Stefan had a feeling, a feeling that told him what he was doing was the wrong move. It started with Rebekah, running into her this morning. Luckily for Stefan, she, for whatever reason, seems to be on his side. He couldn't figure out why she wouldn't run to Klaus right away with the news, the epic news... Stefan had his emotions back. But after Rebekah teased him a little, told him off, she then just sent him on his way like everything was normal. For some reason, nice Rebekah was creepier then mean hateful Rebekah in Stefan's mind.
But it was what it was, now he was walking down the hallway of Mystic Falls High School, towards his first class of the day, history, his best subject, just what he needed to take his mind off of everything. Stefan tried to avoid the looks he got, the people staring at him, he knew why. He heard, or more like overheard the rumors. Some were outlandish, like he went to rehab for the summer and part of the school year, some were stupid, like he joined a traveling circus and became a lion tamer, but he got his hand bit off, so natually some people checked if his hands were real. He didn't care what they thought.
OK, that was a lie, he did care, and though some of them hurt, he knew it wasn't the persons fault. They tried to spread that he went to visit relatives in Italy for the summer and his relative got ill and he had to stay a little longer. But he knew the truth, as well as a select few, people that he trusted, as well as people whom he didn't trust knew what really happened to him. He heard one really nasty comment about how he ran off to be with a Russian girl and cheated on Elena. He felt anger boil up inside of him and moved to the males restroom.
Stefan leaned against the sink, looking down at his ring. Why did he have to come back for? Why couldn't he just stay home and pretend the rest of the world didn't exist? For the same reasons he returned to Mystic Falls in the first place, Elena. The thought of wishing that he had only cheated on Elena barely crossed his mind when a kid came in holding his nose. Stefan saw the blood trickle out of it and froze, stareing at the kid as he tried to stop his nose from bleeding. Stefan felt the temptation take a hold of him, his eyes changing to a dark color.
Stefan ran out of the bathroom, bumping into someone and forgetting his manors he didn't manage to say a I'm sorry to them, he didn't even know who they were, he just had to get out of there. He ran from the school and slumped against a tree as the rest of the students filed into the school. Stefan must of looked pale, paler then usual for him as he leaned against the tree. All he knew was his eyes weren't their normal shade and if anyone saw him like this, they would think he was high, or worse. He felt someone approaching and he turned to face the tree.
Still trying to calm himself. He didn't want to speak to them as he didn't want them to know what was going on. Stefan never had this much trouble with his eyes, he was the one to teach Caroline how to control it after all, but it did happen yes, but it usually stopped when he got away from the blood. He sighed, realizing the person wasn't going away. He turned to look at them, hoping that they would just think that he was high, that was the least of his worries, everyone thinking that the rehab story was real.
He didn't have time to tell them to go away when he noticed who they were. "Caroline?" Stefan said quietly, in a strange turn of events, it was Caroline's turn to help Stefan in a situation that he helped her with last year.

----------------------- ----------------------- Caroline had skipped out on class, well this was the only class anyway but she doubted many seniors were there. Exams were over with pretty much and it was their last year. Prom was coming up and more than anything she just wanted this year to wipe out all the horrors of what had happened last year, although it had turned out to be one of the worst years she had ever come across. Everything had gone terribly wrong and now she was skipping classes, something Miss Caroline Forbes had never been known to do. She had become Miss Mystic Falls for a reason and it was because of her good grades and her work into the community. No she would make this year work but she just needed a day, a day to herself and focus all of her attentions. The last few days alone had been a complete and utter disaster and she just needed someone to talk to about it but no one was ever around. Elena and Bonnie were in class and she was yet to see Stefan back at school.
