- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Elena Isobel Gilbert sighed slightly as she walked into the Mystic Grill. This place honestly had been one of her saving graces over the past few weeks. It gave her a place where she could get away from everything, including school, her friends, her boyfriend, her brother and her aunt. She loved all of them (well, all of them except school), but she definitely needed time away from all of them.
She had originally taken space up in the campus library. It was one of the only quiet places there was on campus, as it was required. The librarian, Mrs. Finch, was a stickler for quiet, and no one wanted to mess with her. The woman was probably 80 years old and had been known to smack people with rulers and throw books, Elena had seen it all coming from her at one point or another.
Elena tended to try and get her homework done several days in advance that way she didn't have to worry about it. Which seemed to be a good thing since most nights she tended to be dealing with the supernatural, something that she never thought she would ever actually think, let alone say out loud. Unfortunately she'd been having weird dreams recently which had kept her mind occupied. So here she was, in the library, working on homework that was due in her last class that day. This wasn't good at all. Luckily it was Psychology homework and as it was her eventual major when she went away to college, it all worked out well. She just hoped she could concentrate on it instead of concentrating on her dreams.
Elena shook her head slightly and looked down at her book in front of her. She opened up the pages and immediately tried to read what was written…easier said than done. It was like she was cursed today. Apparently some idiot thought it would be funny to run around the library, so now there was a freshman running around with 80 year old Mrs. Finch running after him with a ruler. It was too funny not to laugh at, but it didn’t help her problem of studying.
Unfortunately after that whole debacle the library had been a favorite for a lot of other students as they wanted to see the old woman throwing things...so the Mystic Grill had become her knew study place.
Hopefully it would stay that way.

Things had been going... okay, lately, it seemed. Nothing too terrible had happened - and the past few days, she had even managed to avoid visions, not only during classes but in general. That was always, well, awesome. Duh. Not having to deal with head-splitting pain and passing out completely on occasions was definitely something that she could appreciate. Not to mention that the images she saw, well, they weren't things that she was going to miss. They were disturbing on just so many levels and if she didn't have to see them for a while, she wasn't going to complain the slightest bit on it. They could stay on vacation or whatever as long as they wanted. She definitely felt like she deserved a break from what she seemed to see so frequently, after all. Watching all of the pain and even feeling it sometimes was no easy thing. She was just a teenager.
Running a hand through her wavy, black and blonde hair, Sarah mentally pressed down those thoughts. She knew her next vision could literally hit her any second - so she would try to avoid thoughts of it for the sake of like, not jinxing it and just generally trying to keep it way out of her. If she didn't have to deal with that kind of stuff - well, her life would have been totally stress free. There were like, school and stuff, but that was something that had never been among the highest of her concerns. She was no nerd and wasn't one of those naturally smart people, but hey, she wasn't failing. That was something to be proud of. Sort of. She was lacking in things to be proud of, she had to find it in the small things.
Sarah suppressed a small sigh as she adjusted the strap off the messenger bag she had over her shoulder, not really interested entirely in doing homework or whatever else normal stuff she was supposed to be doing. She was close to legal adulthood, at least. That had to count for something - she could be somewhat on her own, definitely. The grill was at least one place to get away from her annoying little brother and too concerned mother, and it was popular enough that she didn't have to be alone. Upon entering, her hazel eyes flickered around the building, looking upon the familiar faces. She remembered how superficial she had been... and well, how much simpler things had been then. But she couldn't decide if she would have gone back to being like that. One of her old acquaintances was there, though, and she honestly didn't feel like being alone. Walking over, she let a wry grin cross over her tanned face. "Elena?"

