitchen sink and was quiet not wanting to talk because she knew that if she was to speak right now, things would take a turn for the worst so instead she kept quiet, not wanting to breakdown in front of him, even if she knew she was just delaying the inevitable.
Finally he asked her if everything was ok and she could not even look at him, she put her rag down and finally turned to watch him as he drank the Snapple. They went through so many bottles of this stuff it was not even funny, or it would be funny if it was the only thing that was going on right now, but it was not. “Are seriously asking me if everything is okay?” she asked shaking her head. “No everything is not okay Michael!” she told him looking at him in the eye. “what have you been doing all day?” Maria asked him.
“wait no don’t answer let me guess. You sat in front of the television all day not bothering to pick up your clothes, do some cleaning, pick up after yourself or make some dinner since you were already home, nor did you went out to try and find a job.” Maria said crossing her arms over her chest. “how right am I about this whole thing?”

It didn't take Michael long to realize why Maria was upset. He should of known all along, but Michael was clueless about such things. Michael was use to being alone, a drifter, having no one to care rather or not he made a mess and didn't clean it up. That was the last 5 years of his life, the only thing he missed about the last 5 years was doing what he wanted when he wanted with no consequences and no one to tell him he was being a lazy childish idiot. So part of Michael knew that this was coming from Maria, he only didn't expect it so fast.
Michael let her go on with her rant, letting her get it all off her chest. Michael knew that interrupting her now would only make things worse, so he waiting until she finished finally. Michael had to grow up, and he knew it. It wasn't like 6 or 7 years ago when they were together, he could live how he wanted to as he wasn't expected to share the chores, share the responsibility. He was just a kid back then, but now, now he was an adult and he was expected to act responsible and do the right thing and all that stuff, so he knew all this already.
"Maria, you are right." Michael finally responded to her when she finished yelling at him. It was probably the last thing she expected to hear out of his mouth right now, but there it was he said it. Michael was stubborn, and Maria knew that, but conceding to her that she had a point was the last thing she expected. "But do you have to be so mean about it?" Michael asked her, his own voice sounding irritated. Maria and him had their disagreements, like any other couple. But she never made him feel worthless before. He looked at her seriously.
"You think it is happening yelling at me, treating me like a child?" Michael asked her, he didn't like being mad at Maria and more then he liked it when she was mad at him, but he was upset now. "You are right, I need to change, I need to carry my own weight, but you expect me to change overnight? You expect me to be the perfect boyfriend right away?" Michael asked her, he understood where she was coming from and agreed with her, that didn't mean this conversation didn't hurt him, it didn't mean that he wasn't upset, he was and she had to know that.

Maybe she should have talked to him about it before hand, maybe she should not have waited so long before telling him what was on her mind. Because waiting meant that she had been keeping everything bottled up and that was not good, it meant that of course she was about to simply blow up. and it was most likely why she was telling him everything that was wrong in one go, barely taking the time to catch her breath. She was frustruated and could not really think straight. It would have been better to wait until she was in a better mood but she had never really been on to wait things out.
Beside how could he not see that things were wrong, they had been living together for a little while now and in what universe was it okay to leave your clothes laying around the room without picking up after yourself? It was not like he didn’t have time. The idea that she could be hurting him with her words didn’t cross her mind at that moment, she just needed to get this off her chest because she felt like the frustration she was feeling over Michael was taking over her and driving her insane. Finally she stopped speaking and looked at him waiting for his excuse because she was sure there was going to be one. There was always one.
But clearly she had not been ready for this, she had not been ready for him to tell her she was right and she was sure that this was showing on her face right now. The surprise. Wait he was telling her she was right. usually she would have most likely smile but then he spoke again telling her she had been mean about it she opened her mouth to speak but closed it as he spoke again and she saw the look in his eyes. She knew that without meaning to, she had hit hard and had hurt him. And of course she felt terrible. Her plan had never been to hurt him.
It was his turn to let things off his chest and hearing what he had to say of course hurt she had not wanted to treat him like a child. Maria licked her suddenly dry lips. “I don’t expect you to be the “perfect boyfriend.”” She told him using air quotes. “not anymore.” Of course there had been a time where she had expected him to do everything right as if she was expecting him to read her mind and be this image of perfection she had gotten when they were in high school, but it was not what she wanted out of him anymore. But she did want him to carry his own weight. She wanted someone she could count on. “I’m sorry Michael, I should have brought this to you in another way.” She told him leaning back on the counter.