Walking the corridors she went straight to her locker. Maybe heading into the library and just studying would be enough to get her mind off of everything, she had to keep herself distracted somehow. Pulling out her phone from her bag she looked at it and was tempted to call Klaus. Klaus of all people but she held her ground, he was the one who had left with nothing other than an email and she still didn't know when he was coming back. She figured she could ask Rebekah but the two of them hadn't spoken in awhile. It seemed Care was good at avoiding everyone when she needed to. She thought back to her meeting with Tyler and wanted to shudder, it had been horrific and something she really didn't need a repeat of. Of course now he was going to try and blame it on her for barging in on him but how could he lie to her like that? Right to her face, she thought they had been long past all of that.
Closing her locker she swung her bag onto her shoulder and was barrelled right into. of course she was, it was just her kind of day for everyone to not look at her rather right through her. But when she looked up and saw it was Stefan and he was practically running down the hall she frowned a little. Ok that was weird, normally he would have at least apologize or realise who had banged into. Opening to door to the guys restroom she was and scented everything she needed to. Someone was bleeding and Stefan had been in there and was thinking about loosing control. Well not to day. Closing the door behind her she picked her phone up which had fallen to the ground and headed out. Wearing heels to school were normally not a good idea and was even harder when she was chasing after a vampire.
Heading outside she saw him disappear and smiled. Using her sense of smell and hearing to track him down completely she walked over to where he was leaning against a tree out of sight of the school. Yeah it had been a close call but this was something she loved about him, he always tried to do what was right and pulling himself away so soon would have been really hard. She smiled at him as she walked to him and waited for him to realise she was even there. When he spoke her name she smiled softly towards him. "You know when you barge into someone your supposed to apologize at least"
She spoke with a smile and walked forward into the cover the trees also. "I saw what happened. Elena would be proud and so am I." She spoke with a smile and touched his upper arm for reassurance. She wanted to purge her own problems but felt like it was her turn to be the listener, they hadn't spoken much since he had come around to apologize. Stefan still wasn't controlling it very well. His stomach had that all to familiar feeling of emptiness, of hunger. The ever present feeling, it didn't matter if he drank 100 gallons of blood, it was still there, He felt like at any moment he could lose it, just snap and run back into the school and sink his teeth into the first neck he came across, draining it dry. That was until she came along, Caroline. The girl that reminded him so much of Lexi had showed up in the moment of his greatest need to date, she approached him, and rubbed his arm.
Stefan felt himself calm down a bit, though it wasn't completely over, it was subsiding for now. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to." Stefan replied, it was in reply to bumping into her, of course he was sorry and any other time he would of apologized instantly for it, heck any other time it probably wouldn't of happened in the first place. "I'm not myself lately." Stefan told her, managing a smile. People think he was a drug addict, or a circus freak, or whatever they wanted, that stuff was fine, but people thinking that he would cheat on Elena, that bothered him.
The fact he did cheat on Elena, even though he wasn't himself, didn't help any. But Stefan as he was right now would never cheat on Elena. He would prefer people thinking that he was a stone cold murderer then a cheater, and since both were true, it was like torture on him. Elena never brought up what he did, Stefan knew she probably didn't want to know, but the people he hurt and some of them that he ended up sleeping with before murdering, it wasn't a pretty picture, and Stefan would not want to tell Elena no matter what anyways.
But Caroline standing before him made him feel better. Lexi standing before him would of just made him feel worse. It wasn't because Lexi was better then Caroline or vice versa, it was that Lexi had seen him far worse then Caroline ever has. Lexi would be less forgiving of him nearly slipping up. It was pretty much the one instance that the two blonde vampires were complete opposite to each other in Stefan's mind. Caroline, though her fury can be strong and ruthless, was much more caring, more nurturing. Lexi would tell Stefan to suck it up and stop being a baby, Caroline would encourage him.
The truth was, Stefan needed both sides of that coin. He needed to be whipped into shape and he also needed someone to keep his head on straight. Which was why he was glad to have two best friends now instead of one. She told him that Elena would be proud and so would she. Though this helped, it also made Stefan think that he was the worst person that ever lived. "Why don't I feel proud of myself then, Caroline?" Stefan asked her, his eyes looking at her finally returning to normal, at least he knew he wouldn't walk into that school and kill someone now.
