Being in Richmond was exhausting for Kyle the last few weeks. He had to participate in all his new teams activities. On top of that, he had to find a place to stay so he was apartment hunting as well, and had very little time to relax. So when he heard about this BBQ he decided to show up to Mystic Falls for it. He had nothing better to do and well he needed some fun in his life. So he drove down to Mystic Falls and stepped out of his car. His 2008 Honda Civic DX. At least it wasn't all bad being traded, his new team got this car for him.
People were already beginning to show up and Kyle instantly felt out of place. He didn't know anyone there. This was kind of like Roswell, everyone knew everyone as it was such a small community. So not knowing anyone when everyone else knew everyone was kind of a bad feeling. Kyle considered getting back into his car and driving away, but he was here anyways so Kyle figured he might as well give it a shot, who knows, maybe he will meet someone who can be a good friend, or better yet a girlfriend. He wouldn't admit it out loud, but he was quite lonely.
He walked to the park. There was swimming and other fun activities at the beach, and he heard of a huge bonfire later when the sun went down, but for now he decided to check the park. That was where he heard the food was gonna be, not that he didn't just come for the food, but still. Kyle wondered if he would ever be able to meet a girl that would be a good match for him. His Buddha teachings taught him to be patient in such things, but after 7 years since Liz Parker chose Max Evans over him, he was kinda losing patience.
It was difficult to get a girlfriend for him cause well, he was different. So before he could even let a girl into his life, he needed to let them know what he was. A lot of people didn't take the whole "I have super powers and may be considered part alien." thing really well. So Kyle decided to avoid trying to get a girlfriend, as he had to protect himself. But after that long, after 7 years, you kind of get lonely. Kyle shrugged, he guessed some people were destined to be alone forever. Just like some people, like Max and Liz, were destined to be together forever.
Kyle began talking to people, not really finding anyone that interesting, a few of them seemed to think it was cool that he played baseball for a living. So far Kyle was 0 for 2 with the ladies. One of them had a boyfriend, and if Kyle wasn't an alien, or whatever he was, then he would of been intimidated by the 6'4" husky guy. The 2nd girl was a lesbian. He had such great luck today didn't he. He approached another girl from behind. "Hey, I'm James." Kyle said to her, seeing her face as she turned around, shocking him. "LIZ?" Kyle said, yep, worst luck EVER!!!!

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She was more than grateful that today was a Saturday as she didn’t think that she would be able to handle going into the high school today and attempting to teach. When her alarm had gone off this morning (because she had forgotten to turn it off as she didn’t need to get up at any certain time) she had ended up blasting the damn thing because she hadn’t felt like getting up and turning it off. Yes, she had gotten to the point where if she had to be up at a certain time she had to set her alarm somewhere that was not right next to her bed as it forced her to get up.
Luckily for her she had realized what she had done right after she did it so she forced herself to get up, take a shower and get dressed and then head to Target to get a new alarm clock as she knew she would have not done it and then would have ended up being late on Monday had she not gone and done it as soon as she had blasted the damn thing. With the amount of thoughts running through her brain constantly things tended to get overlooked and buying a new alarm clock would have gotten overlooked quicker than most things.
After she had bought the alarm clock she had run home, putting away the alarm clock and the other things that she had bought from Target before changing once again, though this time she changed into something a bit more casual. There was a town barbeque at Richmond Beach and anyone from Richmond and Mystic Falls was invited. She knew that Maria was planning on stopping by (or at least that’s what she had told her a few days ago) and she hoped that she could get the lay of the land so to speak and also see who all was around. She knew that it would be difficult to scope out those in the town with so many people around but it would also help to stay under the radar so the speak. She knew how small towns worked…everyone knew everyone and that went double for if you were new in town. However since Richmond and Mystic Falls were having the party together she hoped that there would be enough new faces to not draw attention to her.
