- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -The wind blew her hair around as the windows were down, the radio blaring in the background. She wasn’t sure why she had decided to drive, but she was glad she did. It was actually hot in Virginia for once, which was a bit surprising. She had walked outside for a moment, shook her heads and gotten into the car. It was ironic for a native Californian to want to ride instead of walking in the heat but eh, what could ya do.
She looked down at her outfit, feeling almost naked at how revealing it was. It was strange to her to feel that way since before she had really gotten into the whole slaying thing she had been one to dress as little as possible. She wouldn’t say she dressed like Faith or Cordelia had, but at the same time she didn’t mind showing a little skin. Now however, she thought of it differently. She had a purse with her, which felt foreign though she had to bring it. With the short blue jean skirt on, a long sleeve gray fitted shirt, and flip flops, there was nowhere to hide a stake…hence the purse.
She rolled her eyes at her thoughts. God she felt so old all of a sudden, which was ridiculous since she was still in her mid twenties. Hell she had just arrived at her mid twenties. However she felt old looking around at those who were her age walking up and down the sidewalks of Mystic Falls. There were girls wearing shorter skirts than she was (which was actually quite hard to do since the skirt she had donned for the day was fairly short), tank tops and bras…that was it. And the shoes they were wearing were ridiculous. She was wearing a pair of comfortable flittery flip flops and some of these girls had on 6 inch heels. Yeah, granted, she’d be the one laughing later when she was in high heeled boots patrolling and they were at home icing their feet because they were idiots who wore heels for a walk, but that was beside the point.
She pulled her attention away from the people walking and pulled into the Wicca shop she had visited once before. Giles was a friend of the owner so the owner was able to trust her with the bigger stuff, which was good since Willow might need some of it in the future. She put the car in park, turned it off, grabbed her purse and got out of the car.
She walked in and immediately went to the jewelry, knowing that was the part that interested her the most. Her eyes widened as she saw a ring in the case…a ring that looked familiar but different at the same time. “Julie?” She asked, calling out for the owner. When Julie appeared she smiled at her. “Can I see that ring?” She asked, pointing to the silver claddagh with the diamond center. She had debated buying a new one for years but with Angel back in town she thought it either would be a good thing to do, show him that she still belonged to him even though they weren’t still together…or it would blow up in her face. Either way she wanted to look.
What harm could it do? Yeah, famous last words, she knew.

The way some girls dressed...Bethany feared for them: truly. When people said that, normally they did not have that spike of fear flash through them so suddenly they jolt. Bethany did. The way girls dressed these days it was surprising more of them weren't attacked. There was nothing wrong with dressing nicely and sometimes that involved flashing a bit of flesh. There was nothing wrong with dressing in shorts and a t-shirt, in theory, because it was hot out and skin needed to breathe. No girl should be attacked for the way she dressed. None of them were ever 'asking for it', as some of their attackers claimed. Dressing provocatively was somehow the Norm around here, and lots of other place. Why anyone would want to run around half naked Bethany would never know. She stayed firmly dressed at all times. In fact, the most skin she flashed was her arms. that was enough thank you. She had no desire to feel or be naked again. And she was never having sex again thank you very much. Life was so much easier without it.
Richmond was not her natural home but she was making a life here. She knew no one but the man training her, and the other intern who was there with her. Besides those two Bethany had no family or friends to speak of. Well, there was those Wiccans she still e-mailed but they did not live here. She might go and visit them at some point. Support from a distance was better than nothing but there was no support like the one that came with face to face contact. Without them she would never have become involved in witchcraft. It saved her sanity, Bethany thought. It gave her a friend when there was no one else to be friends with. It gave her something to do. It kept her busy.
There was a wiccan shop in Richmond which was nice. It was convenient not to have to go out of town to get what she wanted. However Bethany had never been before. She had no idea if it was any good or not. It would so be her luck if it sucked. Honestly, her life was on tumble of bad over worse. It was a cycle she had hoped she had broken after meeting Angel. It was too soon to hope, she thought. At least, the ginger girl wasn't allowing herself to dare just yet. These things had a way of coming back to bite you when you least excepted it.
Bethany entered the shop with a smile. Inside she was nervous. She didn't like, necessarily, meeting new people which was probably why she didn't know anyone from here yet. Being abused and then having a friendship torn before her eyes (well it never existed, had it?) was a bit of a shock for her. She just wanted to live her life in peace and happiness. Maybe she was finally getting what she wanted.