Michael did not want an argument today, he did not want something like this to get Maria upset. She deserved a better boyfriend then he could ever be, and sooner or later, he was gonna have to start trying to let her go, and since letting her go was out of the question, as he loved her to much, then he had to change. Michael, change? It sounded like almost a dirty word in his mind. He was who he was, but for Maria,, if she needed more out of him then he gave her so far, then he would just have to man up and give it to her, she was worth it.
He didn't fight for 5 years to finally get her back to throw it all away over being lazy and stupid. Michael looked away from her as she spoke. "Good, cause I don't expect to ever come close to being the perfect boyfriend." Michael replied looking back at her. He would never be perfect, but that wouldn't stop him from trying. "I will do my best to be the best one I can be, I love you and you deserve better." Michael pointed out, glad that they were on the same page for once and that the yelling and fighting had stopped, he hated fighting with Maria.
"Nah, you reacted the way you thought was best." Michael told her moving closer to her to place his hand on her neck, to show her he forgave her. He looked her in the eyes. "I promise Maria, I will change, I will be a better boyfriend, I just don't think we should fight like that ever." Michael told her. Maybe it was Michael's childhood, but people fighting, especially when it involved him, over such things, really struck a nerve. He never had one peaceful day until he became his own man, and it just doesn't suit him for his relationship with Maria.
He didn't want things to turn out like his childhood did, and if it did, if things got that bad with Maria, Michael would not want to be alive anymore. He rubbed her neck and let her go, turning to go into the living area where he picked up his shirts and took them to the washing machine. He looked at it, doing his best to guess how to work the damn thing, at least he was trying right now, and that would have to be enough for the time being, right?

Maria had not planned to start a fight today but when she had seen the state the apartment was in, she could not help herself. She knew that Michael was doing this bet but really this was not enough and she felt like she was going to go insane if he didn’t start to pick up after himself. She should have talked to him when he first moved in, set some boundaries expectations but she had not wanted to think about that, she had wanted things to be perfect and how they were supposed to be, of course she had set herself for disappointment.
As he looked away from her, Maria felt like her heart was breaking. She knew she had been mean but she wondered how deeply she had hurt him. Thankfully he looked back at her. “I could never ask you this Michael. I love you for who you are.” She told him locking her eyes on him hoping that he would believe her. “I love you too and we will figure this out together. I just need to be more vocal about what I want and not expect you to simply guess these things.” She explained to him.
“you know me, I don’t tend to think that much before saying something.” She said as she looked up at him. “ I don’t want to fight with you either, ever.” She told him. “well maybe a few little arguments because the whole make up thing is great but I don’t ever want my words to hurt you again. They just needed to get used to each other again now that the honeymoon phase was gone it would not always be sunshines and rainbow but as long as they were together on this than it would be good.
Maria watched him as he walked around the apartment to pick his things up and could not help but smile. She followed him to where the washing machine was. “let me help.” She proposed before reaching over for the soap and explaining to him how that particular one worked. “or next time you can just put your clothes in the hamper and I will gladly clean them.” She proposed. “you and I we are a team now and we can help each other” Maria told him. She didn’t want him to feel like he had to do everything in the house but if he helped out even jst a little it would be plenty for her.