She quickly put on her red striped tankini and then slid on a casual dress that doubled as a cover up that she had bought from Victoria Secret a few months back. Throwing on a pair of flip flops she headed out the door, not stopping until she was at the beach. She looked around briefly but since there were so few people on the beach at the moment she didn't want to go make her way over just yet. Instead she parked closer to the park and went over to grab a drink, not paying any attention to what she was doing until she heard someone introduce themselves. She looked up and her eyes widened, before she could say anything she heard Kyle scream her name and she smacked her forehead before schooling her features into a more neutral expression. “I’m sorry, you must have me confused with someone else.” She told him, her face blank but her eyes daring him to contradict her. “My name’s Claudia, Claudia Smith. You said your name was James?” She asked, her pulse racing at the thought that someone could have overheard him.

Kyle really couldn't believe his luck. He just had to run into the very girl that broke up with him, that chose Max Evans over him and left him high and dry. Yeah he tried to date, but it was never the same, not after what happened with Liz and the other aliens forever changed his life. But here she was standing right in front of him. "I can't believe it is you." He said, but she cut him off, correcting him on who she was.
At first Kyle was slightly confused at Liz for correcting him. She was Liz Parker, the girl who he dated for a few months, the girl Max Evans saved and wanted to marry. Kyle would know her anywhere, and it was unmistakable, she was Elizabeth "Liz" Parker. But his confusion soon wore off when he got the gist of it finally. "Oh, right..." Kyle said more to himself. Liz had to change her name to, in order to protect herself. Now Kyle went and blew her secret to anyone who cared enough to listen, though he looked around and no one seemed to pay attention.
It helped that there were less people about that Kyle was expecting at this moment, and if anyone did overhear them, then they would just think it was a case of mistaken identity. Kyle nodded. "Sorry, My mistake Miss Smith, what say you and I go someplace more private to get to know each other better." Kyle said to her, making his voice sound like he was flirting with her. He raised an eyebrow to show her that he was just playing around and that he wasn't really flirting with her, he knew those days were long over by now, but he needed a good reason to get her alone.
Kyle led her to a secluded area and turned to look at her. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you were... undercover." He whispered to Liz when he was sure that they were out of listening distance from anyone else. At least he didn't say her last name, so her cover wasn't fully blown just yet. Kyle looked around to make sure no one was listening to them or watching them. "What are you doing here?" He asked her trying to sound casual but at the same time giving her some urgency in hos voice. It really was weird just running into her like this and Kyle was a little freaked.
He wanted to tell her what happened to him, that his powers came in too, but he knew that it was not a good subject to be talking about in public like this. "Surely you could of come up with a better last name then Smith? Haven't you seen any spy movies? They always use Smith as the alias." Kyle told her with a smile, trying to lighten the mood after the disaster that was him nearly blowing her entire cover. Part of him couldn't help but feel so happy that he finally found someone else, even if that someone else was Liz Parker the girl that broke his heart.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She groaned, realizing that he didn't realize what she meant at first. They really should have spoken before separating about what names they would use but she knew why none of them had. For one thing none of them really knew what the hell they were doing. For all they had snuck around in Roswell during high school the closest they had ever come to using different names was when they all went to Las Vegas and had gotten fake I.Ds. This was a whole different ballgame so to speak and she knew that while it was probably smart for none of the others to know who they were pretending to be, it didn’t make situations like this any less awkward.
She shot Kyle a look that she was sure he knew well. When they had broken up they had a falling out however upon Max Evans saving his life the two became close again, and at one time she had considered him her closest male friend. She still felt that way even though they hadn’t seen each other in five years…however with the territory of best friends that meant that he should know her ‘shut up and play along’ look and thankfully it seemed as if he still knew her as well as he once did as he seemed to grasp what she was trying to say. “Quite alright, I understand…I have a common looking face as several people have told me in the past.” She stated, her eyes looking behind Kyle to make sure that no one was paying attention to them. Luckily for both of them it didn’t seem as if anyone really cared. Another great thing about large crowds, it was easier to get lost in them which meant it was easier to hide. After all, wasn’t that what the pod squad had done in Roswell…hide in plain sight?
