- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -It had been two days since she had learned of her new fate from the oracles. She hadn't talked to anyone with the exception of Faith simply because she didn't know what to say. Both Xander and Willow had tried to corner her to get answers on what happened but she had studiously avoided their questions by telling them that they would talk later. Angel had offered to talk if she needed him but she had simply smiled and said thanks. She didn't know what to say to any of them at the moment though she knew that Faith was bouncing on her heels to showcase their new knowledge.
She had gone on patrol by herself, coming home when she could barely keep her eyes open. Sliding out of her day clothing she slipped on a plain black tank top and a pair of yoga pants that she bought from Victoria Secret. Throwing on a hoodie to stave off the chill in the air she was ready for bed. Unfortunately before she could do anything she heard a noise in the kitchen downstairs. Slipping on a pair of ugly but comfortable UGG slippers she headed downstairs, smiling at the two sleeping girls on the couch. Katie and Amber had fallen asleep watching what appeared to be a horror movie and she quickly moved to turn it off so that the random screams coming from the main menu wouldn't scare anyone.
Taking an afghan from behind the couch she drew it over the two girls, having briefly thought about waking them up but decided against it. She figured if they woke up later they could either stay down there or move...completely up to them. Remembering her original reason for coming downstairs she made her way into the kitchen, stopping short when she noted Giles was already inside. "Oh...hey." She stated awkwardly, having no idea what to say to her mentor.
They hadn't seen each other in days. She truly had no idea if Giles knew about her brief stint with death once again but even before that they had avoided one another. She knew that Giles was aware of Angelus coming back for a brief period of time. She had no inking of an idea if he knew about her sleeping with the mass murderer or not but she prayed that her secret would be kept from him. She was well aware that it would difficult but she didn't want to see the disgust in his eyes when he looked at her. "I didn't know you were down here." She told him, again having no frame of knowledge on what to say. So she bit her lip and kept her mouth shut, wishing for once that there was an emergency to demand her attention simply to get out of the awkward silence.

The package of breakfast tea slipped from his fingers and clattered against the side of a porcelain bowl left out on the counter. The noise made Giles flinch a bit, especially since most of the residents at the Slayer Boarding house had supernatural hearing. He would have to endeavor to be more careful and quiet in his packing. Now that his bedroom was a desolate blank room filled only with stark furniture, empty bookshelves and suitcases, Giles had moved onto the only other room in the boarding house that had any of his possessions—the kitchen. It was quite fortunate, in a way, that he hadn’t brought any of his own weapons. That way he didn’t have to go into the armory and have an awkward confrontation with Angel. Well, awkward probably was putting it lightly. Hostile would probably be a better word. In any case, there were only a few items to gather from here. There was some loose leaf tea that he wanted to keep, a breakfast tea and a peppermint one that he was certain he wouldn’t be able to find in Rome. The rest of the tea he had bought in his stay in Richmond he would leave to Violet. He was fairly certain she could make some use out of it. There were also a few tea cups and two coffee cups that he had brought from Europe. He had originally had three mugs, but his yellow ‘Kiss the Librarian’ mug had shattered and then disappeared when Jenny first appeared on their porch. He grabbed some old newspaper and began to tenderly wrap the fine bone china and before placing them in a bag he would carry on to the plane. He was distressed enough that his tomes would be manhandled during the flight, and he didn’t want the fragile glassware to be dealt with the same way. It was a few seconds before Giles realized that it was quieter than it had been just a moment before, and he wondered if the Potentials in the living room had finally decided to go to bed. But the thought of the others fell from his mind when he heard Buffy’s voice from the entrance of the kitchen. His eyes flicked up as he packed one of the coffee mugs, and a brief empty smile came across the watcher’s face, ”Buffy. Done patrolling for the night, I assume?”The silence was thick after her answer. Giles continued to busy his hands packing the china, the void only bothering him slightly. Occasionally, he would look up for a split second, to see that Buffy was shifting around uncomfortably before concentrating more on his own work. He was expecting her to leave and avoid the situation again, and he would allow it. It was probably best to bring up that he was going back to Rome on his own terms, where he could put it forth in an appropriate manner. But his Slayer spoke again, her nervousness and discomfort obvious. He set down the piece of newspaper he had just picked up and looked up to meet Buffy’s eyes, ”Actually, you have fairly good timing. I’ve been meaning to talk with you but… we’ve both had such turbulent schedules…” Saying that felt better than acknowledging that they had been more or less avoiding each other on purpose. He gave an inaudible sigh before pressing on, ”I’m returning to the Rome Watcher’s Council. My flight is in five days.”+++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 579 NOTES: Things are gonna get crazy D:

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She noted what Giles was doing but didn’t really understand why. It looked as if he was packing up dishware which was odd but she wrote it off as one of his little quirks. Maybe he was switching out dishes or sending some back to Rome so they didn’t get broken? Things that were breakable weren’t at all safe in this house with the girls running around, the fights breaking out, and just the general chaos that one had to deal with when there were so many people in one house. Add to that the different personalities and histories of each person and you got pandemonium.
