- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Another day at the Grill another chance to make sure the electric didn’t get shut off at his house. It wasn’t like his mom was going to show up with a large check to make all the bill collectors go away. Inwardly he sighed, on one hand he was glad that he didn’t have to deal with half the stuff his friends did but he always felt left out of the loop. His lack of knowledge usually meant he was ill prepared when things went down.
When people said your teen years were hard he didn’t think they meant this. No one expected you to know how to use a stake on a vampire or be able to shoot a werewolf. He never thought that when his dad used to take him out hunting that it would end up being a survival trait for living in Mystic Falls. On one hand he resented not being a part of the social elite but after he saw how Tyler’s dad smacked him around and how Elena’s Uncle John had treated her he was almost glad his biggest problem was an alcoholic mom with a promiscuity issue.
Sighing he began busing the table of the football team that had just left. At least his buddies paid well even if they gave him grief over being a busboy at the Grill. He shrugged it off as he usually did and after dropping the dishes off in the back went to refill a patron’s coffee. He smiled good naturedly as she commented on how nice the town was and took a moment to speak with her before another table began to fill and he excused himself.
Such was the life of a server at the Mystic Grill. The regulars knew him well enough to ask him how things were going and the newcomers would return he hoped. The Grill had its ups and downs but it was all about getting through the lows that kept a business going.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b] April parked her truck outside the Grill and she sighed to herself. Again why was she going back to the bar? There wasn't squat to do in a small town. She grabbed her jacket and slipped it on and smiled as she grabbed her purse and phone and put her headphones in her ears and then walked into the Grill. She looked around and saw the handsome Matt Donovan. Wait....when did she think he was handsome?
She smiled as memories of the times he and Elena baby-sitted her when she was younger. How she missed her friends so much. She had transferred to Mystic Falls High School a few weeks ago and had made a couple of friends throughtout the town. She walked over towards a table and tapped the waiter on the shoulder.
"What can I get you?" he asked as he looked at April.
"I would like an ice coffee please," she said smiling at the waiter who nodded his head and got her coffee for her and handed it to her and she thanked him with a polite smile.
April looked across the room and saw Matt sitting at a table and she walked over towards him. "Hello, stranger," she said smiling as her blue eyes looked up into his brown eyes. "Bet you don't remember me," she said as she sat down across from him and grinned. "So....Matt how you been doing?" she asked as she put her phone in her pocket and smiled sweetly at Matt widely.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Counting his tips for the day Matt sighed. At least he'd have enough gas to put in his car for the week. He'd have to hope that he made enough for the phone bill in the next few weeks. Mom had sent a check but things were still tighter than he'd like. He debated signing up for food stamps when April showed up.
"Hey there, April. Of course I know who you are. I've seen you around school." he said with that slow smile that reached his whole face. He gestured to the seat across from him "I'm just trying to make ends meet as usual with Mom gone and all." he said with a shrug as he pocketed the cash. "Coming here to study or were you just sick of the same four walls?" he asked her as he beckoned her to sit across from him.
April was one of the people that didn't have supernatural powers and was just like him and it made him relax around her, "So enjoying being part of Team Normal?" he joked with her as he sat there for lack of anything better to do. It was kind of nice to only have to worry about normal things for once, like who to take to the dance, and what day his math test was due on. He had way too much homework as always but he'd try to catch up on it later. His life didn't give him a lot of free time given his football practice and the supernatural drama.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b] "I know how that goes with making ends meet," April replied as she sat down across from Matt and smiled when the waiter brought her drink to her and thanked her as she sipped on her drink. The ice coffee was very good. "Things have been a little tight since my mother passed away."
April chuckled as she looked up at Matt."Maybe I decided it was time for me to come out of my shell and make some new friends," she said as she looked at Matt with her big blue eyes and smiled at him. " 'Normal' is a bit overated," she said. "Actually I'm glad that I ran into here because I wanted to ask you something." She paused for a moment. "You know the town has the Miss Mystic Falls Pagenant? Well I seem to lack a 'date' and I was wondering if you would like to be my date?" She asked as she looked up at Matt.