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - Contemporary style writing is when...
She groaned, reading the same passage for the 10th time it seemed. She was exhausted, hungry, and simply done with the day. She wished she was still at the library but unfortunately it was louder there then it was there. It was starting to get louder here in the Mystic Grill as it was after hours (which meant that everyone was out of school and getting off work) so everyone from the town was coming here for dinner. She really did tend to get a bit annoyed that she had to do her homework at the Grill, but what could she truly do about it.
She sighed as she took off her jacket, annoyed at how hot it was in the Grill. Granted with jeans, boots, a blue sparkled tank top, and a black jacket she did have quite a bit on so it was understandable that it was hot, but still. She caught sight of herself in the glass that was on the table and smiled at the blue earrings that were placed in her ears. They had been a birthday gift from her parents the year before they died. She rarely wore them, always afraid that something would happen to them. However when she woke up today she just felt like she needed them close to her and for some reason the earrings seemed to be the way to do that. It was weird to even think that wearing earrings could bring her parents close to her, but with everything that she had been through recently she guessed she could afford to be a bit weird with her thinking.
She looked at the glass again, this time her necklace caught her attention. There had been so many times in the recent few weeks that she thought about removing it. Not for the reason one might think however. Her thoughts had been bouncing around recently to the point that she could barely sleep at night. She could still remember the conversation with Stefan the year before hand when she had asked Damon to compel Jeremy into forgetting that Vicky had been a vampire and Stefan had killed her. She had told Stefan that she wished she could forget too but she couldn't let herself because she couldn't allow herself to forget the way she felt about him.
These days she wasn't so sure if she didn't want to forget. And not just Stefan, but all of it. She had thought many times about finding someone to compel her to forget about everything and everyone here. To make Jeremy and her both forget and to send them away to a faraway place where they wouldn't have to deal with this stuff anymore. It was almost too perfect of a plan, and one that she hadn't fully decided against yet. She wasn't sure how long she could take the things that were happening to her and if things didn't get better she might just put that plan into action.
Her musings were broken by a voice calling her name. She looked up and saw Sarah Bennison, a student who used to go to Mystic Falls and one that she really didn't know that well, but had known her well enough at the time. "Sarah?" she asked before smiling a small smile. The two hadn't really ever been friends, though they had run in the same crowd. "Wow, what are you doing back here?" She asked, hoping she sounded sincere.

It was weird seeing Elena here - even if she had technically been the one with the unexpected return, really. Sarah hadn't believed that she was going to return ever really, and she knew it wasn't a ridiculously long time before she could leave it once again. But... well, at the same time, she had expected it somewhat. The death of her father was something that she had literally seen coming, of course, but it just hadn't been something that she was expecting to come true. Having it come true had definitely been terrifying - that'd really been one of those outstanding moments that she realized what she saw in those painful moments were very much what was happening in real life. It had definitely not been an easy subject to wrap her head around - and well, it still wasn't really. Some of the things she saw... well, she couldn't believe they they were human. How they behaved certainly weren't.
But even so - the things that she saw were crazy enough on her own. There were definitely some that were way worse than others, but each thing she saw was incredibly disturbing and violent on its own level. They weren't exactly things that she wanted to see, but she realized that she wasn't having a choice in it. Sarah saw them, and she knew they would end up unravelling eventually. How soon was a bit hard to predict depending on the vision, but she'd noticed they usually happened within a week or so. It was creepy, but it wasn't something that she could really stop from seeing or stop from happening. Well, she hadn't exactly tried - but if she saw it and they always seemed to be coming true, it didn't seem like there would be that much of a point too it. That and, well, not to be selfish, she valued her life more than people she'd never met.
But... she needed to focus on something that didn't involve violent visions of things that had yet to come. Distractions were always well appreciated, after all. And well, talking to someone that she used to know seemed like it wouldn't be that bad of an idea. Sure, she had changed (as if her hair and nose and ear piercings weren't proof enough) but that didn't mean she couldn't, well, be sociable and polite. The smile that she put on her face was at least somewhat convincing as far as that area of things went. "Moved back with my mom," Sarah offered a nonchalant shrug of her shoulders, a brief pause between her words before she gave a brief explanation. "Dad died a few weeks ago, and I'm still not eighteen." She added a bit of a roll of her eyes at the end up of words, very easily able to talk about her father's death without having to put any real emotion into it. She'd gotten good at putting people at an arm's length if anything.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -She was surprised when Sarah stated that she had moved back with her mother because her father had died and she wasn’t eighteen yet. Elena immediately felt sympathy for the girl that she hadn’t really known well but they had run in the same circle. “I’m sorry about your dad.” She told her, her tone and her eyes showing the truth of her words. If anyone knew about losing people, it was Elena. Over the past year and a half she had lost her adopted mother, her adopted father, her biological mother (who was worthless but it was still a loss), her biological father/adopted uncle (who she hadn’t really known until the end), and her favorite aunt who had been there through it all then to die horribly. Elena knew about loss…it crippled her sometimes.
To add to her loss, she had also lost her lover, her best friend, Stefan. Granted, Stefan was still around but he wasn’t hers anymore. He had changed because of Klaus and it almost felt as if he had died…she mourned him as if he had while still trying to bring him back. She knew one of these days her thoughts would most likely turn her crazy but for the moment there was nothing she could do about it.
Elena was surprised at how blasé Sarah sounded about her father’s death. She knew that a lot of people hid behind denial when it came to death, but her tone of voice made it seem like she didn’t care. She didn’t know Sarah well, she would be the first to admit that, but she knew her well enough to know (or at least she thought she did) that Sarah didn’t have a huge issue with her father so why she would pretend like it didn’t matter she wasn’t sure…unless like stated before, she was just in denial.
“I know what it’s like…to lose someone you love. It’s hard and it’s painful. If you ever need to talk, I’m here. Jer and I lost our parents last year so I definitely feel your pain.” She told her, hoping she wasn’t over stepping her boundaries but at the same time wanting her to know that there were those around her that could be there for her.

