It had been an overwhelming day for Mrs. Amelia Bradley…director of the Richmond Group Home in Richmond Virginia. She had always prided herself on being someone that did not tolerate nonsense however today had pushed her over the edge. She had no idea how a young boy had gone missing however one of her recent additions to the home had not come back from school and no one could figure out where he had gone. She didn’t want to even think about what the state would do once they learned that her association had lost a child which was one of the reasons that she had not alerted anyone to the fact yet.
She had to send the front desk receptionist, Samantha Thompson, home because she had been hysterical. Amelia could understand why the young woman had been so afraid since technically it was her responsibility to make sure that no child left or came in without her knowledge, however it had been on his way home from school that young Alexzander had gone missing and as such they weren’t legally liable as far as she knew. She had tried to reassure the young woman however she ended up having to be sent home due to not being able to calm down enough to be of much help.
Amelia had pulled all of her normal workers away from their other jobs all but two in order to keep the children occupied and had them out scouring the town for the young boy. She agreed to man the phones and the desk since she didn’t know what the child looked like and would be of little help in locating him. Luckily it had been a slow day other than a young man coming in to check to see if his sister had been brought in.
Unfortunately she had spoken too soon as before she could lock the door for the day a young woman, probably around twenty five if not younger, walked in looking nervous. She smiled in what she hoped was a welcoming way and stood up, leaning over and offering her hand. “Hello there, I’m Amelia Bradley, the director of Richmond Group Home. How can I help you today?” She asked, faking the smile as much as she felt she could. She loved her job but she had never been a people person per say, preferring to work behind the stage if possible in order to get things accomplished.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -It had been a long day for Liz Parker…otherwise known as Claudia Smith to anyone who didn’t truly know her. She had gone by the name for the past year and she realized with frustration that it would only be another year or so before she had to move again, changing her name and attempting to find another teaching job. Granted it had only been a few months since she started at Mystic Falls High School but she knew better than anyone that the longer she stayed in one place and the longer she used the same alias the easier it would be trace her.
After her meeting with the principal about this year’s science fair she had gone home and changed in order to meet a couple friends from work for dinner. She knew that realistically she shouldn’t be making any friends but it had been a lonely few years and she felt as if she deserved a few nights of happiness before she went off by herself once more. Granted it was much easier with Maria and Kyle, not to mention Zan, all in the same city but she couldn’t count on that lasting. She knew if something happened and they were found out they would all have to run again and so that led her to trying to keep her distance.
Granted she doubted it would work for long but she was trying anyway.
Speaking of Zan, she had thought during her free period about how to go about making sure that the young boy was safe from not only enemy aliens who would love to get their hands on the technical ‘heir of Antar’ but also the FBI, and she had come up with a plan that she knew hinged solely on her ability to lie but it was something that she had to do.
So here she was, walking through the doors of the Richmond Group Home and being met by a woman that was not familiar. She had met the other woman, Samantha, once before however this woman was new to her and that did not help her confidence here. Introducing herself as the director, Amelia Bradley, gave the young woman another quiver of fear within her. She knew she had to keep it together but that didn’t stop her from being nervous as all hell. Luckily she did well under pressure.
“I’m Claudia Smith, a teacher at Mystic Falls High School.” She introduced herself, putting on her ‘teacher persona’ and using it as a shield around her. “I came here about a week ago with a class of mine and I met a young boy who I’m actually interested in fostering. I am licensed as a foster parent and I noticed that he was a little bit shy and I felt like him and I would be a good fit.” She told her, remembering the lie she had come up with and pulling out the paperwork that she had forged that stated she was a licensed foster parent.

Amelia smiled at the nervous young woman, though inside she felt herself puff up, trying to look more presentable. She had always been a fairly materialistic person even though she worked with children who didn’t have much. She liked to look good and as such it made her feel good. Amelia again was not a people person so much though she did enjoy feeling superior to others. For some reason this part of personality turned off around children though. Children were the only thing that could truly make her act like a better person and as such it was one of the reasons that she was the director of the children’s home.
She shook hands with the young woman before allowing her to speak, her eyes shining as she learned why the young teacher was there. She may love children however she loved even more when they were taken into good homes. Teachers always made things easier for her and everyone else working in the group home as they were always highly recommended and they already knew how to handle children which made it to where there was no parenting class that she had to force upon teachers to take before fostering a child.
She took the paperwork from the young woman and looked it over, noting the Virginia state seal and the judge's signature that she had seen on only a few other foster parent authorizations. This wasn't because the judge was not well known, it was because not many people had the heart to foster children knowing that they could easily get adopted and taken away. She was surprised to note that the name on the authorization was only Ms. Claudia Smith…not Mr. Husband Smith and Mrs. Claudia Smith. Normally courts only appointed married couples as foster parents. Then again this young woman was a teacher and more than likely had a fair bit of money if the courts had allowed it.