Where the HELL did that come from? Did she just take Rebekah's advice and ask Matt out? She blushed slightly as she picked up her coffee and sipped on it and smiled shyly behind her glass. "Maybe I should have waited to spring that up on you," she said as she accidently knocked over her ice coffee and thankfully it missed Matt by inches and she gasped. "Oh God I am so sorry I hope it didn't get on you," she said as she grabbed a few paper towels and started to clean up the mess she had made. Real smooth she had made a complete idiot of herself and now all she wanted to do was go hide in the corner of the room and cry her eyes out for hours if he rejected her offer and she bit the inside of her cheek.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Yeah, I'm sure we'll get through it." he said sympathetically with a nod to her as they sat together. He did keep an eye out in case someone needed him. He would catch it if someone had to wait because he was chatting at work.
When April spoke it seemed like she had found a new confidence, or at least the impression of one. He beamed at her, "Well that's great. New friends are always good. Gives you a chance to see new things." he added as he waited to see where she was going with this.
Then she was asking him on a date and blushing but before he had time to say anything one way or the other she was batting her drink like a hocky puck. "Here let me get that." he said as he went to grab the spill pail and helped her pick up the mess. Bringing a mop over and washing up the spill after she got her share picked up. He didn't want things to get sticky and gross. There was enough stuff that got tracked in here on a daily basis.
"Its all good, April I'm fine." he assured her with one of his sparkling grins, trying to help her relax some. "Do you want me to get you another drink first?" he asked realizing she might need a beat to calm herself, "Its no trouble..." he offered.
"And I'd be honored to escort you to the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant." he said with a warm grin and nod, "Its nice to be asked." he said as he put the mop back in the yellow industrial cleaning station. He paused to set up a Caution Wet sign next to the area making sure that folks knew it was there and didn't step in it.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b] April smiled softly at Matt when he offered to get her another coffee. "Sure that would be great and maybe you can put a spill proof lid on it?" she added with a grin. "Again I am very sorry for the mess, but I'm glad you want to take me to the Founder's dance," she said smiling at Matt. "The dance is in four weeks and dance practice is after school, but since you work we can always practice at my house if you want to that is."
Whoa since when did April get giddy around Matt? The guy use to baby sit her for crying out loud and she use to hope that he and Elena would be together and now here she was asking Matt out. Well technically it wasn't an 'official' date since she did need a dance partner for the Mystic Falls pagenant. Nevertheless Matt agreed and that's all that mattered to her. "Thanks I appreciate this," she said as she sipped on her coffee. "That coffee is so good." She pulled out a piece of ice from her glass and put it in her mouth and licked it. "What time do you get off work?" she asked as she looked at Matt and twirled a strand of her hair with her finger. Why was she being all giddy around him? She always enjoyed being around him and there was something about him that just made her fall for him. Rebekah was right all she had to do was be brave and ask Matt out and that's what she had done.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -He blinked at her as he listened to her offer, "I'll have to see, April. I don't want to promise something and not deliver. For now let me get that coffee. That much I can do." He went over and got her another drink, putting it in a travel cup this time and sealing it shut. April wanted him to hang out with her but she was under age so he was a bit hesitant to be alone with her. He had to think of a way to make this work. "Why don't we make it a group thing? The dances kind of require it so you can get the timing right." that worked out better. She may not care about her reputation and legalities but he did.
Oh yeah she was definitely flirting. It was hard to miss. "I get off in an hour." he said as he looked at his watch and grinned, "You sure you wanna wait that long?" he teased her, "I mean I can keep pouring coffee but if you want something to eat I can get ya something." he suggested to her. He couldn't help if she was bored but at least he'd make sure she'd eaten if she was going to wait around. "I know Ty does his homework here. You could work on that till then if you're bored." He suggested as a way to get her to stick around. Not that she needed coaxing.