“Yeah, didn’t really get much other than a few vampires. Though I did run into a Polgara demon a few days ago. It was strange but luckily not that tough to kill.” She told him off handedly, not mentioning the fact that she hadn’t actually done the killing. It had been the night that she had met up with Sam Winchester on accident. To say that she hadn’t been a fan of the younger Winchester brother before that night would be an understatement but luckily they were able to at least somewhat bury the hatchet. “It’s weird here. It almost seems as if now that the demon and vampire community have learned that we are here they are flocking towards it instead of running in the opposite direction.” She told him.
She was surprised when he spoke again, this time telling her that he had something to tell her. However nothing could have prepared her for his next statement, even though if she would have thought about it...it shouldn't have surprised her. “What?” She asked, her eyes searching over him and then again noting what he was doing. She was right, he was packing up his stuff, but it wasn’t to switch it out or to send it back to Rome for safe keeping…it was because he was leaving…again. Why did he always have to leave? Why did he always have to run when things got bad?
“You’re leaving again?” She asked him, her eyes flashing with anger and hurt. “Why? Because you don’t like the way that things are going or because you can’t handle being in the same place with me?” She asked, her tone thick with anger, masking the hurt that she felt. She didn’t want him to leave, didn’t want to lose her watcher once more. This conversation felt so similar to the one that they had when he went back to England after she had been brought back and she had hated it then…so why were they having it again?
She could remember the abandonment she had felt when he had left the last time. The bad decisions she had made once he had left. She could still remember the song playing at the bronze, Michelle Branch had been on stage signing Goodbye to you as she was in a back corner making out with Spike. That had been the start of her bad decisions but definitely not the end of them. So why was he leaving? Did he want things to fall apart again?

His Slayer’s words describing the patrol had become as mundane as a parent asking about how their child’s day at school was, and Giles listened accordingly, his hands still occupied with tea cups and newspaper. Off the top of his head, Polgara demons had a particularly deadly appetite, needing to eat every two to three hours, so it was good to know that it had been defeated. He nodded in agreement when she described the bizarre circumstances in Richmond. Thinking on it for a moment, the watcher finally replied, ”It makes one wonder if there’s more at work here than just the demonic activity.” Of course, what he was really thinking of was some larger threat that was gathering forces. The Power’s sudden spree of resurrections and eagerness to help compared to their past involvement seemed out of character. Either something was awry in the ranks of the Powers, or they were building up the ranks for war. Both situations were unsettling to the watcher. But what was more painful than that was seeing the sudden realization wash over Buffy’s expression. Yes, this was exactly like those few years ago. She didn’t understand why he wanted to leave, and Giles knew that it was the right thing for him to do. The watcher placed the last of the china in the bag and set it onto the counter so that he could place his undivided attention on Buffy, even as she was bitterly replying to his news. He had to admit, her accusations seemed a bit off to him, or at least a touch misguided. Was she thinking that he felt uncomfortable sharing a position of leadership with her? In contrast, Giles wanted his Slayer to be a more active leader than him, since she was certainly more able to guide the other Slayers and Potentials in all situations in battle against evil. Or perhaps she thought he looked down on her for wanting to save Angel. It was difficult for Giles to know what she truly meant by that statement. Regardless, the watcher merely accepted the Slayer’s anger with a slightly sad and reserved demeanor, and answered her evenly and softly, ”The latter is certainly not the case. And if by ‘not liking how things are going’ you mean that I am concerned about the manner in which you dealt with Angelus returning, then, to be honest, I’m afraid that does play a small part.”Giles’ fingers rested on his glasses for a moment