- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Elena’s mind was completely blank as she told the older girl Stefan’s story. She could easily remember when she had learned all the pieces to the puzzle. She remembered after hearing the old man speak to Stefan at the Grill and then doing more research thanks to Logan Fell at the News Station. She remembered the fear and absolute panic she had been in when she watched Stefan walk out of the old boarding house on the black and white film from a news story in 1953. Tiki’s grandfather had been the one to let that tid bit slip out but even before that she had known that something wasn’t right.
She remembered sitting in her room, writing in her diary, and something inside her broke at the knowledge that her boyfriend…the man who had saved her soul the day they met at school (since at that time she hadn’t realized he had literally saved her life during her parents car crash) was something that didn’t make sense to her. She had never believed in ghosts or goblins or vampires or werewolves. She could barely remember the words she had written in her diary the day before last and yet those words were etched painfully into her subconscious.
Dear Diary, I'm not a believer. People are born, they grow old, and then they die. That's the world we live in. There's no magic, no mysticism, no immortality. There's nothing that defies rational thought. People are supposed to be who they say they are and not lie or hide their true selves. It's not possible. I'm not a believer, I can't be. But how can I deny what's right in front of me? Someone who never grows old. Never gets hurt... Someone who changes in ways that can't be explained. Girls bitten...Bodies drained of blood.
She remembered stopping there and running out of her house, driving recklessly to Stefan’s house and standing in front of the door. She remembered getting ready to knock and then chickening out and before she could turn away Stefan opening the door and her simply asking him what are you? She remembered him telling her and running away from him in a panic. That was how she was. She’d freak out at first but then curiosity would win out, just as it had with him. She had tried staying away from him and yet she couldn’t.
Listening to Buffy speak it seemed as if the two had more in common than either thought and she nodded. “I’d like to hear it. It’d be nice for Stefan to have someone to talk to other than Damon, me or Lexi.” She stated before settling in to listen to the other girls’ story.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Instead of sitting at the picnic table that they were currently seated on she stood up and waited for Elena to follow her. She knew that she needed to get going so instead of sitting around and talking she figured she would have the younger girl follow her on a quick patrol. It would help get them moving and it would also get her blood flowing since she was currently freezing. She once again berated herself for not thinking to bring a jacket and instead of obsessing about it she simply figured a way around it. “I need to do a couple sweeps.” She told her before correcting herself, knowing that it wouldn’t make any sense to the other girl. “I need to go look around the cemetery, you are more than welcome to come with me and hear the story.” She told her, and was not at all surprised when the other girl agreed.
The two walked in silence for a few moments until they reached the cemetery before Buffy started her story…well…it wasn’t hers but it was a story that she had learned through different channels…between the Watcher’s Diaries, Angel himself, Spike, Drusilla and the small time she had heard Darla speak. She had also learned more than she cared to admit from Angelus but she pushed that thought to the back of her mind, not wanting to remember the way that his words caused her heart to freeze.
“Angel is older than Stefan...he is 249 years old I believe.” She stated, thinking about the calculations from when he had told her that in 243 years he’d loved exactly one person. 18…19…20…21…22…23 “Yes, he’s 249. He was turned in Ireland by a woman named Darla. She chose him because he was strong…and beautiful. He did what most vampires do right after being turned. He went with Darla and he killed his family…killing his 11 year old sister first and then killing his father and mother. His father he had always hated but as a human he had worshiped his mother and his sister…so that should tell you right there how far he went and how quickly it had happened.” She told her the younger girl, though she wasn’t even looking at her. Her eyes which were focused on the headstones around her, were actually seeing the pictures in her head of the story that she had known much deeper than anyone could ever realize.
It was for this reason alone that she jumped slightly when the younger girl interrupted her with a question and she smiled sheepishly before asking her to repeat it.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -The young brunette listened softly and was surprised when the older girl stood up and motioned for her to follow her. Usually Elena would have stayed right where she was, preferring to stay on neutral territory however she trusted the slayer and knew that she wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. It also didn’t hurt that she was going to get more information than she had previously and one of her many flaws had always been that she hated not knowing things. She didn’t like secrets and while this may not have classified exactly as a secret it was something that she didn’t know and she wanted to get it out in the open.
The two walked in silence, something that Elena tended to dislike for the most part. It wasn’t that she didn’t like silence, it was more that she wanted to get this show on the road and have answers to several of her questions that she couldn’t wait to have answered. She had too many things that she didn’t know…not only about the girl walking next to her but also about the vampire that she seemed to be in love with. She knew from hearing her and Willow talking that apparently she and Stefan reminded them of Buffy and her lover…but how so?