"If I could control, I wouldn't have to worry about something like this happening. If I was a better person, I wouldn't feel this need to feed on them." Stefan added, he didn't feel any better right now. He wondered why, why he had to go through this, Caroline always seemed so in control, like she would be the perfect vampire example and Stefan was the worst. He only knew one thing, and that was that he could not walk back into that school, as if he did, he didn't know what was gonna happen, so he knew he had to go home, and try again some other time.

----------------------- ----------------------- Caroline was one of those people who hated to see those that she cared about suffering. She hated the thought that there was nothing she could do to take away some of their pain and knew that she would do anything to make it easier on that person. However it was never that easy and someone like Stefan needed more than what she could give him sometimes. It didn't mean that they couldn't talk it all out and see if unloading helped. She knew she had to do the same thing, she wanted to explain what had happened when she had finally gone around to see Tyler, or that Klaus had disappeared from town with nothing more than a mere freaking email. The fact that Bonnie was too busy to even reply to a text message and the small fact that there were more hunters in this town than she had ever imagined to begin with.
Approaching Stefan when he was in one of those kind of moods could actually be dangerous for everyone around him. However Care felt pretty confident that the moment he realised who it was that he wouldn't harm her and simply use her to lean on in his small time of need. It was what friends were for after all. She smiled when he apologized for bumping into her but she shrugged it off and simply nudged him instead with a small smile. "Don't stress about it. I figured out what made you rush off so fast and hey at least your out here on your own and not with the kid with the broken nose. That could have been a really bad day for him"
She spoke with a small smile. When he said he hadn't been himself she reached out to him and squeezed the top of his arm. "Give it a bit more time, you'll be back to normal soon enough" She spoke hopefully reassuringly. She had been at the school for only a day when she had found out that Stefan had also been back today. However it also hadn't taken her long to hear the rumours that were already circulating about what was happening. Or what people thought had happened whilst he had been off on his own. Most of them were convinced that Stefan had been having an affair and that was the reason he had been off, with some other girl. Caroline knew it wasn't true, mainly because she knew Stefan almost as well as she knew Elena. He would never cheat on her, she was the love of his life and not to mention their kind of epic love couldn't be changed. When she heard the rumour the first time it had taken everything she had not to turn and scare the hell out of the freshman. No she needed better control but she wanted to help Stefan out, there had to be something she could do to stop the rumours spreading about him before it was too late and Elena heard one of them. It was only a matter of time after all. His question caught her off guard but at the same time she should have been expecting it. Of course he would be feeling as though he couldn't be proud of himself but if only he knew how many people were supporting him right there and then. She rolled her eyes at him and dropped her school bag on the floor next to the tree. "Because you can imagine another voice in your head telling you to suck it up am I not mistaken? Don't worry Stefan. You resisted so you should be proud. Your getting better every day and for that, we are proud of you" She spoke with a smile and leant against the tree opposite him. It was more comfortable than just standing around and since he was starting to calm down she felt like she didn't need to be on guard around him now. Although it wouldn't take much for him to just suddenly snap today, something even she could sense. She knew he was trying to find an answer as to why he was this way, why he found it so much harder than others did. She had no clue why herself but knew she would have to look into it. She sighed a little. "Your not alone Stefan. I want to kill a few people sometimes. You taught me how to control it. I wouldn't be able to if it wasn't for you" She spoke encouragingly. It was true, if it hadn't been for Stefan she would have killed a lot of people. Matt included. She smiled. "Want me to take your mind off it and unleash all of my guy drama on you? Especially considering your the only person I've really told about Klaus so it makes you a little special. I really should tell Elena and Bonnie about how I feel about him although Bonnie already kinda knows" She spoke with a shrug and hoped her rambling would keep his mind occupied as well. "Thanks Caroline." Stefan said, happy to have someone as caring as Caroline to make him feel a smidgen better. He really didn't mean to bump into her and she was a tough girl so she probably hardly felt it anyways, still Stefan didn't like that it was her he nearly ran over, he didn't want to hurt her or anyone else again. He was doing his best, but just a drop of blood is enough to make him want to rip into the person's throat, and he couldn't do it, not now, not ever and being around people, knowing what is in their veins was almost like torture in itself.