“Well everything looks good on this end. You said that you wanted to foster a specific child?” She asked, this coming as a bit of a shock to Amelia. Normally when foster parents came into the home saying that they were interested in fostering a child or children they either said that they didn’t care who they fostered or at most they had a specific gender in mind. She had never had someone specifically request a child. “Who is the young man that you were interested in fostering?” She asked curiously, a small pit of dread developing in the bottom of her stomach though she couldn’t understand why.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She could tell that the older woman was sizing her up and at one time this would have made the young scientist very uncomfortable however after dealing with teenagers for the past year and a half every single day (yes, even during summer time since she taught summer school for extra money and for something to do since she no longer had any semblance of a life really) she had gotten used to the gazes that teachers often got from their students…especially their male students if the teacher was a female…female students if the teacher was a male. It was something that all the teachers knew and while the newer ones tended to get a little annoyed by it, the normal ones simply found it amusing at this point.
She had at first not been that receptive to the idea simply because she knew how hard people were cracking down on teacher student inappropriateness so when two of her seniors had given her their numbers she had gone straight to the principal with them. Luckily her boss found it funny and told her that the next time it happened to check in with the other teachers as they had a tally throughout the year on whose number got passed around the most. At one time she would have found this appalling but now she simply found it amusing. It also gave her the confidence she needed to deal with people like Mrs. Amelia Bradley who she could tell wanted to seem more impressive and more intimidating than she herself was. Really, how hard was that? She was under 5’5 and weighed hardly nothing. Most of her students were bigger than her!
She watched as the older woman took the forms in her hand and she prayed to anyone who would listen that the forms would pass as authentic. Liz had done everything she could do with her limited hacking skills learned from Alex and then broadened over the past five years due to necessity and while she knew she had done everything correctly she still had a tiny flicker of fear that she would be found out and thrown in jail. Jail meant finger prints and long term jail cells meant medical care which meant that her secret could easily be found. It was not something she even wanted to try and entertain the idea of and instead of dwelling on it she focused on the woman in front of her.
She nodded when the woman asked her if she wanted to foster a specific child. “Yes, I met him while I was here helping out a class and we sort of clicked. He reminds me a lot of me as a kid, sort of a loner and shy and I figured he’d be better off in a more personal setting than the larger group.” She stated, having practiced several questions such as this so that she knew what she needed to say to make things go as smoothly as possible. Her next question didn’t surprise her either and she smiled, her smile fond at the thought of the young boy. “Alexzander Hughes.” She stated, having remembered that while his given name was Zan Evans, his adopted name was Alexzander Hughes. Unfortuantely this seemed to be the wrong thing to say as the woman’s smile dropped. “Is there a problem?” She asked, dreading the answer.

Her heart stopped at the fond look that the woman gave when speaking the young boy’s name. This could not be happening! Why of all days did this woman show up to take this boy? A boy that really as far as she knew hadn’t made any friends and had no family because he had been adopted in the first place and then given back after his foster father had been killed in the war and his foster mother had been sent to a psychiatric facility due to losing her mind when her husband died. No one had any idea where his birth parents were and most of them had considered the boy a resident of the state more than likely until the day he turned 18.
So why of all days did this have to happen? After the young boy had mysteriously vanished. And why was it this boy that this young teacher wanted to foster? She remembered quickly what she said and groaned. Of course, a shy young child and a shy young woman would be the perfect companions and she was right that he probably would flourish better under one on one care rather than in a big group setting, but how could she tell her that he was gone? Maybe she could lie? Yes, that was what she would do. Not that she made a habit of lying since she was in charge of the facility however she didn’t want it leaking out to the public just yet that a six year old boy had gone missing from their facility.
“Wow, already have a young child picked out huh? That’s not usually the way that we do things here Ms. Smith.” She stated, emphasizing the ms. part in an effort to intimidate the young woman though it was obvious from the unimpressed look that it wasn’t working. “We usually have you meet with a couple children to see how you get along with them and then we speak about it.” She stated before realizing it wasn’t going as well as she had hoped and instead tried a different tactic.
“Unfortunately Alexzander Hughes was adopted yesterday.” She stated firmly and knew that if it came down to it she could not come up with even the barest of lies to continue on with this façade but she prayed she would accept her at her word and not ask for any proof.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She knew just from the way that the woman’s eyes tightened and a look of dread had entered them that something was seriously wrong. What could have happened in four days that would cause something to go wrong. Had someone figured out that Zan wasn’t fully human? Had he gotten hurt and someone witnessed it before he could heal himself? Had they taken him to the hospital and run blood tests? Had the FBI already taken him? Her heart raced though she kept her face calm, trying not to have a full blown panic attack right in the middle of this unknown woman.