The young girl listened intently as the older girl finally spoke and her eyes widened as she listened. Wow, Angel and Stefan really did have similar backgrounds. Not only had they both been turned by selfish woman who wanted them for what they could give them, but also both Stefan and Angel had murdered their fathers. It seemed Angel took it a step further and murdered his mother as well but she had no doubt that after the flip had been switched, had Stefan’s mother been alive he would have murdered her as well.
What struck Elena though was the sibling connection as well. Angel had murdered his younger sister and for all intents and purposes Stefan had done a step further with Damon and forced him to turn. Sure Damon had already technically been dead but they had both been willing to die at that point until Stefan had flipped the switch. She knew that Stefan had always felt guilty for that however she was surprised to hear that Angel seemed to be worse than Stefan on a bad day…and that was saying something.
She couldn’t help but interrupt and smiled knowingly when Buffy asked her to repeat her question. “What happened to the woman who turned him? Did he stay with her or did he rebel?” She asked, thinking of Stefan’s hatred towards Katherine.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -The blonde didn’t answer for a moment, instead standing still and allowing her senses to take over. She didn’t want to avoid the question however she did start to feel the stirring of a vampire nearby. She had checked the news earlier in the day and heard of someone dying from strange bites, one of the reasons she had wanted to patrol in this area. She doubted the vampire had risen yet which was why her senses weren’t fully there yet however she could feel it towards the middle of the cemetery and so that’s where she headed, thinking of how to best answer Elena’s question while keeping her eyes peeled for anything that needed to be dealt with.
“I’ll tell you more about Darla later but long story short after a hundred years or so the two parted ways and then they met up again. She tried to hurt someone Angel loved and he ended up staking her.” She told her simply, not going into the fact that they had parted ways because Angel had his soul returned, or the fact that the person she had tried to kill was her, nor that Darla had reborn in a way by Wolfram and Hart. She doubted she would tell her that either way as it wasn’t something she liked to talk about however either way she didn’t go into that particular detail yet…wanting to go in order so she didn’t forget anything that could be deemed as important.
“So after Angel…well…he didn’t go by Angel at the time, he went by Angelus…and that’s how I differentiate between the two just so you know.” She stated, not getting into the fact that technically his human name had been Liam and he had changed it to Angelus and all sorts of other stuff that would just confuse her, she went on. “Angelus killed his parents and then went off with Darla. They pretty much slaughtered whole towns for fun and Angelus quickly became famous among vampires and humans alike. He was known as the Scourge of Europe or the demon with the face of an angel.” She stated, though the last part was said almost fondly. It was true though, she had always found that Angel’s name definitely fit him due to looking the part.
“Angelus wasn’t like most vampires. He liked the mental torture almost as much as the physical. He became obsessed with a woman named Drusilla who had visions. He killed her entire family and drove her insane. The day she took her holy vows to become a nun, he turned her into a demon. Drusilla was the worst creation he ever made, and rather soon after he made her she wanted a playmate of her own and she made Spike. The four of them were a team until they fed on a cult of gypsies.” She stated however stopped before she could continue as she heard a stirring of something a few headstones over. “Stay here and don’t make a sound.” She ordered, not wanting to sound rude but also not wanting to put her in harm’s way.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She listened intently, feeling as if she was gathering information from behind enemy lines only the person she was getting information from wasn’t an enemy, nor was the person she was getting information about. She doubted that Stefan would be impressed with learning that she had done this by herself without his knowledge but she also knew that he would be interested in hearing someone’s story, especially when it was so similar to his own. It was clear to her that Angel’s story was far worse than Stefan’s however the similarities could not be overlooked…at least not in her book.
She could see the tension in the older girls’ shoulders when she spoke about the other three that were a part of Angel’s group. She briefly wondered if she had history with them as well but pushed that thought to the side for a moment, though she knew she would ask about them at a later moment. She knew that vampires tended to kill one another off when they had no more use for them, at least according to the stories that she had heard from Lexi, as well as what she had observed with Katherine, Isobel and Anna. So were the other three dead or were they running around somewhere with souls like Angel? She had more questions than she had answers it seemed.
Before she could ask the question she was dying to ask she was ordered to stay by the headstone and not to make a noise. She felt a swell of indignation rise up within her however she also knew that common sense had to overrule the brief bit of irritation she felt at being ordered around. If the vampire slayer told her to stay where she was, that was what she was going to do whether she liked it or not. The last thing she wanted to do was get hurt and start a war between the two groups because she hadn’t listened.