before he removed them, folding them and tidily tucking them away. Though he wanted to simply express what he was thinking and present the reasons without feeling that certain twinge of anxiety, Giles’ logical side kept a firm grip on his tongue. He carefully selected what to say, knowing that it probably wouldn’t make Buffy any less upset, ”Additionally, Rome is still our center of operations, and I still have responsibilities concerning the Watcher’s Academy and the Council that I’ve been ignoring for far too long. With Xander here in Richmond, there are almost no senior watchers in Rome right now. It is simply a matter of priorities. Here, I’m… I’m just scribbling down notes.”Now having made his point, Giles should have probably graciously bowed out with some kind words, but since he had brought up the Boarding House massacre, he was somehow struck with curiosity. Diverting from whatever Buffy was saying, the watcher more or less interrupted her, his voice ringing with a certain kind of parental disappointment, ”The potentials that Angelus killed… what happened to them? Th-the aftermath of their death, I mean.”+++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 601 NOTES: Two words... Retail Hell.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She nodded thoughtfully at Giles’ statement about something more going on at work. “With this town and everything that I’ve learned about it so far, wouldn’t surprise me. Between original vampires who sired a specific type of vampire, to demons that are strange, to vampires who come out in the sunlight thanks to those little daylight rings thing…god knows what else could be in this town that no one had ever even considered.” She told him, wanting to keep his attention and at the same time wanting to run and bury her head in the sand. She had never been one to shy away from confrontation but at the same time she hated fighting with those she cared about…even if they were wrong.
She quickly looked down, wanting to stem the angry tears that welled up in her eyes. If she was honest with herself a part of them were hurt but a lot of them were caused by anger. Giles had been like a father to her for years and while she hated that he was making this decision, again, without consulting her, she also felt like she was being abandoned once more. How many times did he have to leave and come back before he realized that he was better off here, with them?
“So yell at me, scream at me, hit me if you really want too…but don’t leave. Don’t deprive the girls here of your knowledge and experience.” She told him, holding up a hand to cut him off. “I may be able to teach them how to swing a sword and to stake a vampire, but I have nowhere near the knowledge that you do about things. Sure their watchers may be able to help them once they are assigned to them, but what happens if something happens to their watcher? The only reason I knew when you were kidnapped several times is because either Willow or Angel showed me where the hell you were. Remember when you were kidnapped by Balthazar with Wesley? Angel showed up and told me where you were. I had no idea you had even been kidnapped! What would happen if that was the case to one of those girls and they didn’t have someone to help them? I wouldn’t know the first thing about how to research for a demon that I had never seen!” She told him, her voice steadily rising yet she wasn’t yelling…yet.
She took a deep breath and spoke again, this time in a tiny voice that seemed to belong to a little girl rather than a woman who had been through as much as she had. “And what about me? What about when I need you to be there? That may sound selfish but Giles you’re the closest thing that I have to a father…I don’t want to watch you leave again.” She whispered.
Stepping back in shock at the disappointment in his eyes as he asked what happened with the potentials, having ignored his logical statement about Rome, she looked away. “I buried them. Just like we did in Sunnydale. Except this time I buried them in the cemetery rather than the backyard. I even ordered headstones that were ‘replacements’ for ones that had been broken from several different companies. They are in Richmond cemetery under headstones that bore their names.” She told him, refusing to look him in the eye. “And I go there once a week to place flowers on them, not that it will ever appease my guilt. However I did take care of it.” She stated, not knowing if he meant their bodies or something else, but that was all she would say for the moment until he clarified.