Bethany noticed a blonde girl ask to see an Irish ring. Interesting they should be selling it here. She thought for a moment, a snicket of information snagging a coil of a memory. "I read a thesis on the use of them in bonding rituals," She said, taking the plunge. Didn't people engage in conversation during shopping? Besides, she wanted to learn more about magic and they were in a magic shop. "Seems a bit obsessive though," She added. It did. "Sometimes jewellery should just be left as jewellery," She smiled.
Bethany might be interested in the energies but she knew some things she had to do on her own. Love shouldn't be manipulated in any way. Want, desire and lust should never be bottled because that would just get out of hand amazingly quickly. People should take things slow, and not too fast and they shouldn't worry too much about whether or not someone likes them. It's not always a good thing, to be liked, that is. Sometimes it was a very bad thing indeed.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She waited as Julie came over and opened the display case. The woman was one of the sweetest that she had ever met…it was nice to know someone who knew Giles. She was handed the small ring and looked at it for a moment before noting how flashy it was compared to the one Angel had given her all those years ago. Her heart clenched as she saw the one staring in front of her, not sure if she wanted to get the one next to it that looked like an almost exact replica of the one that Angel had purchased long ago.
She bit her lip, trying to decide. She heard Julie’s soft voice asking her if she was alright and she took a deep breath before answering in the positive that she was alright. Do you know the legend of the claddagh ring my dear? Julie asked her in a worrisome tone. The blonde slayer nodded her head before putting the one with the diamond back and picking up the plane silver one that had a grove in the heart but that was the only difference. “My ex boyfriend bought me one for my birthday several years back. It got lost in the move from Sunnydale if you catch my drift.” She simply stated, knowing that the woman knew that Sunnydale had gotten blown up. It wasn’t the truth of course being that the ring had gotten lost after she came back to Sunnydale after running away. This of course was caused because of her stabbing Angel in the chest.
However any of that was too complicated and much too personal to share with the sweet woman so it was just easier to state that she had lost the ring when Sunnydale had been blown up.
“I was trying to replace it for awhile but it hasn’t felt right. However I miss it so I figured I would buy another one. However I’m looking for something almost specific I figure. I want something that is different from the one he gave me but not as flashy as the diamond one.”
As Julie walked away she heard another voice from behind her. The blonde slayer turned around and saw another girl who looked around her age. “Bonding rituals?” She asked before shaking her head. “Yeah, my best friend would know more about that than I would. I just want to replace it as I received it from someone and I lost mine.” She stated before shrugging. “However I do agree, sometimes jewelry should just stay jewelry.” She said with a smile. “I’m Buffy by the way, Buffy Summers.” She introduced herself, knowing it was only polite.

No one in Richmond knew Bethany, not as a friend at any rate. Which was fine, she guessed since her friends had the tendency to stab her in the back, metaphorically speaking of course. Bethany was in no great hurry to make friends. She liked being on her own. Being alone meant there was no one to stab in the back, use and abuse her like the few who had before. It might seem like overkill to not want to know anyone due to a few instances in her past but Bethany was not a girl made of strong, stern stuff. She was easily broken, though had learned to toughen up a bit, and as such, held a strong disliking for her heart being battered. Over the years it had recovered quite nicely from the shock Lilah Morgan had given it but she still wasn't too sure who was a friend and who was a foe.
Certainly, no one in Richmond could be classed as out to get her. Or so Bethany allowed herself to hope. She had lived in a mild state of paranoia for the past four years and some habits were a little difficult to break. Once you got into that mindset it was very difficult to remove it from yourself. She was sure it would do her no harm in the long run. It just meant she took a bit to thaw from a few degrees below room temperature. She was more suspicious of those who approached her, because it always sparked suspicion that they must know her somehow, until it became clear they did not. It was Lilah Morgan who had approached her, and Angel too, no matter how good his intentions had been.
Magic, however, was just so enticing. She felt compelled to talk about it because she wanted Wiccan friends here in Richmond. She had been warned of the dangers of playing with such things and didn't want to fall down a dark pit. So Bethany had constructed a kind of schedule of sorts, finding comfort in routine and the rigidness of it. She had to do certain things at certain times and while she wasn't compelled to do it that way (she had swapped things around several times, ran over or fell short of time slots) she knew she had these things to do before she went to bed. She was human after all and her brain would wander and think about other things. She was glad she did not possess an addictive personality like her mother. And if she did, Bethany was determined to ensure it stayed controlled and regimented. Addictions always spiralled out of control.