She watched in awe as the blonde worked flawlessly against four opponents, taking them all on herself and barely breaking a sweat as she did. Her movements were fluid, deadly, and quick…and she for the first time thought that Stefan and Damon had no idea what they were up against when it came to fighting skills. She had always thought that Damon and Stefan were decent fighters yet seeing a profession…she briefly wondered how they had all gotten through everything they had without proper training.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -It didn’t surprise her at all that the other girl looked positively annoyed by the questions that she was bringing up. She knew personally how it felt to be given information and yet having more questions than answers. It was annoying and she had always hated it. The perfect example in her book had been the Glory fiasco that was spearheaded by the Watcher’s Council. She remembered needing to know desperately what Glory was so that she could defeat her. She remembered thinking constantly that as soon as they found out what type of demon she was that Giles and Willow, along with the rest of the soobies, would batten down the hatches and find the demon’s weakness
And then Quentin Travers had uttered those famous words…well…famous now that he had said them in front of all of them. Well, that's the thing, you see. Glory isn't a demon. What is she? She's a god.
She remembered feeling her eyes widen and simply stating Oh only because she had no idea what else to say. She remembered the helplessness she had felt during that time and the numerous questions that sped through her mind on a continual basis, so she did understand why Elena looked frustrated.
Unfortunately before she could help she had sensed four vampires towards the south edge and she ordered Elena quickly to stay where she was. Taking a deep breath she fell into her practiced act, one that she had perfected over the years. Most people saw her and thought easy meal because she was small, blonde and a girl. Walking around idly she could feel two behind her but continued to let them circle her. She had learned a long time ago that having an enemy circle you made it easier on you as there wasn’t so much running around involved meaning that one could focus all their energy on the fight.
She surveyed the two walking towards her, keeping her senses directly on the ones behind her. They looked new, though not fledglings. Maybe fifty or sixty years at best, though she wasn’t the best judge. She did know though from their power that none of them had seen a century and this gave her a small bit of confidence since she knew she had not only her own life to worry about, but Elena’s as well.
Surprisingly enough the two in front of her didn’t even pretend that they wanted to walk her home or any of the usual stuff she was used to, they simply attacked, as did the two behind her. It took her mere moments before the dust settled in front of her and she slid her stake back up her sleeve, walking back over towards Elena with a smile. “Now, where was I?” She asked, knowing that the other girl had questions and she figured she would answer them before she went on.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She watched silently as the vampires all turned to dust, something she hadn’t seen before. She of course knew the rumors or more accurately the myths that vampires turned to dust however the vampires that she had seen staked had simply turned to almost stone, giving an aged look before dying. She had never seen something as strange as here one minute and gone the next in a cloud of dust. And since her life was pretty damn strange these days it was definitely something to say that it was the weirdest thing she had ever seen. She briefly wondered if any of the vampires she knew were aware that there were other species and put that on her long mental checklist of things to ask them later.
Her eyes were still on the place where the vampires had once stood when Buffy made her way back to her and it took her a few moments before she could form a word. She usually didn’t get surprised…at least not anymore with everyone that she had been faced with the past year or so…however this was different. This small girl, shorter than her and really just as thin from what she could see, had taken all of those vampires on herself and didn’t even seem to break a sweat. “How?” She croaked out before clearing her throat, feeling like a complete moron but knowing she needed to ask. “How are you able to do those things?” She asked her before hurrying to explain further her question.
“I mean I know you’re a vampire slayer, you told me that, and while I get the gist of it how are you picked? Is there like a list somewhere and is it genetics that make you so strong or is it something that you can learn?” She asked, knowing that if she could do even half of what the other girl had just done that she would not be nearly as big of a liability to those that she cared about as she was now. She doubted it would be that easy since she clearly remembered Alaric and Damon both trying to train her and not coming out feeling the best after they had both beaten her but still, it couldn’t hurt to ask right?
“As for where you were…you were talking about two vampires named Drusilla and Spike I believe?” She asked, the strange names sounding unfamiliar coming from her mouth though she was sure those were the names she had spoken.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She knew the look that Elena was wearing well. It was the same look that Willow and Xander had once had when looking at her after she had saved them from vampires. Well, maybe not the same look since both of them had been worried about Jesse at the time however it was still that awed look to see someone so small and unassuming taking on vampires. Granted none of the vampires she had just dusted had been the strongest fighters or really the smartest but still, she could understand how it would look. She had seen the look enough time to recognize it.