Honestly, Sarah did find it a bit strange herself that she was able to distance herself from so many things. She still felt them... but it was just a lot easier to cover it up from others. Building up a fort and then just... crying in the shower, that kind of stuff worked for her. It was totally stolen from almost every movie with the queen putting up a bitch act and then when she was alone crying like a baby, but sometimes that just seemed to work out better than anything else. It wasn't like she really had anyone to turn to, not anymore. Friends and people you could actually trust where two separate categories, especially with the kind of friends that she had associated herself with way back when. People changed. She was probably supposed to be some fake tanned, fake blonde with new Jimmy Choos or whatever else based on what she had left as. That had definitely been quite wrong - as she was sure the white-blonde streaks she had were a bit different than what some would have guessed.
The offer, if it was even really that at all, was something that surprised her, more than likely evident by the raise of her eyebrows. Elena had never been a girl that she knew particularly well, but from the seas that they had been a part, it was easy to assume that she was probably a bit vain or self-centered herself. Sarah knew she had been most definitely. And even though some of that did change a bit as they grew over, the fact that they didn't even really know each other added to the shock a bit. Her hands idly rubbed up against each other, a small silence falling between them. Talking about it was just something that she never really considered. Bottling it up probably wasn't the best idea, really, either, but no one had seen what had happened and would really be able to understand the toll that it had placed on her. They may have never been particularly close, but it was still a loss.
"Uhh, thanks," She finally said, running a hand through her hair and ruffling it slightly. "It's fine though. His death was kind of expected." Of course, for anyone who knew how he had died... her saying that probably made her sound like a psychopath or the beast that had done it, really. The death hadn't been pretty, but it was definitely clear that it was an animal as far as medical examiners were aware. He had always enjoyed deer hunting... so that didn't seem too awfully strange, at least. It hadn't actually been an animal, but you know, Sarah had no idea what it had been, even seeing it. It definitely had no been human, so an animal seemed like the logical default. She was willing to at least try and accept the idea of it.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Elena was a bit lost as to what to say to this girl. She knew that dead parent bonding wasn’t the best for making new friends…and she was well aware of that fact. She had learned that the hard way after Jenna had insisted that she and Jeremy go see a counselor after their parents died. She had enrolled them in a support group for teens who had lost their parents. She always had the suspicion that in that support group was the place that Jeremy found the people who started him on drugs. All the kids had lost their parents to things like drug overdoses…not car accidents.
Needless to say it was two sessions before Jenna saw exactly what they were being put through every week and she let them stop going, thankfully as Elena had already been preparing ways to get out of it…but either way she knew the types of friendships that these tragic things bore and she wasn’t interested in having any of those anytime soon. She hated to say that and she knew it sounded a bit harsh but if she couldn’t think of something to say to someone in a normal setting, how would she be friends with that person?
She heard Sarah speak about the fact that her father’s death was something that was seen coming and she tilter her head a bit to the side, knowing she probably looked like a confused puppy dog. She assumed this meant that her father had some sort of illness but she wasn’t sure. Usually people who lost someone to cancer or something along those lines simply said that their parents died of cancer or whatever it was that killed them…but Sarah hadn’t and that struck her as odd. “Oh, uh…how did they see it coming? Did he have cancer?” She asked, knowing that she sounded extremely nosy but for the life of her couldn’t stop the warning bells going off in her head that something else was going on here that she wasn’t even considering.
Maybe it was just her way of trying to deal with something other than her own life, but she had to know what was going on.