It took everything in her not to roll her eyes however she played her part well (she had become a much better actress over the years) and slid her arm through his. "I'd be delighted too...James was it?" She asked, letting him lead her towards the trail that luckily for them no one seemed to be on. It was funny to her since right after she and Maria had reconnected they had come here to have a private conversation as well. She should really just start bringing people to her apartment, less hassle that way.
She waited until he had faced her before smiling. "It's okay...if I would have seen you first I would have probably said your name too." She told him, leaning in and giving him a hug though she knew he hadn't expected it. She couldn't help it. He was another part of home and she really missed home right now. "I got a teaching job here...I work at Mystic Falls High School and I figured I would come to this crazy big thing that everyone was talking about. Nothing else to do." She stated casually. "What about you?" She asked before smacking his arm lightly. “And shut up, if you must know Smith was actually the best name out there since do you know how many ‘Ms. Smith’s’ there are at the high school I teach at alone? It works out well as if I would have used a peculiar last name they would have had to actually check into it. Smith and Johnson…common last names…they blend in better.” She stated with a smile.

"Yeah." Kyle said to her, he knew that Liz probably knew where that name came from, James. James really missed his dad and wondered where he was and what he was doing right now, but he couldn't think about it as it just scared him. Having Liz close to him again felt good, it reminded him that he wasn't alone in this world like he thought he was. She was really his best friend and if not for her, he probably would of freaked out when she got powers and he knew he was gonna get them too, but her calmness with the situation, at least she acted calm for the most part, helped him.
Kyle couldn't believe it when she pulled him in for a hug. He hugged her back, part of him was glad that she at least remembered him and the fact that they were once close. Kyle still gets a chuckle when he thinks of Liz'es odd request to "sleep" together so when Max caught them he would get jealous and not want to be with Liz anymore. It was such an odd thing to ask him to do, but he agreed to it cause it was for Liz. "That's cool Liz. I didn't know you liked teaching." Kyle replied to her with a grin. She then asked him what he was doing here.
"I play baseball for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. I needed to get away from apartment shopping and have some fun." Kyle told her. "You are looking at the star third baseman of the San Francisco Giants Minor League Organization, James Kendrick." Kyle said giving a slight bow. Though star was kind of an overstatement. He really was just a prospect at best. Maybe it was a bad idea to use his fathers first name and his grandfathers first name, but it was such a common name, like Smith, as Liz pointed out a few moments later. So he knew that she wouldn't scold him for it.
"I guess that's true." Kyle said, he guessed that is why all the spy movies used that last name for, cause it was common and easily passable. But sometimes it back fired on them and the bad guys figured it out because it was so common. But that didn't always happen. "I'm just glad you can call yourself anything right now... I was so worried about you." Kyle told her, with a frown. Anything could of happened to her or any of their friends and he would of never known about it. But here she was alive and well and she looked happy.
"You hear from anyone else?" Kyle asked her wondering. He worried about everyone equally. Michael, Max, Maria, Isabel, the whole group. They allowed him to come with them even though he was kind of the odd man out, and didn't really have a reason to be with them. Michael was with Maria, Max was with Liz and Isabel was an alien like the others, Kyle was just a guy who may or may not get powers. Michael even said "do we have to count him as our kind?". Right in front of him, Kyle didn't mind, that was just the way Michael is, was.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She was sure that she and Kyle were two of the only ones who truly knew what it was like to miss their parents more and more each day. Sure Maria knew however she and her mother had drifted apart from one another over the years after her father left. The two were still close but it was more of a friendship than a mother daughter relationship. Isabel and Max had always in some way known that the day would come when they would have to leave their parents and as such they had never really fully relaxed with them. Well, maybe Isabel had but Max had always kept up a wall. Also their parents knew what they were now and knew that they would get in touch with them would they could. Liz doubted that either of the Evans would have ever thought it would be five plus years before hearing from their children but for all she knew they had been in regular contact.