He wanted her to hang out but he didn't want her grades slipping. He'd had enough bad things happening and it made him protective of her. It probably made him a dork but at least he was being honest. He offered what he thought might work and let her choose her path. Win win. Honesty was very important to him so he tried to maintain that with his friends. He gave the table another swipe and waited for her opinion glancing about to make sure he wasn't ignoring anyone.

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b] April nodded her head at Matt as she listened to him speak and she smiled at him. She understood in a way, but she didn’t want to make things awkward. She was only a year or two younger than he was and he had always been a gentleman. She took the coffee from him. “Thanks,” she said as she sipped on her coffee. “I was thinking about asking Elena to be my date for the dance, but she didn’t thank me too kindly for asking her out,” she said with a giggle. “I’m sure she can help arrange a group and sure food sounds good to me.” She paused for a moment to think about what she wanted to eat. “I’ll have a hamburger and fries only make the burger with cheese only,” she added as she watched him disappear into the kitchen to go make her food and she couldn’t help but smile. What the hell was going on here with her? When did she become a puddle of goo for Matt? She reached into her backpack and pulled out her writing assignment and started to work on it until Matt brought her food to her and she put it away and started to eat her food. “This is good and no you don’t have to pay for it,” she said as she handed him the money for the food and watched him. There was just something about Matt that she liked and she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Matt chuckled and shook his head and laughed softly as she teased him, "A group thing sounds like a good way for everyone to hang out. Besides I don't want to make you look bad." he said with a flush as he listened to her order and jotted it down, "Got it. I'll be right back." he said with a nod as he moved over to the kitchen. Passing the order to the window and tackling a few orders in the meantime.
Moving about the restaurant he made it back to pick up April's order and presented it to here, "Here you go." he said warmly as he made sure she liked it, "Fair enough." he said as he looked around. "I've got to take care of other costumers but I'll check back on you, Ok?" he asked her with a nod as he kept his eyes about the place. "Can't lose track of the other customers."

----------------------- [/b] -----------------------[/b] April listened as Matt spoke and she smiled softly. It seemed like she was just making things worse between the two of them and she didn’t want to mess up the friendship she had with Matt. “Matt Donovan, you could never make me look bad,” she replied with a chuckle. “Actually I’m about to head out to the mall and do some shopping so I’ll be back later,” April said as she finished eating her food and then grabbed her wallet and was about to pay for her food when she changed her mind and put her money on the table and headed to the bathroom to fix her make-up. Ten minutes later, she finished fixing her make-up and knew it would be close time for Matt to be getting off work so she decided to walk home. She waved good-bye to Matt and decided to go try and put in a job application down at the book store down the street since they were hiring. She filled out the paperwork and she was about to head out of the shop when she ran right smack into Matt…again. “You know we have to quit running into each other like this,” she teased playfully. She thought for a moment and then she decided to forget about it, she knew there was no way in hell Matt would want to go to the mall with her not after her asking him out kind of. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and smiled softly. “I guess I should be heading back home,” she said as she started to walk down the street.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -He nodded quietly, "I'll catch you later then." he nodded as he got back to the task at hand of bussing tables. It didn't take long once you got used to it and in short order he was off shift and changing for home. He had to go grab a book for an assignment for class so it didn't surprise him when April barreled into him.
"Whoa, hey there." he laughed good naturedly. He tried not to take it personal. This town was tiny and it was easy to run into folks when you were running errands. He usually ended up running into people at the grocery store but you just never knew with this town who would be around.
Taking a step back he laughed at her joke, "Did you need me to drop you off any where?" he offered, "The truck is right there." he said as he pointed to his beat up blue monster. "I'm off work so I have some time to kill if you have errands to run." he offered a bit sheepishly as he looked at her, feeling bad about earlier and wanting to make it up to her. He ran his hand over the back of his hair and exhaled.
He hoped she would see it as the apology it was. He really didn't want things to be awkward between them if he could help it. April was nice and she deserved to have something good happen after all the bad things that had happened to her. She just needed a break and she'd be good.