"Yeah. Something about twin eternal souls or something," Bethany replied. "It could either be really creepy or possessively romantic," Bethany shrugged. People were weird. She knew that better than anyone. They had their quirks, their flaws and their dangerous habits. Bethany had been the focus of a dangerous habit of a long time and she wasn't about to entertain anyone who had any. Ironically, witchcraft was a dangerous habit but she wasn't harming anyone so she was considering it a grey area. She would take it slowly and see how things go. "Oh, that's a shame," Bethany said. "I always hate it when I lose things," She added before realising Buffy had introduced herself. "Bethany. Bethany Chaulk," she said with a smile. "I'm sorry, I hope I'm not intruding. I don't know anyone in Richmond and I've been here a while," She smiled sheepishly, and a bit awkwardly.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Buffy nodded absently, thinking of her lost ring, the one that she wished she could find. Unfortunately there was no way as even if it had survived the mansion for all those years, Sunnydale had been blown to a crisp…well…to more accurately a huge crater in the ground…so there was no way she could ever attempt to retrieve the ring. She heard what Bethany said about souls and nodded again, this time nodding to the ring in the case that she was looking at.
“I’m sure it’s in several books. However it was exchanged back in the 1700’s in Ireland as a sign of devotion. It’s called a claddagh ring. The hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty and the heart represents love… If you wear it with the heart pointing towards you it means you belong to someone.” She stated, her voice taking on an almost deeper tone as she remembered the exact words that Angel had spoken to her all those years ago when he explained what the claddagh ring meant.
She snapped out of it suddenly before giving both Bethany and Julie a large smile, trying to cover up for her weirdness before. “Some people gave it as a sign of marriage…it was actually used as an old time wedding ring. When the person wore the heart pointing away from them, it meant that they were engaged to be married, and once they were married the groom was change it so the heart was pointing towards the bride, so that people would know that she was taken.” She stated, remembering her shock when she had found out that in Ireland in the 1700’s Angel and her would have been married. She remembered reading it in a book in college and literally having to sit at home the rest of the night, not knowing if she was going to cry or if she was going to drive to Los Angeles and kick Angel in the teeth for not telling her the true meaning of the claddagh ring.
She shook her head again, trying to keep her thoughts from going down the dangerous road they were headed. Thinking of Angel only led to heart ache…and she really didn’t have time for that today.
“You’re right though, it could be either extremely creepy…or extremely romantic. Be it the romantic in me that I thought died a while ago, but I’ll go with romantic.” She stated with a laugh. “No, you’re definitely not intruding. Not at all. I’ve only been in Richmond for about two months and moved here with my best friend. This is definitely more her type of store than mine, I’m just here picking up a few things for her.” She stated with a smile.

Bethany didn't really own any jewellery and certainly not any a guy had given her. There was an emotional attachment on anything a boy bought you. No one had bought her clothes even. She didn't want anyone to buy her that kind of thing anyway. It symbolised way too much and Bethany wanted, needed nor was ready for any of it. She had had enough romantic like relations to last her a life time. She didn't care if she died not having had a boyfriend for fifty years or more. Life didn't revolve around whether or not you were in a relationship, though some people did think that it did.
Bethany hadn't known much about the ring. She didn't pay much attention to jewellery in general, whether it was related to magic or not. She was more interested in books. Letters on the page, ink and leather covers, or paper covers, hard covers, thick volumes or thin ones. She liked music played with Bose speakers because they provided the best sound and coffee with a good book. She was a quiet girl, and a simple one. She didn't like all those fancy things that other girls liked. "I'm pretty sure you can use it in a protection spell too, against love spells and stuff,"
"Does she come here often?" Bethany asked, intruiged. It would be nice to meet another witch. It wasn't a necessity but it would be nice.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She couldn't help but think of her long lost lover when she spoke about the claddagh ring. Her mind immediately went to the day she received it. The conversation scarily similar to the one she was having now, though just the words were the same. She could still remember her fear of losing Angel as he went to take the Judge's arm overseas to some far off land. She could still hear the water crashing against the ship, could still smell the salt in the air and taste the salt from her tears on her lips. She knew it was goodbye, but at the time she didn’t want to accept it. Little did she know the goodbye she would get was far worse than the one she was expecting.
Her mind glossed over the memories of the months that her lover tortured her and those closest to her. She could now think of them without breaking down but the memories to this day still bothered her because in some way she felt as if it was her fault that Angel lost his soul. Sure neither one of them knew the consequences to their love, but she had pushed him into taking her that night…and while she regretted the consequences that it brought about, there was a very large part of her that didn’t regret it…hence her guilt.
