as much as i'd love for this to be an announcement full of excitement. it's anything but that. over the last couple of weeks we've received a number of reports about sites that have been spammed, attacked, cyber bullied, and harassed by a group of individuals. these people are ones that will go to any length, for any amount of time to make your days on a site a living hell. they aim to get reactions, they aim to make people quit, and they aim to shut down sites.
as a roleplaying resource site, we feel it's our duty to forewarn you all that these situations are taking place. so far most attacks have only occurred on Proboards sites, and one Invisionfree. But let anyone on any forum host be warned. This isn't a joke, and this is really happening. Two sites that I know of have already closed their doors due to death threats. while this is mostly online and more than likely by a group of teenagers, the threats probably aren't serious. however, the words still inflict the fear, and still do the damage. along with reports of hackings into facebook accounts, MSN accounts, and even the sites themselves. please be sure that your passwords are secure, long, and not guessable. this will help prevent your site from falling victim to hackers. they also will take to the cboxes, especially IC cboxes pretending to be ted bundy, or some other characters.
what should you do if your site does get spammed? DO NOT ARGUE, DO NOT CHALLENGE THESE PEOPLE. it's what they want. if you give them a bone, they'll fetch it, and come back. instead, delete their posts, record their IP's and ban them. make sure you're banning them from cboxes, and the forums. these people are using proxies, so yes. they may come back, and you may encounter them more than once. but warn your members, warn your staff members. and stay strong.
if you have encountered these individuals, then please feel free to PM me with the details as i'm trying to keep a detailed log of these attacks.
this thread won't be open for discussion, and we don't want there to be anything threads amongst the boards discussing this either. if you know names, IP's, and emails, share them quietly, and not publicly, as this only gives them more attention. if you have any direct concerns, please PM me (or one of the other staff members) right away.