Crossing his arms for a moment, Giles noted that Buffy was making good points about the dangerous levels of supernatural activity happening around Richmond. It was almost enough to make him question heading back to the council for a moment, but he knew that plenty of other places had problems of their own. With the Rome headquarters being their hub, he placated himself, knowing that the information from Richmond would be passed along, as well as the majority of what he had been missing globally. He knew that this would likely be a difficult argument for the both of them, and he had to keep some degree of confidence. Even with Buffy’s tears starting to fall, Giles steeled himself. Jenny’s words rang in his mind… that this would make her stronger, and that in the future, Buffy would be grateful that her watcher let her make her own mistakes and learn from them. It didn’t seem like that was the case right now, but Giles’ expression was still calm and steady. Although, he had to admit, her words were very inflammatory. To even consider berating her or, worse yet, striking her was out of the question, and Giles knew he had to look appalled at the idea. Perhaps it was Buffy’s way of asking him to resolve his ire over the Angelus incident, but it was so sad that she didn’t understand that his departure was for so many other reasons. He took a quick breath to speak and deliver a counter-argument, but Buffy wouldn’t let him. All he could do was give a small sigh and raise his own hand to rub his forehead, already pounding from stress and such. There was one flaw with her argument, which he presented in a rather dry and pointed manner, ”You did research perfectly well without me when I was in Bath. Xander and Willow a-and even Dawn have excellent demonology skills. And if it was truly a situation that needed my knowledge, it could be gained easily enough through a phone call. I’m not swearing to cut off contact with you.” ”I know. It’s not simple. For either of us, I assure you. And if anyone deserves the blame for this, I will readily claim that. After my mission, I shouldn’t have gotten distracted. If I had returned to Rome immediately, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.” The watcher said, his voice softening a bit, but not losing its determined edge. ”But I’m afraid that… despite your feelings, you must mature beyond them. In the past few months, I’ve watched you regress, and I can’t say if it’s because of my influence, or Angel’s, or a mixture. You’re blinding yourself to the consequences of your actions. Despite knowing the dangers of being close to Angel, you’re continuing a relationship with him and continuing to risk the lives of everyone at the boarding house because of it. It is beyond selfishness. It’s childish.”Realizing that his tone was becoming more and more stern, he made the tension drop from his shoulders before he continued, more disheartened than anything else, ”That being said, I will not force your decisions. As an adult, you have the choice in how you are going to live. However, I ask you not to implicate me in situations I have no wish to be a part of, and I’m afraid that hedging the risk of Angelus is included in that.“He gave a tired, gentle nod to her explanation of what happened to the potential’s bodies, but that wasn’t the complete story he was after. And the trappings of their gravesites might have been touching, but it seemed a bit meaningless to Giles, having had to have exorcised their spirits which attacked the Boarding House in a fit of rage. She paused, and her watcher intuitively knew she was looking for more guidance, ”What did you tell their families?”+++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 651 NOTES: Why are my characters all trying to leave Buffy? - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She hated the look on his face right now. His face was calm, expressionless, and she hated it. She briefly wondered if his precious Jenny would be heading back to Rome with him or if she was going to stay with them and just annoy them. She felt guilty immediately after she thought it but she couldn’t help but wonder if it was because of her that he was thinking of heading home. She felt like a small child for thinking the thoughts that she was but she still felt abandoned. She was so sick of having everyone trying to leave her! Did people not understand that the reason she was still alive was because of them? Not because she wanted to be!?
She bit back a scream of frustration, not really knowing what to say as he talked about the research that they had all learned how to do while he had been gone. She figured counter arguments were the way to go with him and she steeled herself for giving him said arguments. “Dawn won’t be here for much longer. I plan on sending her back to Rome as soon as I can get her to agree. It’s too dangerous for her here because I don’t know where Glory is at the moment.” She told him, knowing that he had no idea the true goings on with Glory because she hadn’t told him. All he knew was that she had been kidnapped and that the group had gotten there while Glory opened the portal. He had no idea that she had died again, nor did he know what the oracles had told her. She hadn’t wanted to burden him with that knowledge right away, but she figured now would be a good time to tell him…or at least before he left.
Hearing him say that she regressed was like a punch in the stomach. “Regressed?” She asked, her voice breaking but feeling like an insolent child she tried to harden herself to his disapproval. “You don’t know the hell I’ve been through Giles! You’re right, maybe I’ve been a bit more emotional than I usually am but that’s because I have someone in my life who doesn’t care if I cry! I don’t have to be strong for him all the time! Would you rather I go cry on Spike’s shoulder? Because before Angel came back and the group was still in Sunnydale that’s who I went too! We all saw how you acted with that, what was it, oh yeah, you tried to have him killed!” She told him, her voice rising. “As for me acting childish and selfish for carrying on a relationship with Angel, don’t you think I deserve to be a little selfish? How much have I given up? How much have I had to lose because of what and who I am?” She asked him, tears no longer falling, instead a hard mask falling over her normally soft features.
“Angelus will not resurface, we are being careful. We are also looking for anyway to bind his soul. Willow is helping and I thought you would as well but clearly I can’t count on that.” She told him before biting her lip. “Who else would I be with Giles? I’m never going to get old, I’m never going to die for that matter. Should I be alone forever? As I watch my friends die, my family, anyone I love? Should I be punished forever because of something that some group of gypsies did over a hundred years ago?” She asked him, before her spine straightened as he asked about the potentials families.