This was a bit of a weird conversation, Sarah couldn't deny it. She hadn't really talked to anyone about her dad's death - not to any extent, really. Her mother of course had been concerned and she'd even talked to her brother a few times about it, but she'd been a bit more concerned for him on because it'd been clear they had been a lot closer and much better with the whole bonding ideal. She had never really been good at that - always a bit too girly and stuck up for the rest of her family with her cheerleader and popular girl ways. It was probably wrong that she would have loved to just live that kind of life over everything that she had now with the mind frying visions and having to come back down to earth practically with everything else, but she really preferred it. She wanted the easy way out.
The suggestion that Elena made was a reasonable one, of course, based off of what Sarah had said. Perhaps what she had said hadn't been the brightest idea - but thinking ahead wasn't exactly her strongest point, particularly when it came to her mouth. "Uh, no," She shook her head, holding back a slight chuckle. It certainly had not been predictable by any normal means - but she very well doubted that seeing it in your head was supposed to be a normal thing. She very well rather not end up locked up in some mental institution with a bunch of crazy people, though. "He was a hunter, went out hunting a lot. It was an animal attack. I guess not that predictable... but I just wasn't surprised." Considering that she'd seen it, surprised wasn't the right word. More shocked that anything like that would have ever come true.
And speaking of the devil, she could feel another one of those visions coming on. Instinctively, her hand rose up and pinched on the bridge of her nose, pushing away at the tension building as her thumb and middle finger rubbed over the top of her eyelid, as if trying to brush it away. It of course, did nothing, but she could feel the pain building up in the back of her mind and her body tensing in preparation. Her hand settled after a moment onto the side of her face, her thumb on her temple and rubbing circles slightly. Visions were never easy things to endure, and being in public definitely made it worse, with all of the people around. How badly she would react to it was certainly hard to determine, but that didn't stop her other hand from unzipping one of the outside pockets of her bag, fully prepared to grab the aspirin bottle in there.

- - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - -Elena looked down at the menu in front of her as she waited for Sarah to respond. She knew this menu backwards and forwards but it was better than staring uncomfortably at the girl who she barely knew. The menu was fairly standard for a place like this. Appetizers such as mozzarella sticks, entrees such as burgers and deserts such as brownie sundaes. All in all it was a fairly typical menu and one that she had tried most everything on said menu. It was pathetic how much she had eaten here over the years, especially when her father had been out of town. Her mother couldn’t cook and neither could she, so anytime her dad had gone out, they had immediately come to the Grill for lunch and dinner.
Even now, though her parents were gone, she still came here on a ridiculously steady level. She couldn’t cook and Jeremy hated to cook so they usually came to the grill to eat. Also it tended to be where she could easily meet up with her friends as usually at least one of them was around somewhere. She assumed Matt was working today but she hadn’t seen him, though to be fair she hadn’t looked for him either.
They were still good friends but after he had broken up with Caroline because she was a vampire, their friendship had been a bit stilted. She knew that he didn’t agree with her choice to stay beside a vampire (especially since Stefan was off the rails and being an ass to her most of the time) and she had a feeling he felt a bit betrayed since it was actually Stefan who had staked Vicky. They hadn’t discussed it yet but she had a feeling that they would and it wouldn’t be a pleasant conversation.
She heard Sarah’s voice finally and her mind immediately stopped when she stated that it was an animal attack. “An…animal attack?” She asked, not wanting to come off as strange but knowing that the statement ‘animal attack’ usually was a cover up for vampire. She prayed that it hadn’t been anywhere near Mystic Falls, as there were only a few who could be responsible for said animal attacks…
And one of them was the man she was in love with.

The questioning of how her father died wasn't exactly something that she had expected. Animal attacks weren't the most uncommon thing in the world in the area, apparently, judging how she'd read a few articles about a few happening here in Mystic Falls as well. Maybe that should have scared her off or made her uncomfortable, but she hadn't put that much thought into it, in all honesty. Mystic Falls had it's fair share of woods and everything around it. "Uh, yeah, an animal attack. It's kind of weird, I guess, considering some have been happening here too." Of course, Sarah was completely ignorant to the fact that it was vampires causing all of the trouble here. She may have been a prophet unknown to herself, but she had no idea about everything else that happened to be out there. She had a lot to learn, to say the least.
How to deal with the frequent visions was another thing that she needed to learn how to handle. Getting them in public really wasn't something that she could afford considering, well, she generally disliked being thought of as insane. Avoiding them and public areas wasn't the hardest thing in the world - but being in a small town, it was going to be a lot more difficult. Sarah knew that in just a few more months she'd be able to get the hell away from there and people she knew. The big city was at least easy to blend in, even when there was a piercing feeling in your head that was probably one of the most painful things that she would ever experience in her life. This was one thing that she was certainly going to have to readjust to, and it was certainly something that she did not want to.
The pain was starting to make things in front of her, things that were real, a bit on the blurry end of the spectrum. It was coming on quickly and painfully. "I'm really sorry Elena - but I need to go. I guess I'll see you later." There were hints of desperation in her voice and she didn't bother to wait for a reply before she rushed out of the Grill. The outside was generally rather empty and she had no problem finding her back to a wall of the building, her eyes squeezed shut tightly and thumbs massaging foreheads to her temples. Everything around her was gone and she hardly noticed herself double over in the process. The lights in her vision were bright, nearly blinding - a city of large proportion, more than likely. The screams were shrill and she could see the knife, the blood bright against the pale skin. It was awful.