Michael had never truly had a parent and as such was one of the more independent in the group. He had known from day one not to make ties and really the only ties he made with the exception of Isabel and Max, who he had deemed safe since they were just like him, was to Maria and that definitely was not intentional. Liz had always been closer to her father than to her mother. She had never really understood why however she had always been a daddy’s girl. Sure when she and Max had gotten back together there had been a lot of tension but thanks to Sheriff Valenti, Jim as she reminded herself, he had come to realize that Max wasn’t the horrible man he thought him to be and had given him a chance, thus allowing Liz and Jeff Parker to repair their relationship.
Kyle she felt though had the worst of them all. She had accepted long ago that being in love with Max Evans would mean sacrifice on her part. Kyle on the other hand never wanted to be a part of the madness and had unfortunately gotten sucked in only because he had wanted to protect his father. She doubted he had ever expected to have to leave him and if Liz was being honest she knew that she had never expected to have to leave the surrogate father figure that the entire group had found in Jim Valenti behind either.
She didn’t want to think about it any longer and instead focused back on her friend standing in front of her. “Trust me, teaching is not my number one love but it’s something to do, its money and at least I am somewhat doing what I wanted to do in biology at least.” She stated, feeling a pang of longing for her once set upon dreams of being the head of microbiology at Harvard. She wished more than anything that her dreams were still feasible but she knew better than anything that they weren’t and she had accepted that.
Her eyes widened in astonishment when Kyle stated that he was playing ball and she shook her head. “Nice, you always did want to go into sports.” She told him before nodding, both at his worry and at his question. “I’m okay, I’ve learned to adapt. As for hearing from anyone else, Maria is actually in town so we may meet up with her sometime today. Not sure what she’s been doing but we happened to run into each other, literally, and yeah.” She stated, briefly wondering if she should tell him about Zan but deciding not to if only for the moment. She didn’t want him to worry anymore than he apparently already did.

Everyone seemingly had people they missed the most. For Max, he missed Liz the most, and the same could be said the other way as well. For Maria, she missed Michael the most and he missed her the most as well. Isabel missed Jesse, her husband, ex-husband, whatever you want to call him, the most. Kyle missed his father the most, and the problem was, everyone thought that they were gonna be able to see the one they missed the most again, except for maybe Isabel, for all they knew Jesse moved on and has a normal life now.
For Kyle, he knew he would never see his dad again. At least that's how he felt. His dad stayed behind in Roswell, and Kyle had to let him go. Since Kyle can never return to Roswell, as it would probably be really bad. For all he knew James Valenti, his father, had a tail on him 24/7 or something just waiting for Kyle or any of them for that matter to return. So he would be putting Jim in harms way just by visiting him. It sucked sure, but at the end of the day it was best, cause they thought James Valenti was a normal guy, and he was gonna be fine.
Kyle always wondered something though. Since Max healed him and Liz and they got powers, did James Valenti get them too? Maybe it ok works on people around the same age as Max, and if he heals someone to young or to old then they don't get powers. He also heard the tale of what happened on christmas one year, Max healing a bunch of kids of Cancer. "That's all that matters, that it puts hot sauce on the table." Kyle said with a grin, sure he wished she got her dreams to come true too, but they sort of flew out the window when Max Evans came into her life.
Basically, her dreams did come true, she got the man of her dreams to fall in love with her. Kyle could only be so lucky to get the girl of his dreams, but it wasn't happening any time soon, if at all. "Didn't you want to go to Harvard?" Kyle asked her, not wanting to upset her. "Maybe it happened for a reason? Maybe its a good thing?" Kyle asked Liz hoping to cheer her up a bit. Kyle had dreams, but for some reason aliens and everything that happened didn't get to him as much as others, Maria wanted to be a singer. Kyle just didn't really have anyone after him.