It was because of this that she waited patiently for Elena to gather her thoughts before asking her question. Her first question made her shake her head sadly before answering. “It’s hard to explain. Yes the strength and the speed is part genetics however until a slayer is actually called its dormant in them. It’ll come out if forced for instance if they are in a life or death situation they can use it but once the adrenaline rush isn’t there they won’t be able to any longer until they are called as the slayer.” She started, not going into the fact that before blowing up Sunnydale Willow had activated all the known slayers. Much too confusing and really while she trusted Elena, she didn’t want to give away those specific secrets to someone who spent so much time around not only decent vampires, but evil ones as well…especially the originals she had been hearing so much about.
“As for can you learn it…that’s a hard question. Anyone can learn to fight and anyone can go to the gym and get stronger. Can you learn to be as strong as a slayer? No. Can you learn to fight with as much accuracy and speed as a slayer? Doubtful. Can you learn how to fight and be strong in your own way? Yes. Willow and Xander? They both know how to fight and yet both are human. Well, Willow is a witch but still, both are before anything human and yet my watcher and I worked with them and now they are more than capable of taking on vampires if necessary. Not that I want them out trying to do so every night like I do but if they are needed in a fight or if they get cornered I am confident that they can get away.” She stated, her voice proud when speaking of her best friends.
Smiling she laughed and nodded, motioning for Elena to follow her as she continued to make her way throughout the cemetery. “Yeah, Angelus, Darla, Spike and Drusilla became well known in the vampire community, though Angelus was the most famous followed by Spike. Angelus was known of course as the Scourge of Europe and Spike was known as William the Bloody. They came upon a clan of gypsies and Angelus decided that it would be amusing to feed off of one of the girls. Unfortunately for him, not for the rest of the world, she was a favorite among her clan. So instead of simply running or fighting back, the gypsies came up with the perfect punishment.” She stated before taking a breath, knowing she had to continue though for some reason as she spoke the story she had Angel’s voice in her head just as he had told it to her.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She was surprised when Buffy gave her so much information rather than just blowing her off. Not that she wasn't grateful for it however it had seemed like she was deliberately trying to keep things to a need to know minimum which really the young woman didn't blame her. She remembered when Jenna had been alive how she and Jeremy had tried to be as honest with Jenna as possible without giving away the whole supernatural world that they had been thrown into. It wasn’t something that was easy to do and she knew that it had to be even more difficult for the other girl since she had been in that world a lot longer than Elena had.
She listened silently in rapt attention as Buffy explained that she someone wouldn't be as strong as a slayer but they could be strong for a human. She remembered Damon and Alaric trying to teach her to fight and she hadn't been able to truly get the hang of it other than a few basic things. She had often wondered if that was because she was a woman and while sure they might have all been around the same height it still wasn’t the same as someone of her own gender teaching her.
"Would you be willing to teach me?" She asked suddenly, having wanted to ask for quite awhile now however she hadn't known the other girl well enough nor had she known if she would even be willing to. However after hearing that she had taught her friends how to fight she had a little bit more hope that she would be willing to teach her. "It's just...Damon tried to teach me and it didn't work out well enough. Partly because I was so easily distracted but his mouth and the other part because it was more of a joking thing to him than anything else." She stated, hoping she would agree to help.
If she could learn how to defend herself that would mean that she was less of a liability to Stefan and that would make his life a whole lot easier. Not that she expected to be able to fight someone like Klaus but at least if she could keep herself safe enough from the everyday issues that she seemed to have at all times it would alleviate some of her boyfriends stress.
Waiting on bated breath she couldn’t help but ask. “What was the perfect punishment?” She asked, though a small part of her wondered if she really was better off not knowing.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She wasn't surprised when Elena asked her if she would train her. She had actually been highly surprised that it had taken her that long to ask. Buffy knew that she was busy a lot these days however she also had a fairly good memory of after having slayer strength when she had lost it around her 18th birthday. She knew what went bump in the night and yet had been completely unable to fight it. She didn't wish that feeling upon anyone, especially someone who had done nothing other than fall in love with a man and fall into the supernatural world.
She knew that she would do what she could for Elena and when the younger girl spoke of trying to be trained by someone else she couldn’t help but smile. “That’s because men and women fight differently.” She stated, remembering fondly a conversation between her and Angel that had been similar. “Women hold themselves differently and as such it’s difficult for a man to teach a woman how to fight…just as it’s difficult for a woman to teach a man how to fight. Only extremely experienced fighters who have observed both sexes fighting would be able to do it.” She stated, her smile never leaving her face. Sure Merrick and then later Giles had trained her, but it had been Angel who had fine tuned it. He was the one who had taught her how to use a sword. He was the one who had sparred with her and not allowed either of them to hold anything back.