What if the FBI had him? What would she do? No, she didn’t even need to bother answering that because she knew damn well what she would do. She would call Maria and Kyle and have them meet her where she would tell them everything and then ask them if they wanted to help. She would understand completely if they didn’t because going into the FBI (wherever they were, she still hadn’t hacked into their database and found where their Virginia location was. She wasn’t naïve enough to think that they didn’t have one) was dangerous for all of them.
Oh god, what if it was something else. What if Kivar had come and claimed to be Zan’s biological father? What if he had taken him back to Antar already…or worse…had killed him before Zan could even begin to call out to someone. Then again, she hadn’t been here so who would he call out to? NO! She could not continue to let these thoughts enter her mind. She had to stay calm and either figure out what had happened and then go freak the hell out once she left and then find him, or…well…there was really no other option.
She could see the other woman trying to come up with a lie and this frightened her even more but she refused to let it show. She kept quiet, staring her down, using her patented ‘disappointed teacher look’ that got more people to confess why they hadn’t gotten something done. Hearing that he had been adopted made absolutely no sense and while her stomach felt as if it had dropped out from underneath her she kept it together, knowing without a doubt that there was no way that he had been adopted in four days when there had been no potentials when she had seen him. “Excuse me?” She asked, not at all amused. “And how is that possible since when I saw him four days ago he hadn’t even met with anyone who was interested in adopting him. How about the truth?” She asked, much more bluntly than normal but she was afraid and wanted that kid now.

This was not at all going over well in the older woman’s mind. It was clear that this was not a normal young woman who would just take the knowledge of an older woman and go and deal with it. No, this was a woman who knew the system which should have been clear to Amelia being that not only was she a high school teacher but she was also already approved for guardianship of a young child. This was not at all good and she knew that if she didn’t do some fast thinking she would be up shits creek without a paddle to put it rather crudely.
She could see the panic in the young woman’s eyes and this alerted her to something not being entirely right. She had never seen an adult panic at the thought of not getting a foster child…especially one who had a job and didn’t need the money that the state provided people for fostering orphaned children. She had seen it on the faces of people who had no job and used the children they fostered to keep themselves out of debt but this was clearly not the case with this particular woman.
The question that the younger woman asked sent Amelia into a tailspin and she truly had no idea how to answer it. She couldn’t very well call the other woman a liar because she was telling the truth. There had been no one interested in adopting him which didn’t surprise anyone as most people who looked to adopt a child wanted infants or at least under a certain age as they wanted to be the only parents they remembered. Amelia could understand that but it didn’t make it any easier on the number of children they had at all times with no prospects.
However what was she to say. Unfortunately at this point there was nothing that could be said other than the truth. “Unfortunately you are correct ma’am and please forgive me for lying, it was a reflex. Unfortunately Alexzander never came back from school today…we are currently trying to find his whereabouts.” She stated, her eyes focused on the top of the brunette’s head rather than her eyes, not wanting to see the horror she knew she would find there. Or at least she assumed she would.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She could feel herself panicking though she desperately tried to hide it. She knew she couldn’t afford to lose it now as she had to figure out what had happened to the child that she had come to feel fiercely protective of. She knew that a lot of it had to do with Max but the other part had to do with her and the type of person she was. She knew had it been any child she would have gone into mama bear mode but it was even worse because it was this child, a child that she had at one time wished had never been and now she couldn’t imagine a world where he wasn’t.
She shifted her weight from one leg to the other, tying to not appear as if she was as nervous as she appeared to be. It was clear to her that the woman in front of her was trying to figure out an excuse and she wouldn't bend or break, she wanted to know what the hell was going on and where in god’s name this child was! She thanked the ability to keep a straight face and praised her teaching classes she had taken though she knew it wouldn’t take long for her to have a complete melt down if this woman didn’t start talking and quickly!
Her emerald green heel made a noise on the linoleum floor as she moved again, though this time it was because she had to fight to keep her balance when the woman finally admitted that they had no idea where Zan was. How in the fuck do you LOSE A CHILD?! Was no one in this place responsible?! Jesus! She couldn't even imagine what would have happened had someone not been concerned for him...would they have bothered looking at all?
She shot the woman a glare that would have made a lesser woman or man for that matter cringe. Liz was no longer the passive person she had been at one time...her ability to stand up for herself and others had grown thanks to her involvement with the pod squad over the years and it had gotten even more defined in her years alone. "I suggest you okay the paperwork to have Alexzander put into my custody and then I suggest you call your superior or whoever it is that you answer to and inform them that a child was lost on YOUR WATCH." She barked, not even recognizing her own voice.
Turning on her heel she stormed towards the door before turning around again, shooting the woman another glare. “If he is found before I find him, you are to call me. My information is there. If I find him first I will not be bringing him back here.” She sneered before marching out the door and letting it slam behind her…
Feeling the panic welling up in her as she did. She knew it was time…she needed help.