“Two of the girls who were killed were orphans who literally were in the foster care system their entire lives. One of them was on her own because her father had been killed by a demon a few months back and the other two I’ve already spoken with their families. I told them the truth, that they had been killed by a vampire. I gave them the location of their cemeteries and I check on them every other week or so to make sure they are okay. I didn’t sweep those girls under the rug Giles nor will I. I thought you knew me better than that.”

A bit of a sad expression crossed the watcher’s face, a bittersweet mixture of misery and a father’s love. It was surprisingly touching how much Buffy was willing to try to make him stay, but also disappointing that she refused to understand. However, her arguments fell a bit flat with him. If she, or any of the other potentials, had truly needed his assistance, why had the last few months of his life consisted of poor sleep and research and little else? Although not exactly forthcoming to speak with Buffy himself, it almost seemed like he had become a hermit. When Jenny had arrived on their doorstep, he thought that might change, but such a thing wasn’t to be. As he understood it, she was only here to be used as a pawn of The Powers That Be. And he would be lying if he said he didn’t fear losing her again. But he supposed that he should reply to Buffy’s arguments that she would lose one of her key researchers in the near future. Still remarkable placid, Giles was only a bit tight-lipped as he spoke, ”If that’s true, then perhaps someone who knows her habits should be there to receive her there and ensure that she doesn’t try to go on a return flight.” Really, with Xander’s arrival, Giles couldn’t think of anyone who was currently in Rome that truly knew what to expect from Dawn at her most clever. The Englishman gave something of a stilted sigh. Perhaps regress had been too harsh of a word. But he couldn’t put it in any other fashion. Yes, she had been balancing a slightly unnecessary job, training the potentials and doing regular patrols, and he recognized that she deserved something beyond that. But he couldn’t say he agreed with anything his Slayer said. His throat felt dry, but he managed to speak, ”We all waited for you to talk with us, and you never did. You distanced yourself. It was your choice to confide in Spike instead, and, even with a soul, he was a risk too great to let be, just as Angel is right now. Angel is the first person you fell in love with, so, yes. It must be quite emotional for you. But the Buffy I knew would never put her self interests before the lives of others. We all have to face enough danger without internal threats.””Yes, just as I’m sure you were being careful before Angel lost his soul,” Giles fumed a bit, her weak promise not reassuring him in the slightest, ”As I understand it, it only takes Angel feeling true happiness, which could come at any time, and which you are a key figure in. If you truly wanted to honor the memories of those girls, you would completely ensure that Angelus could not return, and that unfortunately means that until Angel’s soul is secure, you should have some distance from him.”And then Buffy continued to speak. For a moment, Giles wondered if he heard her wrong, or had misunderstood somehow, but the words were perfectly clear. ”No,” He blurted out, mostly due to confusion more than anything else. She was continuing to speak, but Giles was lost in his own thoughts, still stuck on her previous words, now suddenly not thinking of the murdered potentials at all. The normally unflappable watcher was now trying to close his mouth, or at least have more words come out of it. He severely doubted this was merely Buffy trying to shock him or fool him. But was she truly never to age or die? Did she completely understand the ramifications of what she was saying? The ways that she would change and what she would lose were too numerous to count. He finally began to awkwardly cobble up some semblance of words, ”Wha- Buffy… i-i-is this because of the spell that unlocked the potential’s powers? How did this… You’re immortal?” Even as he was still trying to wrap his head around the concept, he had a suspicion he would not like the explanation. +++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 682 NOTES: Giles' head just exploded.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She pulled her sweatshirt closer to her, trying to warm herself from the suddenly frigid room. She knew that it wouldn't do much good since the room temperature really hadn't changed but the feelings in the room, however it was an unconscious action that she had carried over from childhood. She had always tried to wrap herself up in a blanket or a coat when she was worried or scared. This was something she had even done quite often when she was fighting large adversaries. Not all of the time but numerous times she had changed clothing. Adam she had on a big sweater, Glory she had changed into a big sweater and the First she had on a jacket. It was something that comforted her in a way that she had never fully understood.