But Stefan promised he would go through it." Yeah, he would not be a happy person right now." Stefan said trying to smile though he failed horrible at it. Stefan was dangerous, more dangerous then Damon when you actually thought about it. At least Damon can control himself, but for Stefan it was always 1 of 2 extremes, the bunny diet, avoiding drinking from humans at all cost, or killing them brutally. There was no middle ground. When Damon snaps, it is with reason and purpose, when Stefan does it, it is just to feed his undying thirst.
"I hope that is true Caroline." Stefan told her when she told him to give it a bit more time. He decided not to point out that the last time this happened it took him nearly 40 years to calm down completely. This time felt different however, Stefan has a reason now, a reason he has never had before. "I am sure you are right." Stefan said suddenly, though for some reason it didn't come out as if he meant it, part of him did, but a part of him, a huge part, the hungry part, would never allow him to admit such a thing, that it was possible for him not to tear into someone at the mere sight of blood.
Stefan nodded, he did hear a voice in his head. It was the same voice every time now a days, and it should be no shock or mystery of who the voice belongs to. He heard it tell him flat out to run, to get away from the kid, Stefan didn't even know his name and a few minutes ago that voice was the only thing keeping Stefan from ripping his head off. But it worked. That was the problem last time, Stefan didn't have that voice to stop him when things got bad. "Maybe your right, Caroline." Stefan said, Caroline was always right about such things or so it seemed.
She was right again, Stefan did help her get through it. For some reason whatever was working for him then wasn't working now though. It just felt like no matter how much he consumed, no matter how many he killed, the hunger was always there now. It was there before, but he got through it for a long time with no incident. Blaming Klaus for this development was to easy of a scapegoat in this situation. It wasn't all Klaus, part of Stefan had to, wanted to feed and kill those people, and that was the scariest thought of them all.
Stefan remembered that night all to well. Bonnie wasn't there for Caroline, and Elena didn't know what to do, so she couldn't help. It fell on Stefan. Stefan pulled her into the bathroom after helping save Caroline from Damon and started to clean her up, trying to calm her down. Caroline was clearly upset and Stefan took her head into his hands and helped her calm down. He then made a promise, one he intended on seeing through now more then ever, that he would never let anything happen to her. Stefan cradled her in his arms and let her get it out.
The problem was, Stefan tried to help others and failed horribly. Caroline was the only one he was able to get to calm down, the only one that has made it so far. "I did my best that night Caroline. It was you. You had to want to control it. I only gave you the push you needed, the rest was you." Stefan told her, it was kind of the truth, but he also felt like he was selling his role short in it. He nodded at her request. Anything to take his mind off of what he almost did to that poor kid, what he has done to other kids in the past.
"Its not going good huh?" Stefan asked her, he didn't dare bring up him and Elena when Caroline was clearly not in a happy relationship. He felt bad for her, he knew what it was like to like an original, to want to trust Klaus. He only supported her because it meant a lot to her, and she needed support, it was what friends are for. He would never think less of her because she liked someone. Stefan once liked Rebekah and Katherine for instance. So he really wasn't one to judge. But if Caroline thought Klaus was worth it, then he would support her in her quest.

----------------------- ----------------------- Caroline only had to take one look at Stefan to know what was happening. She remembered when she had first been turned and every moment she was around humans it had been like a temptation or a disaster just waiting to happen. The fight it had been not to kill and feed on everyone she came across had been almost impossible and yet she had fought anyway. It was because of people like Stefan that she had and she would forever be thankful to him for that. She figured that he was going through exactly that now, as though anything or anyone that came across him was nothing more than a walking and talking temptation. He needed someone to ground him, to remind him of who he really was. She knew she was the person for the job, for some reason she could get through to him and he needed her now, she could have left him on his own but she had to be here for him, had to help him out when he needed it.