"And I love you, no matter what." Michael told her when she told him that she loved him just the way he was. "Thanks Maria, it would be nice to know what you want from me." Michael told her, he couldn't be her idea of perfect if she didn't tell him what perfect was. He needed her to communicate with him. Sure, he should probably know certain things, like cleaning up after himself, and doing the dishes if the sink gets to full, but he was still learning. "I guess I should probably start picking up after myself more." Michael told her, hearing that compromise was a good base in a relationship.
"Well, I don't tend to think at all. So you have a leg up on me in that department." Michael told Maria when she said she tended not to think about what she said. It was Michael's way of lightening the mood and the fact that it was probably true didn't hurt any. "Me either... and we both know that the making up part is the best." Michael said to her, managing a smile. He wanted to take her in his arms right now and begin the make up process, but it didn't seem like an appropriate time for that as they just had a bit of a fight, but he did approach her and place his hand on her neck.
Michael smiled at her, kissing her gently on the forehead. "That's all I ever wanted, to be a team, to be one with you." Michael told her, she was his home, she was his rock, she was his reason to live and he needed her to be there for him as much as she needed him to be there for her. "He placed his hands on her neck now that the washing machine was finally going and pulled her in for a quick kiss, before looking her in the eyes. "OK, Should I go ahead and do the dishes then." Michael told her with a grin, not that he knew how to use the dishwasher, but he would at least try.

Maria could not help but smile when he told her that he loved her no matter what. She felt the same way about him. She had tried being away from him, she had tried to not love him and break up with him but it had no worked because while their love story was not the stuff made of romance movie, she knew that they both loved each other more than anything. Nothing was perfect and neither were they. But together they completed each other, Maria knew she would not be half of the woman she was if it was not for Michael. He made her who she was and she would not change this for the world.
“its okay if you don’t. I can try and think for the both of us.” She told him with a soft smile on her lips. This was how it needed to be for them. They were to complete each other. Thinkning back, Maria could remember how far they had both gotten over time. There was no way they could have done it without each other. They fought like there was no tomorrow but they always made up and that was what was important in the end. Liz and Max might have been soul mates but Michael and Maria were something else completely. Maria could not help but smirk. “yeah we were always good at the making up part…” she mused out loud thinking about maybe going for the made up right away but there were still other things they would need to do.
“if you want we could do the dishes together. I can wash and you can dry?” she proposed. When she had been in Seattle she had not own a dishwasher not having the money for it so she had cleaned everything by hand and while at first it had been a hassle. Overtime she had come to like it. It was her quiet moment during the evening or morning or whenever she would have time. Maybe it could be their quiet moment now. “come on.” She said taking his hand and leading him to the kitchen. “So who is winning?” she asked pointing to the television. She didn’t even know which team was playing against which but still if it was something he liked she should start to be interested in it. Or at least try. She wanted to share everything with him and maybe it was time for her to start with his passions. Who knew maybe in time she would learn to like it.

Michael would be completely lost without Maria. Michael never had a home growing up, and if he didn't find Maria, or more like kidnap her and steal her car, then he would of never had a home. The last 5 years, alone, he felt lost, like he had no reason to be alive, getting back with Maria finally gave him that reason. He just couldn't form the words to tell her such a thing, Michael wasn't one to say gooey emotional stuff like that and he was lucky to be able to tell her that he loved her in so many words.
"Gee thanks." Michael said a little teasingly when she told him she could think for both of them. Michael knew she was only teasing him and she didn't think he was a complete moron. There was a difference between lazy and stupid, and Michael would admit all day long that he was lazy, stupid he was not. Maybe he wasn't the most well learned out of all of them, maybe he didn't have any goals, but he did know enough to where no one would ever question his ability to get along in day to day life. That was all he needed, he didn't need a big brain and a fancy alma mater to get by in this life or any life.
"Yeah." Michael said, wanting to just take Maria in his arms and make up with her right now, but that wouldn't be getting the chores done now would it. He decided that once he gets the chores done that he would take her and make up with her, if she allowed him to that was, which judging by the look on her face, he didn't think that was gonna be a problem. Michael nodded at her offer to do the dishes. This way he could watch to see how she does it and then he would know how to do it the right way on his own for the future so he could do it himself if she wanted him to, it was also something they could do together which anything with her was worth while.
"Even I can't screw up drying something off." Michael said with a grin. If he was able to screw that up, then he really was hopeless. He shrugged. "Dallas, hate them." Michael said when she asked who was winning and he waited for her to hand him the first freshly washed dish. Once he did he dried it and put it in the cupboard where he knew it came from as there were other dishes similar to that one in there, if they ran across a dish he didn't know where it went he would have to ask her. 'We want St. Louis to win." Michael said, well he wanted St. Louis to win anyways.