Hearing Giles’ excuse for Dawn she shook her head. “Satsu is there. So is Rona. They’ve already been informed to keep Dawn’s tiny butt over there by any means necessary.” She told the elder man, not giving him one ounce of room to work with on her end. It was true that she had called Satsu and let her know that Dawn was being sent back as soon as she was able to verify that it was safe for her to be traveling by herself. She had also talked to Rona and done the same thing that she had with Satsu by informing her of Dawn’s tricks and to keep her there by any means necessary.
“I distanced myself because I had no one to go to! You left mere days after finding out that I had been in heaven! Xander, Willow, Anya and Tara were the ones who pulled me out without even thinking of what it would do to anyone but themselves! And Dawn couldn’t handle it. Who else was I going to go to?” She asked him. “I would have come to you but you dropped the leaving bomb on me as soon as you found out. The only reason I didn’t come to you to begin with is I didn’t want to admit to you where I had been. I know you were upset with Willow by what she did and I didn’t want to add anymore discord between the two of you.” She told him, her eyes burning with unshed tears though she refused to let them fall. She wouldn’t allow herself to appear weak.
“Angel’s curse is a joke and everyone who would think about it should understand that! A moment of happiness unleashes the demon? How does that help anyone!?” She asked, having always wondered about that but never really having the nerve to ask. Why not? What did it matter now anyway? “As for us being careful, what do you expect? For Angel to live in complete isolation from everyone for the rest of his existence?” She asked him, a glare that defined the term ‘looks can kill’ being shot at him. She understood his dislike for Angelus but to take it out on Angel was ridiculous.
Hearing the softening of his voice she looked up and nodded. "Thanks to the spell that Willow did to unlock the potentials powers I am immortal. As is Faith. We are the ones that were able to give the slayers their powers and without us there would be no more power. So in order to ensure that slayers never truly die the Powers that Be decided to make it to where we never die. And trust me, Faith has made sure to test it. She's psyched about it. I can pretty much guarantee that you know that I'm not." She told him, her eyes showing a bit of the pain that she was refusing to let show.

Rupert restrained himself from arguing back that the physical part of ensuring Dawn’s relocation wasn’t entirely what he had meant. Satsu and Rona, while perfectly capable of physically and mentally overpowering the young Summers girl, would not have the personal relationship with Dawn that would make the transition easier for her. Giles’ memories of her, while some might have been works of fiction, gave him a much stronger connection with her. But it was obvious that treading over the same area would do no good and would only serve to upset Buffy further. Although becoming agitated himself, Giles knew that throwing too many incendiary comments would only get them off track. Then again, both of their ire seemed to be growing, and a truly emotional argument seemed inevitable. There was a bit of silence after Buffy explained exactly how she had seen those days right after her resurrection, ”I’m sorry to say that I had planned to leave before I knew.” The watcher put simply. But it was the truth, at least. He had seen her just not care anymore, and Giles felt that then and now, the only way to guarantee her development as an independent young woman was to let her fail or succeed on her own. ”You became stronger in my absence. Mostly because of the hardships you had to endure.” Not to mention that the Witches’ coven in Bath was now one of their most important allies and was a key part in Willow’s rehabilitation. ”It’s not about helping anyone. The Rroma people weren’t trying to combat a great evil, they were enacting vengeance. Angel’s curse is meant to be torture for him and anyone who dares to become close to him.” The watcher explained, hinting that it would, and already had, hurt her. But his Slayer was still adamant, even hyperbolic in her statements. It made the watcher want to point it out, but he opted for being slightly more genteel and logical, ”My expectation of anyone who presents a danger to society is for them to know their limits and abide by them. The person who should be primarily responsible in keeping Angelus sealed is Angel himself, and yet it seems he is pretending that Angelus is an entirely different person from him.”And yet, suddenly, as the topic shifted, the watcher was not interested in Angelus or curses anymore. He listened with rapt concern, trying to glean every meaning he could get from his Slayer’s words. Mostly, one phrase stood out to him: The Powers that Be. Did those intangible bastards have their thumb in every pie, trying to run the world from the back seat? They were using his Jenny as a tool, and now Buffy as well? Giles’ jaw clenched tightly as it suddenly dawned on him what the Powers must have been doing. They wanted a guaranteed dogs-body or three for fighting their enemies down on Earth, and was using Angel’s and Buffy’s relationship as the bargaining chip, not even considering the fact that all of the Slayer’s mortal friends and family would be buried and she would have to watch them all die. She seemed to know this innately and Giles was now trying to keep his anger towards the powers at a low simmer, ”The Powers didn’t even give you the option?” He asked, a touch of venom still sinking into his tone. ”They just expect you to fight forever?” What a piece of work these Powers were. More and more Giles wanted to find a way to talk to them and give them an earful and a right hook. They had robbed everyone of so many things—Jenny of her well-deserved rest, and now Buffy could never settle down for more than ten years… could never have a child, if she had ever wanted to. It made Giles felt sickened and hurt at the same time. +++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 649 NOTES: Yes, that's very true :3

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Hearing that Giles had planned to leave before he found out about her being evicted from heaven didn’t make the situation any better. If anything it honestly made it worse. Realistically if she would have planned on leaving and would have found out that something terrible happened to someone that she cared about she would have canceled her plans to help them. Then again, maybe Giles didn’t care about her as much as she had thought he had. She loved him like a father but maybe he didn’t feel the same way about her any longer. He had at one time since he had been fired because of it but maybe too much had happened, she just didn’t know.