She smiled towards him when he thanked her. It seemed she was good at reminding him that it was only just the beginning and things would get better soon enough. Of course they would because they couldn't get any worse than they had for the last few months, heck year and a bit. "Your welcome. Hey so I'm planning a party at the grill for no reason but to party. Do you reckon it would attract enough fun for us to actually forget real dramas?"
She asked with a small smile. Planning a small party couldn't hurt anyone and she figured who better to plan it than herself? It would be an awesome distraction and not to mention would keep her mind away from a certain original hybrid, also keeping Stefan's mind off of everything that he was trying not to feel guilty for and in secret really was torturing himself. Caroline could tell this was really starting to eat up at Stefan and yet here he was trying his hardest. She couldn't believe he had come back to school so soon. She knew he was doing this for Elena, he was trying to get through it all to try and show her he was getting better. Yet she wanted to yell at him that he didn't have to try this hard and make himself suffer in the proves. "Have you met me? I'm always right!" She said trying to cheer him up. He was down and she just wanted him to start living again and not brooding away feeling bad about everything. She shoved his shoulder a little with a small smile playing on her lips. "Don't you go second guessing me, you know it doesn't end well for you. You were here for me and now i'm here for you. What are friends for right? Also you know I won't let you hurt anyone." She spoke letting him know that he could relax a little, whilst she was standing right there nothing was going to happen. Stefan was suffering and all she wanted to do was to take his pain away. She thought of Elena, although the two of them seemed to be drifting further and further away as of recently, she also knew that Elena wouldn't know what to do with herself if Stefan wasn't around. Care had to help in anyway possible. The conversation brought her back to the carnival only one day after she had been turned. She had killed someone and had been an emotional wreck, her anchor had been Stefan. He had calmed her down and showed her how to control the feeling of the blood rushing and letting your control slip. The fight she struggled with for awhile and soon learned how to ignore it. It was the same fight Stefan was having all the time and she wouldn't let him lose control again, she couldn't. He had been for her back then and it had connected them, made them become good friends and she wouldn't trade that in for the world. They started talking about that day where Elena had saved her life by standing in front of her whilst Damon tried to stake her right there and then. She had felt good knowing her friends weren't going to abandon her. She nodded and smiled a little. "I didn't want to be a monster. But after that I always looked to you, to see how you handled everything. You were definitely my mentor. So now i'll be yours and when you feel the blood rush, close your eyes take some deep breaths and calm yourself down before you do anything." She said trying to help him the way he had helped her. Caroline and Stefan were one in the same in a lot of ways, only Care was more neurotic and controlling as a vampire than he was. Her emotions got the best of her more times than she could count and yet she still turned to Stefan during those times. She growled a little, her guy drama was way over the top right now. She was soo pissed at Tyler, before she had been upset but willing to show they could come out of this friends, but now she was nothing but angry at him. He had lied to her face after all and this thing with Klaus was even more frustrating. "Well I did what you said. I spoke to Tyler only for him to have lied to my face and is now living with another girl, another hybrid from the smell of her. Then we have Klaus who just left town and sent me a crappy email saying going away on business. That was it! I swear if it wasn't for you and Elena and your epic love then I would be ready to swear off guys forever." She knew she sounded like an exasperated school girl and yet she couldn't help it. Tyler had really pissed her off and Klaus as well. Guys were soo not worth the hassle at the moment. ----------------------- -----------------------
Stefan was thankful to have two very similar but very different best friends. They were both tough no none sense girls that did what they had to do. Where they differed was Lexi was the one that kicked his ass and made him do something, like turn his humanity back on. Caroline somehow talked him into remaining calm with no threats or torture or no willingness to try and hurt him. She was there for him emotionally, like Lexi was, but in a different way. He really needed both of them to get through this. He knew there was tension between them and wanted to fix that.