The memories flowed over her to the last time she laid eyes on her ring that she missed so badly. She wanted to replace it because she missed the cool metal feeling on her finger and the knowledge that she belonged to Angel, but at the same time the gesture hadn’t felt right because the ring wouldn’t actually be from Angel. She remembered the feeling of it against her lips as she kissed the ring before placing it down on the hard concrete of the mansion floors before telling her loved one goodbye and walking away. After he had come back she had desperately scoured the mansion one night when he was asleep but hadn’t been able to find it. To this day she wondered if he ever noticed or wondered that she didn’t wear the ring anymore and if he would have been upset with her for losing it as it had been one of the only four gifts he had ever given her. She had all the other ones, but the one that meant the most was long gone.
She pulled her thoughts away from her lost love and turned her attention back to the woman in front of her. “Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve seen a lot over the years so protection with something as simple as a ring wouldn’t shock me in the least.” She stated, thinking of the Gem of Amara that she had sent angel to protect him from the sun. It had come to no surprise to her that he had destroyed it, but she had always felt like it should be his choice. “She actually does come here quite often. Julie, the owner of the shop, is a friend of an old teacher of ours so we’re all fairly close.” She stated with a smile.

Bethany's first sexual encounters were not ones she wanted to think about. She wanted them to vanish from her head but that was never going to happen . She couldn't magic them away, not without compromising her other memories she wanted to keep. There was so much she wished has never happened but she also knew she probably wouldn't be where she was now if they had not. She might even be working with children who went through the same or similar circumstances. She wanted to help them, sincerely. No one should have to live through that kind of assault even once.
Bethany's other relationships consisted of friends. Her one romantic relationshp had frittered into nothing. She hadn't intended it too, but neither had she been particularly bothered about whether she maintained it or not. She hadn't wanted intimacy, she had wanted company. She hadn't wanted anything more than a cuddle really. And that probably didn't fit in with a guys wants. Which was fine. She didn't need to be in a relationship to be fulfilled or happy. She was perfectly content on her own. And who knows, she might stay that way for the rest of her life. It wasn't necessarily to be in a relationship. Besides, she couldn't have children, which was part of the end goal of a relationship. So what was the point, really, besides staving off loneliness?
Bethany had no relationship she wanted to remember. She had had friends, though they were scant at best. no one was ever really there for her. She had learned to live and survive on her own. She was very independent, not entirely through choice but necessity. As a result Bethany had learned she didn't reallly want any one else barging in on her life. The decisions she made...she liked that she didn't have to talk through and have to make allowances for. She wasn't an unreasonable girl, but she did like having her freedom.
Bethany nodded. "It seems sometimes that love can warp even the purest of things," she said, though her view of love and similar things was pretty warped itself. She had never seen the good side of such things, since she had never experienced it herself. "Between work and, well, work, I don't get out often," she added softly.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Buffy sighed when she saw Julie carrying a large stack of books down the stairs from what she had guessed was where they the shipments were kept. The blonde slayer quickly ran behind the counter and took the books from the older woman. “You shouldn’t be carrying these by yourself!” She scolded gently with a smile. She wasn’t sure why but Julie reminded her of her grandmother in a way, though she wasn’t quite that old. She knew that the shopkeeper was around Giles’ age though she had a feeling she might have been a couple years older. Giles however looked sturdier so she felt like she ought to help.
Buffy quickly put the books on the desks and went back to the right side of the counter, waiting for the shopkeeper to ring her out. She had no idea what any of these books were but she knew that Willow needed them so eh, it worked out well. She turned her attention back to Bethany and smiled a bit. “Sorry, I’m a bit distracted today.” She stated with a laugh. “I’ve got a hundred and five things to do and not enough time to do them.” She told her, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder.
She turned back to Julie and handed her her credit card, smiling a she took the bag from her. She then pulled out two business cards. “Whenever you get shipment in, call me.” She told the elder woman, handing her one of them. “Myself or one of my friends will come and help you put them away.” She said with a smile before turning back to Bethany and handing her the other one. “My best friend and I live together. If you ever want to talk to another likeminded individual or two give me a call and I’ll put you through to her. She’s a lot better with all this witch stuff than I am.” She stated before waving at the two women and exiting the shop.
Now only a hundred and four things left on her list to do.