“I might have become stronger but I also did quite a few things that made me weak. Let’s see, in case you’ve forgotten…I slept with Spike in your absence. Willow went on a magic bender than almost got the whole world killed and the only reason she was stopped was because you came in and did some crazy magic binding thing. Granted I know that Xander was the one who talked her down but we would have fought to the death right there Giles. I don’t know how that fight would have ended had it not been for you.” She told him honestly.
Hearing his words about Angel and Angelus infuriated her but she kept her calm, at least for the moment. “Angel and Angelus are two separate people. They may share a body, but they are two different beings. However with that being said, Angel doesn’t see it like that. He sees Angelus as the evil within himself, the evil part of himself. He agrees with you that it is his responsibility that Angelus is locked up, hence why we are not together right now. I don’t know if we ever will be again but that doesn’t mean that I don’t see him as someone who I love and who is my friend.” She stated. It was true that she and Angel were not a couple at the moment but they weren’t exactly just friends either.
They had never truly been just friends.
Shaking her head she laughed, though this laugh was a cold dark laugh, one that would have sent chills down anyone else’s spine. “No, they didn’t give me a choice.” She told him. “If they had, I would have told them to suck it. And I can guarantee I would have used those exact words.” She stated. The face that she wore clearly stated that she found him asking a very innate question. “Really?” She asked him. “This surprises you why?” She quirked an eyebrow before continuing on, not giving him a chance to reply. “When has my life ever been fair Giles? You ask me why I didn’t keep Angel away from everyone once we got his soul back. This is your reason.” She told him, her eyes boring into his, never giving him the chance to break eye contact with her.
“There are only four people that I know that know at least somewhat what I feel like. Angel, Spike, Kathy, and now Faith. Spike didn’t really leave anyone behind. Kathy has Angel now. Faith is completely thrilled that she gets to live and kickass forever, and those are her words not mine. Angel knows how I feel, because he faced it with me. He fell in love with me knowing that if by some miracle I lived to be an old woman, that he would watch me grow up and die. And let’s face it, how likely was that to happen? He knew falling in love with me that he would lose me sooner than later, and he did. He had to deal with my death. So he knows a little bit of what I’m going through.” She told him, not daring to tell him that she hadn’t told Angel yet.