Well, he was sure they were after him like they were the others, but they thought, thanks to being the biological son of the sheriff of Roswell New Mexico, that he was just a normal human, and even if they did catch him he would be no use to them. Which is why Kyle had to be careful who he told about his powers, which in this case he told no one. How he faked the blood tests to pass his physicals was a well guarded secret. He smiled at her. "I'm being careful, if your worried. No one knows who I really am, and I fake the tests." He told her.
Kyle didn't want Liz to worry about the fact that he was playing baseball, even if they figure out what he was, they could only get to him, Kyle wouldn't let them get to Liz or anyone else. "Maria, wow, I can't wait to catch up with her." Kyle said honestly, he couldn't wait to catch up with all of them to be truthful. He wondered where the rest of them were and how they were, but at least Maria and Liz were safe. "Liz... I... I got them too." Kyle told her, she was probably gonna ask why he had to fake the tests anyways, so she had to know.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She quirked an eyebrow at the comment about putting hot sauce on the table. She had often wondered when the group had split ways if Kyle had come into any powers as she had. She knew that she and Kyle’s healings were different as from what Max had described the situations were different. She knew that when Max had healed her he had received in-depth flashes just like he always had where as with Kyle she didn’t remember him describing flashes as he had gotten with her. Maybe he just hadn’t mentioned it but she did often find it odd that their connection was different than those of the others he had healed.
She smiled a sad smile and nodded. "I did want to go to Harvard, though I do give my father some of the credit for that particular bed and that's because he put a poster of Cambridge above my bed when I was five and constantly talked about me going to the best school in the country and you know how the whole nine yards. However yeah, I wanted to. But when I first found out about..." She trailed off, not mentioning what she was meaning but she knew Kyle well enough to know he would understand. She knew he would know she was speaking about when she had fallen in love with Max after he saved her and when everyone’s lives had been thrown into the alien chaos as Maria so aptly nicknamed it. “I knew that my dreams changed. I no longer had to get out of town” She of course didn’t say the name of the town, though it was clear she meant Roswell “…at least I didn’t have to go that far away. Really my dreams consisted of making sure that those I loved were safe.” She continued, remembering a similar conversation with Maria.
“Ria and I actually had a similar conversation before we left.” She continued absently. “I remember telling her that I was committed to going down that road with…” She trailed off here, not saying Max’s name but the way she said it made it easy enough to decipher whom she was speaking about. “Good, bad or indifferent I was committed.” She finished with a fond smile and a shake of her brown locks. “It didn’t matter where I went anymore though thinking back on it I probably should have thought more about it before the last few months of school.” She laughed, her smile still sad though resigned as well.
Another off the hand comment about possible powers, though no one would have gotten it had they not been looking. He faked the tests? The only reason he would have to do that (since they didn't run DNA tests as far as he knew) was if he knew his blood was come up with abnormalities in it...which meant that there was something else that he wasn’t telling her. She didn’t blame him in the slightest yet she so desperately wanted to ask him.
Call it the scientist in her.
Before she had to though he told her and she nodded, not at all surprised. "I often wondered." She told him. "Are you okay? Did you have any...reactions like I did?" She asked, of course speaking about how any time she had been upset or around Max for that matter how her energy had spiked. Even now her energy spiked when she got upset though she refrained from talking about that particular side effect.

"That sucks, but in the end, you didn't lose your dream, your dream just changed." Kyle pointed out. Liz basically traded one dream, going to Harvard and doing her scientific thing, for another dream, and that dream was Maxwell "Max" Evans. Liz fell in love with the alien or human or half human, whatever they are called. "I probably would of been the same way. If my dad put a poster above my bed telling me to go to USC I would of gone to Cal." Kyle told her with a smile. He listened to her reason and it was what he expected.
She didn't give up her dreams, she just swapped them out for different ones. Kyle didn't know if he could give up his dreams of being a major league baseball player if it meant being with his one true love. Right now it would be the most difficult decision of his life. But at the end of the day, when it was all said and done, if Kyle had to choose between love and baseball, there was really no contest, he would choose love each and every time. But Kyle didn't see this scenario playing out, at least not in the near future, maybe someday.
