She knew what he was thinking…she always seemed to know what he was thinking just as he always seemed to know what she was thinking. They would never forget about what had happened…they shouldn’t have to. They needed to remember because eventually what they had gone through would make them stronger than they were. They had a past…and it wasn’t all roses and hugs…it was violent…it was hurtful…and yet at the same time it was passionate. She clearly could remember a time when she and Stefan had first met and she had spoken about passion to him…and yet this situation was completely different.
Matt's that friend since childhood that you start dating because you owe it to yourselves to see if you can be more.
And?
And then my parents died, and everything changes. Anyway, Matt and I, together we just, I don't know, it wasn't, um. . .it wasn't. . .
Passionate?
No. No, it wasn't passionate. . .
She knew then, somehow, that she and Stefan would be passionate. They already were. This was months before she knew that Stefan had been the one to save her from the car accident that killed her parents and while she had never awoken during that time, somehow she knew. There was a familiarity about him that told her that she had known him somehow. She couldn’t explain it, even to this day since she knew she hadn’t been awake when he saved her…yet something told her to trust him. Even after she had found out what he was…she tried to deny it but she couldn’t.
I gave you today just like you asked. And I understand that you would never do anything to hurt me, and I promise I will keep your secret, but... I can't be with you, Stefan. I'm sorry. I- I just can't...
She remembered uttering those words and then going into her house, shutting the door and falling against it as she fell to the floor and sobbed. She remembered feeling as if her heart had been ripped out of her chest when she told him that she couldn’t be with him. It wasn’t that she hadn’t wanted to be with him, it was everything was piled up at once on top of her and she felt like she had to choose and no matter what, no matter what she felt, her family would always come first.
Now was different, Stefan was her family. Between him and Jeremy, they were the only two people that she truly considered family anymore. She loved her friends but they had all drifted apart because of everything that they had been through. They were in relationships that not all of them understood. She knew that Jeremy and Bonnie were closer than ever, Lexi was doing god knows what and Caroline seemed to be pulling further and further away. Then there was Tyler and Matt, neither of whom she had seen in quite awhile. Jeremy and Stefan were the reason that she kept going every day no matter how hard things got…they were her family.
She smiled up at him, her eyes while still glassy were void of tears, something that she couldn’t have said even a few days ago. “Agreed, no more keeping each other in the dark. Even if we don’t like what the other person is going to say and even if we know it’s going to hurt…we still need to be honest with each other. It’s the only way we’re going to be able to get past this whole situation and the only way that we are going to be able to make it in the future.”
A lot of girls would be offended by the fact that Stefan hadn't said 'I love you too' right away, instead he had agreed with her and told her that he knew. However it didn't matter to her. She didn't tell him that she loved him because she wanted to hear it back...she told him because that's how she felt. She loved him more than she loved anyone else with the exception of her brother. Stefan meant everything to her and no matter what happened, that would never change.
Hearing the song come on the radio and seeing the playfulness in Stefan's eyes, she grinned. "Well of course Mr. Salvatore." She told him with a coy smile before standing up and allowing him to wrap his arms around her. "Show me some moves that you and Lexi did at the Bon Jovi concert...oh yes, I've heard all about it." She told him with a giggle, glad that the atmosphere was more playful now. She had missed this. Most people didn't see the playful side of Stefan, but she had. And she loved him all the more for it.