”And how do you suppose anything would have been different had I stayed?” The watcher had now crossed his arms, mirroring Buffy’s own defensive stance. Silently he was cursing that he hadn’t just dropped everything already and gone to pack the last few of his items. And yet, something was spurring him to argue further, let all of the bitterness that had accumulated in him while he had been shut out and ignored by the entire Boarding House, “Willow disregarded anyone’s criticisms of using her magic long before my departure and I still think that you and Spike… It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” And that was all he was going to say on that subject. As much as Buffy had been appalled by his less than professional relations between him and, say, her mother, Giles was equally uncomfortable discussing Buffy’s sexual history, ”But I doubt my presence would have affected much of anything. In fact, if I hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have been able to interrupt that fight. The Bath Coven was the ones who sensed Willow and lent me their powers. I was merely a vessel.”Even though she had attempted to hide it, Giles noted the irritation that laced her speech as she talked about comparing Angel and Angelus. He could understand her feelings about the topic, but was still not about to change his own views on the matter, ”Separate identities, perhaps, but not a separate being. They share a body and a memory, and both are innately affected by the other’s emotions and actions.” Or at least, that was how the watcher thought of it. Angel certainly wasn’t the giddy sadist his counterpart was, but there had been times, particularly recently, where Giles had seen a lack of responsibility in Angel, ”Angel’s definition is quite possibly correct, but if he actually feels that way, it was not evident at all when I spoke with him. In fact, he seemed quite offended when I suggested that he take measures preventing it from happening again.” However, Rupert couldn’t and wouldn’t even attempt to argue with the fact that Buffy cared for Angel still. ”No, I suppose it hasn’t been fair.” He admitted, once Buffy was done with her explanation. Thinking in one of the brief pauses, he knew he needed to bring the conversation back to the primary argument. He wasn’t so sure why they had strayed so far, probably because of his needless questions and the shocking revelation that Buffy had brought to light. But, strangely enough, knowing that Buffy was immortal just made the watcher want to leave that much sooner. How could he cope with the supernatural making the young woman he thought of as his daughter a little less human all the time? If The Powers decided to make her immortal today, would they start modifying her more tomorrow? If tampering with when she died was easy enough for them, couldn’t they be heartless enough to alter her personality, making her an unquestioning hunter of the Power’s enemies? ”As you said, it sounds as if your problems are more readily dealt with by Angel rather than me. Regardless of the reason for my departure, my flight is still in five days, and I still have to return to the Watcher’s Council.“He picked up the bag full of china and looked towards the entrance to the kitchen, wondering if Buffy would allow him to pass. Giles slowly walked towards her, stopping just a couple of feet away. All of a sudden, his body felt like lead, because he understood what he had to say—the fundamental reason underlying why he had to leave, ”Buffy,” He said softly, her name just barely leaving his lips, ”I cannot… perform my duties as your watcher anymore.” His voice was ragged, the words, heavy with emotion, seemed to fracture and stick in his throat. Regardless of the horrible crushing pain he felt in his chest, Giles still managed to keep a level eye with Buffy, ”The key to any successful Slayer and watcher relationship… is to trust one another. Which we now seem incapable of. We hide things from one another. We… question each other’s motives.” There was a pause as Giles tried to compile how to put what he was going to say next, ”It doesn’t mean that I care for you any less. It simply means that we have made mistakes, which will take time… and distance to forget.”+++ TAGS: Buffy WORD COUNT: 746 NOTES: Definitely cried while writing this.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She glared at him when he tried to say that her problems were solved by Angel and not him. “What could you do Giles?” She asked him, her voice cracking. “How could you have stopped it? You couldn’t have. But neither could he. I never once thought that you would basically order me to choose. Haven’t I been through enough? Haven’t I given up enough?” She asked him, her eyes desperately seeking some sort of answers though she knew all too well that he had none. “I don’t need him in my life, but I want him in my life. However you, I need you in my life. You’ve been one of my only constants for years, and yet this is the third time that you’ve walked away from me.” She whispered.
Turning away she tried to hide the tears that were trying with a fierce amount of desperation to fall. She didn’t want to let him see her cry. She didn’t want to give anyone the satisfaction. She felt a wall coming up within her, one that was almost too familiar for comfort. She had felt this same way when she had been brought back, when she had been pulled out from heaven. For some reason lyrics to a familiar song sprung up in her mind, reminding her of exactly how she felt at one point, and how she was starting to feel again. Just hoping no one knows, that I've been going through the motions. Walking through the part. Nothing seems to penetrate my heart.
Those words called out to her, reminding her how easy it was to not feel, to pretend like she didn’t care. Well, more importantly to pretend like everything didn’t kill her inside, that breathing the heavy air on earth wasn’t excruciating. She could easily become that person again, but she didn’t know if she wanted to. The only thing that rung out to her was how easy it was, how easy not feeling was. No more hurt, no more love, no more pain. Why did she want to continue to feel? Why did she fight so hard to come to terms with everything when all it did was cause her grief?
Hearing his final words she looked at him, her eyes losing their final shine, in turn turning blank, dead, almost as if she was her own corpse once more. "If that's what you feel is best. I won't stop you. Good luck Mr. Giles." She stated, accentuating the Mr. She took one last look at him, giving him the chance to see the one tear that she let fall before she turned around, determination in her steps as she walked out the door.
No one would ever know the agony in which she felt, because she wouldn't let them. She would close off again, it was the only way she'd stay sane.
After all, it wasn't like she was getting any older.