Kyle wasn't as upset at Liz picking Max over him anymore, it was in the past and it happened. Still, to hear her talking about Max, even though she wouldn't say his name, and basically confirm what Kyle knew long ago, and that was that Liz would do anything for Max. It didn't upset him that she cared about Max, what kind of upset him was the fact that Liz, or any girl for that matter, would never talk of him like that. He just nodded at his words, a small smile coming on his lips that was meant to signify that he already sort of knew that already.
Kyle actually missed those days. They could be themselves back then. James Kendrick and Claudia Smith did not exist and they were free. Michael, Maria, Max, Liz, Isabel and even Alex, those were the good old days, the days Kyle wanted to get back desperately, but knew it was almost impossible. When the topic changed to Kyle's powers, he nodded silently at her question. He had lots of reactions, especially when he thought about anything non-happy. Like his non-existent love live, his baseball career, which at time seemed like a pipe dream, and the fact that he was all alone and didn't know where his friends or father were.
If it wasn't for his religion, he probably would of destroyed the house he hid out in the first few weeks. It kept him calm and kept his mind off of the bad stuff going on. "Lots, still do. I haven't gotten control of it yet." Kyle told her truthfully, she had Michael and Isabel and Max to help her, Kyle had no one. He sighed, taking a seat on the bench and hoping she would sit down next to him, Kyle looked at her with a shy smile, remembering something from the past that he didn't know he remembered. "I missed you, all of you." Kyle told her honestly.
"You know, I still don't know what my special power is." Kyle added with a laugh, he barely had control of his normal powers that all the aliens had, he doubted he would ever grasp his special ability. "How are you doing with everything?" Kyle asked her with a look. A look that he only gives her and she knows the one, the serious look he gets when he wants an honest truthful answer out of her.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She smiled sadly and shrugged, knowing that really while yes, her dream changed...she had still lost it in the end. She fiddled with the engagement rings around her neck before dropping her hand, not even noticing she had done it until after she had dropped her hand. She spent more than a few nights thinking about where she would be if she hadn't fallen in love with Max Evans however she knew that the answer to that was simple...she would be dead. Max Evans had saved her and because of that she had fallen in love with him, though if she were honest she knew that she had been half way there before she had even really spoken to him much. He had always been a mystery and if there was one thing that everyone knew about Liz Parker…it was that she couldn’t help but getting involved when a mystery presented itself.
She knew that realistically she should be careful but she couldn't help it. She leaned in and gave the boy that had been her first real boyfriend a hug, her arms wrapping around him as she settled into his chest and sighed contently. She may not love Kyle like she did Max, but that didn't mean that she didn't see him as one of her best friends. She always had. She remembered with a fond smile, though no one could see it as her head was buried in his chest, when he had followed her to Marathon Texas, or at least part of the way there, and burst into the hotel room. Had it been for any other reason she knew she would have found it charming yet she was even then trying to protect Max and as such hadn’t been kind to the boy at all. She briefly wondered if she had ever apologized for that.
She leaned back briefly and opened her mouth to do just that however her cell phone blared from the pocket of her swim suit cover up and she jumped before rolling her eyes at herself and picking it up. It was a message from Maria who had called pretending to be her earlier and had gotten no response about Zan…apparently he wasn’t listed as a child under the group home’s car any longer. Panic set in before she could even think about it and she looked up at Kyle, trying to hide the terror in her eyes. “Kyle, I have to go.” She stated, not even realizing that she had used his real name and not James. She never slipped up with something such as this and as such it should have showed anyone around how truly afraid she was.
“Something came up and I have to go.” She told him before taking his phone out of his hand and punching in her number and saving it. “Call me sometime and we will catch up. I promise.” She stated before she picking up her bag and ran as quickly as possible, allowing herself to get lost in the crowd so that Kyle had no chance of following her.