"I don't know. Me? Have fun?" Stefan asked her smiling. Him allowing himself to have fun right now seemed like an incredibly bad idea, but trying to have fun instead of sitting at home and wallowing in self pity and hatred seemed like a more constructive way to spend his time. Could it really hurt? "We could give it a try." Stefan said, realizing she probably really wanted it, though he wasn't sure he would want to stick around for the whole party, just being around people right now was a bad idea and he would probably have to cut out early.
"You need my help with it?" Stefan offered, though he secretly hopped she declined. Last thing he wanted to do was help plan a party. Well last thing he wanted was to go to a party, but a close 2nd was planning the party. "Still worried about Klaus?" Stefan asked her. Sometimes it was easy to forget that everyone had problems, not just him, but Stefan knew there was very little he could do to help out in this instance. "Caroline, it will all work out in the end." He told her, all he could do was tell her to remain confident in her situation, as a friend should do.
He smiled as she spoke about her always being right. He guessed she had a point Caroline always seemed to be right when it came to such things. Another thing she had in common with Lexi. "Yeah I should know better by now." Stefan said managing a genuine smile back. She then promised that as long as she was around she wouldn't let him hurt anyone. "I know, Caroline." Stefan said, in response, sometimes she wasn't gonna be there. He couldn't count on her to always be there, she had her own life and own problems and it wasn't fair to rely on her the whole time.
Its the times she is not there that he was worried about. When he was alone with another person. When he was in a room full of people and she was busy doing something else. Those were the times he dreaded. Those were the times that Stefan wanted to just hide in his room, writing in his journal or better yet, laying in bed doing nothing. It was the same for everyone else. Rather it was Lexi or Elena or Caroline, they all couldn't watch him 24 hours a day, he couldn't ask that of them and it was unfair to them if he did.
"You're not a monster, Caroline. You will never be a monster. That makes you so much more then I will ever be. You have never given in to those monster urges after the first time. You didn't want to. The problem is, a part of me always wants to, you don't have that." Stefan told her, placing a hand on her shoulder. Stefan, or anyone for that matter, should never consider Caroline a monster. It wasn't fair to her as she never acted like one, not yet anyways and Stefan doubted she ever would. She was just to good at all of this.
He nodded, it was almost the same advice he gave her, about just taking a moment to calm down and take a deep breath. Stefan removed his hand from her shoulder. The worst night of his time with Caroline was when he broke her heart. He hated seeing that look on her face, he hated her thinking that she just wasn't good enough. Any guy would be lucky to have her. That was one of Stefan's worst moments and he hasn't made up for it yet. He had to come up with something to fix her love life, as he owed it to her in his mind.
He wished he could just tell Klaus that he should get with Caroline, that they belonged together, maybe it would fix more then just one problem as well, but that was beside the point. He felt like a total jerk that night when he told Caroline that he wasn't interested in her, as she didn't deserve to be put down like that, he wondered if she even remembered it still or not? Part of him wanted her to forget, but part of him wanted her to remember as he would never be able to forget it. Stefan just smiled at her response of her guy drama.
He wanted to fix it but at the same time he thought it was adorable how she was reacting to it all. It was exactly how he expected her to act. He knew Klaus better then anyone in this town, other then the other originals that is, and he felt that Caroline was lucky to get an email, to get anything from him. Klaus wasn't a really thoughtful person when it came to other peoples feelings. "Caroline, just give Klaus some time to come around. Only an idiot would pass up on you for to long." Stefan told her, Klaus would come around.
He really didn't know what to say to Tyler. He thought that it was uncool of him to do that to Caroline. Lying to her face and treating her like that. He would probably end up texting him later and telling him off, you don't do that to Stefan's friends, as he doesn't have that many to begin with. "I'm sorry Tyler did that to you. You don't deserve that." He told her truthfully. In truth he was happy to be talking about this stuff as he forgot for a few moments that he almost ripped someones head off a few moments ago.