Maria was thankful for the relationship she had with her mother. Yes her father had walked out when she was just a smile child but her mother had done everything she could in order to keep Maria happy and make sure she had everything she needed. She knew how hard Michael had it but she would never really be able to understand it. Simply because she had never lived it. It was one thing to know but it was another thing to have been trough it before. And she wanted to make sure that he knew that with her he had a home. They didn`t need a house they just needed a place to call home.
And the small apartment they were currently sharing was going to be home. They just needed to be together to have a place to call home. The rest was just icing on the cake so to speak. Maria reached over to kiss the top of his nose. ‘’you are very welcome space boy.’’ She said with a smile. Michael was not stupid. He was actually quite smart but people often didn’t see that, Maria on the other hand knew him far too well to even think that he was stupid. He could be many things but stupid was not one of them.
Smiling at Michael, Maria was glad that their little fight moment was over. She hated to fight with him and never wanted to have to do it again. She wanted to just be happy with him. They didn’t need the constant fighting. She just needed to learn to talk instead of freaking out right away. It would make things easier on both of them if she could do just that. She knew that Michael was going to try his best to be good to her and all she really needed to do was to let him do that and maybe give him a slight nudge in the right way when it was needed. Just that could actually help both of them.
‘’you will be fine Michael. You need to believe in yourself.’’ She doubted that he though he would screw this up but at the same time she felt like often he felt like he was not good enough to her. and she wanted him to know that he was good enough for her. he was everything she wanted him to be and more. There was nothing else she wanted in this life other than him. No one else could ever be him. Maria kept on washing the dishes as she listen to him. ‘’okay so St. Louis it is. What color are they?’’ she asked as she looked over at the television.

As she kissed him on the nose and said that he was very welcome and called him space boy, he couldn't help but pull her in close and look her in the eyes. He kissed her gently on the lips, savoring her lip gloss flavor. "You are welcome, earth girl." Michael said to her. Seriously, Michael felt that Maria was the only person on this planet or any other planet that could call him space boy and get away with it completely. Anyone else called him it and he would probably punch them so hard he would end up breaking their jaw and his hand.
Michael managed a smile at Maria. He didn't smile much, as he often thought that he must look creepy when he smiles. Like a creepy stalker rapist or something. Michael had trouble believing in himself that he was doing stuff right at least when it came to there relationship. Right away he saw how romantic and thoughtful and perfect Max was with Liz and he was just horrible at it all. So for a long time he was to scared to tell her how much he cared for her, how much he loved her, because he felt like she deserved better then him.
Maybe it was true, that she deserved better, though she would never admit it and she would always deny it when he brought it up to her. Drying the dishes off and placing them in their right spot was much easier then Michael thought it was gonna be. Before he knew it they were down to the last few dishes. "The ones in blue and yellow." Michael told her when she asked what colors they wore. The TV was actually a pretty nice one for such a small apartment and even from the distance to the kitchen you could make out the game and the players.
Finally placing the last dish in the cabinet, they were done, at least with this chore. Michael looked at her, for some reason he wasn't really interested in the game anymore, he had something much better standing right in front of him. Michael managed another grin as he thought about something, playing with a strand of her hair and standing close to her. "There is still one more chore I have yet to attempt..." Michael said to her looking her in the eyes. It wasn't really a chore, in fact it was more fun then anything.
He picked her up quickly and carried her to her bedroom, now he guessed it was their bedroom. It was time to get to the best part of a fight, the making up part. He lay her on the bed and crawled in next to her, looking at her face. "I love you Maria DeLuca." He told her as he watched her face.