It was one of the main reasons that Angelus had never truly tried to fight her…because he didn’t know if he would win. Sure when she had burst in on him trying to end the world he had fought her and when she had used the rocket launcher on the Judge and then ran after him, but he had never truly tried to fight her hand to hand with the desire to kill her. No, because he knew that they were very evenly matched. She was a small bit stronger but he had more knowledge than she did. It was a tossup and had it been a one on one fight to the death it was a complete mystery to see who would have ended up on top.
Shivering at the thought she answered Elena’s question, pushing the memories down to the deepest recesses of her brain. “I’ll help you. And if you want to ask your friends to come with you so they can learn I will help them too.” She stated, knowing that while they may be vampires she doubted they had the fighting experience that she did.
Not at all surprised by the switch of topic she smiled sadly. “They cursed him with his soul. When a vampire is created they lose their soul…which means they don’t care. They gave Angelus his soul back…which meant every murder he had ever committed then started to matter to him. He cared about the lives that he had taken.” She stated sadly, knowing that while Angel saw them as the same person, she knew that his demon and him were two different sides of the man that she loved.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She felt a breath of relief release from her lips when Buffy explained why it was difficult for men to teach women and vice versa. She had been afraid during the process that it had been her own shortcomings that had kept her from learning how to fight with Damon and Alaric and hadn’t even thought about the fact that two men were trying to teach her how to fight. It gave her a sense of relief that she hadn’t realized she had needed about how she could learn how to protect herself in the coming months and longer.
She could tell just by the look on the other woman's face that she had spoken about this before though Elena wondered if she had been in the same position that she was now or if she had been in Elena's position. She didn't find it curious enough to ask but she was interested to know who had fought with her. "You said though that the watcher trains the slayer right? I thought you said that your watcher was a male so how did you learn?" She finally asked, figuring it would give her some insight into how the other girl had been taught.
Her eyes widened at the thought of her friends coming however she remembered that she wasn't the only one who didn't know exactly how to fight and she nodded. "Maybe it can just be us the first couple of times until I get the hang of it and then I'll talk to them. Do you have a guy that could help us since I'm sure they could all use a few refresher courses." She stated though the first part was stated as more of a question than a statement. She didn’t really want to make a fool of herself in front of people that had seen her do that enough these days.
She waited with bated breath and let it out in a huff. "So they basically forced him to turn his humanity back on...at least that's how I'm comparing it. So without a soul he didn't care and with a soul he did. I'm surprised he stayed...alive I guess is the best word for it. I know that Stefan has killed before but from what you've told me Angelus killed a lot more than Stefan...how does he deal with it?" She asked, feeling respect well up in her for the vampire that she had never met.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She smiled and nodded her understanding. “I completely get what you are saying and while I know it’s going to take time I have complete confidence that I can help you. I’ll probably get you on a workout schedule too so that you can offer up strength as well as skills.” She stated, thinking about how she had started training the potential slayers before Willow had activated their slayer strength. “If you’re okay with that of course.” She stated belatedly, remembering that she was not in charge of the brunette and she needed to keep herself under control. She waited for a response and sighed in relief when the young girl agreed.
She sighed as she answered the young woman’s question. “He helps people which helps with his guilt though in no way does it ease it. There have been more than a few times that he’s thought about letting go and stopping even attempting. We had a big evil back several years ago that tried to play on his guilt and get him to commit suicide and they almost succeeded. If it hadn’t had been for a snow storm which effectively blocked the sun he would have gone up in flames and none of the good that he had done in the past few years would have ever happened.” She stated, remembering standing on the hill near the mansion begging him not to do what he was planning on doing. She remembered telling him she wouldn’t watch or mourn him (which was total lies in every way shape or form) and the snow starting, blocking the sun.
Looking down at her phone she winced at the time. She really needed to get home and get to work on a few things for her students that she had to do. Preparing report cards was honestly her least favorite thing to do when it came to counseling and working at the high school in Richmond. She loved being able to help people but she didn’t like being in charge of entering grades in. It was boring and it took up too much of her free time. Also she really didn’t want to be in charge of any of the girls’ grades which seemed to happen quite a bit.
“Alright, I need to get going.” She told her, leading the way back to the Falls where they had both parked. Once she had gotten Elena to her car she smiled. “Call me tomorrow and we’ll set up a time for you to come to the house and we’ll start working on your skills. Okay?” She asked before waiting until she pulled away to get in her car and head back to the boarding house.
