That Gabriel would willingly lay himself out in front of someone, let alone one of his younger siblings was astonishing to Castiel. He could count on one hand the amount of times that he'd had a civil conversation with the elder angel. Not wanting to take to long to ask a question, lest the volitile archangel change his mind, but for this time at least, it was easy. He knew exactly what he wanted to ask,
“What is it about this child that makes you want to protect her when you've protected no other ward in your life?” There was no accusation in his voice, merely curiosity. He wanted to know if his reasonings for sticking so closely to the Winchesters was similar to any other angel's. But it had been so long since he'd met another angel who had voluntarily taken a charge that he hadn't gotten the chance. Raphael didn't count. Not only was there no chance that Cas would have a heart to heart with that particular archangel, but he didn't choose his charge. The prophet known as Chuck was the vessel for God himself and his own personal prophet, of course Raphael was going to watch him.
“I will lay it out for her and whatever she decides, that is when I will make my decision, my brother.” Cas paused for a second, it seemed that lately the angels were slowly becoming the type of family that they had been once upon a time. Close ties that had frayed over the eons were slowly starting to weave back together. “Whatever happens, Gabriel, I wish you luck. I don't wish to know you've left the Earth again. If you continue to die, I shall have to get angry with you.”

The Trickster looked at his brother. He still believed this to be very strange, the fact that his brother was actually allowing him to talk to him for longer than he thought. Gabriel never really go along with any of his siblings except Lucifer. With the war that is going on Gabriel hadn’t taken a side. Raphael tried to get him on his, but Gabriel always found a way around it.
He looked at Castiel when he asked the question about Maddie. He really didn’t know how to answer that. “why do you protect Dean and Sam?” Gabriel asked his brother with a light shrug. He let out a sigh and thought about it for a minute. It wasn’t because that he just happened to be in the area when she was attacked by a demon, a demon who happened to be her own father, but maybe he just found that whole thing very interesting. He really didn’t know.
“she is just interesting. Her and her little situation.” Gabriel said with a small shrug. The youngest archangel still didn’t really know how to say it. “I’m sure you know about it right? The father going to hell and coming back as a demon, trying to kill her?” Gabriel paused once more. “its hard to explain.” Gabriel then said, not fully admitting that he cares for the girl because he actually does. He knew Castiel would figure that out anyway so it didn’t need to be said.
The Trickster nodded to Castiel about what he was going to do. He was turning away from Castiel until his younger brother spoke again. He looked back at him and Castiel said that he would get angry with him if he were to die again. The Trickster let out a small chuckle and shook his head. He wondered if he was going to die again. He expected it.
“yeah, and what would you do with that anger?” he asked, teasing his brother.

As usual a question answered with a question, Cas wasn't sure what he had been expecting, a straight answer out of he so named 'The Trickster'? In truth he had begun his detail protecting the brothers, well Dean in particular, because those had been his orders from Heaven, protect the Vessel for the Battle for the World. The fact that he had become invested, personally invested, had not only been unforeseen, but had cause the angel to be dragged back up into Heaven to be punished. They'd used words like 'retraining' and a 'reminder of his orders and oaths', but in the end he was punished for his alliances, his devotions to these mortal creatures, one of whom could and should have been used to bring about the rise of Hell itself onto the mortal plain. He'd chosen his side, in the end, the side of Free Will.
The truth, he cared. Her position had intrigued him and he grew to care, apparently that was often the way that these things happened. One grew to care whether the intention had been there at first or not. The deep sigh that heralded the confession was enough to tell him so.
“I know very little of her situation, but I've heard some of what has happened.”
The elder archangel seemed to find his half-threat of anger amusing, but Cas didn't. There were very large problems when an angel died, the least of all were those problems of heartbreak of their brothers and sisters that they left behind. Bright blue eyes looked straight up at Gabriel as the lights from the fountains cast them into shadow, there was the barest hints of shadow that appeared behind him, not in a show of dominance but one of seriousness,
“I have discovered, my brother, that Pride is not the only one of the Sins that I have learned that I have a problem with. I'll be seeing you,” There was a hint of a smile on his lips when the younger angel took flight, disappearing from view and leaving his brother standing alone in the middle of Rome as he took off.
